Chandigarh, November 1
With cricket fever running high, and flights running late, the Indian and Australian cricket teams arrived in the city this afternoon for the fourth ODI of ongoing seven-match series. The teams, who arrived via chartered flights, had to cancel their scheduled practice sessions due to a delay of over two hours and went straight to the Taj Hotel.

Earlier, the airport authorities took the arriving teams through the VIP gates, to ensure players a clear passage, amid water-tight security. While most of the players arrived together, the Delhi trio of Gautam Gambhir, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma were reportedly coming by road but their arrival time could not be confirmed through the PCA officials, or security personnel. Dinesh Kaarthick, who is also joining the squad was to arrive via a seperate Go Air flight.

Ticket sales go through the roof

The ticket sales for the fourth ODI at the PCA have given the local authorities and the BCCI a reason to cheer. It is interesting to note that the previous few Tests at the stadium had generated very low crowd response. Therefore the ODI, which according to PCA sources was sold out within the opening days itself, will bring smiles back on the officials’ faces.

Ramanjit Singh Sidhu
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 1
The basic policing will take a backseat in the coming days as almost the entire force will remain busy for the India-Australia Cricket match tomorrow at the PCA, Mohali, and in the security of the Prime Minister during his visit to the city on November 3.

Sources in the police said senior officials were busy making arrangements for the two events and holding meetings to assign duties. A senior police official said both events were major and the police would remain on its toes till November 3.

“Though not clear at this stage, the President is also expected to visit to the city on November 8, if finalised, the police will remain engaged in VVIP (Z-plus) security duty during the entire week”, he added.

The Prime Minister will attend a convocation at the PGI and pay a visit to Punjab University on November 3. The senior officials of the Chandigarh Police, including the SP (Traffic and Security) H.S. Doon, held a liaison meeting with the special protection group (SPG) to chalk out plans for the security arrangements and the VVIP routes.

The force from police stations and other units will be pressed into service and there will be a thin strength in the police stations for normal policing, said a police official posted in the security visit.

Doon told TNS that directions had been issued to all police stations to conduct checking at hotels, guesthouses and inns in their area to keep a record of the persons visiting the city. For the cricket teams, special duties had been assigned and a “three-tier cordon” security cover had been planned for the cricket teams at Hotel Taj, where the players would stay.

It was the responsibility of the Chandigarh Police to escort the teams to the PCA stadium and on their return to the hotel. Doon, however, added that the traffic police would ensure that minimal inconvenience was caused to commuters using the VVIP routes as they would only block traffic maximum on two junctions on the route to pass the VVIP cavalcade.
