Khoya seizure: Patiala cops take U-turn
Tribune News Service

Patiala, October 11
The police administration has taken a U-turn on the issue of taking action against 43 sweet shop owners who were allegedly involved in buying spurious khoya and milk products from the cold stores here. While earlier the police had categorically said there was involvement of a large number of sweet shop owners of Patiala in the “unhealthy” practice of purchasing “spurious” khoya and other foodstuff, now the cops say that they do not have any list of the erring 43 sweet shop owners.

Notably, in a major crackdown on the cold stores in Patiala district on September 23, the police department, in coordination with the officials of the health department, had seized 180 quintals of khoya, 30 drums of sweets and about 15,000 litres of sauce from different cold stores.

At that time, the then SSP Arpit Shukla had said the police had prepared a list of the erring shopkeepers, who were supposed to buy adulterated items from the cold stores. The SSP had also said around 43 sweet shop owners figure in the list and they would initiate strict action against them.

However, three weeks later, the cops have taken a U-turn. Speaking to The Tribune, SSP Ranbir Singh Khattra said, “I have recently assumed the charge of the SSP and to best of my knowledge we do not have any list of shopkeepers who are allegedly involved in purchase of spurious foodstuff.”

When contacted, civil surgeon Sham Lal Mahajan said, “Ever since raids were conducted on cold stores, our department had never made any statement about having any list mentioning the names of the shopkeepers (vendors) involved in the matter.”

Meanwhile, the dairy development department is learnt to have submitted the report of the samples taken from the cold stores, which were raided on September 23. However, authorities have yet not disclosed the result of the report.

When contacted, SSP Khattra expressed his ignorance over the report and said, “If the report has been submitted, I will look into it and will be able to comment only after studying the report.”

Kalka: Political future at stake for three
Arun Sharma
Tribune News Service

Kalka, October 11
The political future of three prominent candidates is at stake in these assembly elections. While Satvinder Singh Rana, Congress candidate and sitting MLA from Rajaund, has to win the seat to continue in politics (his old constituency was abolished during delimitation), the INLD would think twice to field its
candidate Pardeep Chaudhary if he disappoints the party for the fourth time to make it to the state
Assembly.

Bhagat Singh (65), an Independent, who decided to take on the legacy of his father Lachhman Singh, a former minister from the area, who died three years ago, also cannot afford to take any chances.

Pardeep Chaudhary is trying his luck for the fourth time and has already lost three elections to the former deputy Chief Mnister, Chander Mohan, who remained the MLA since 1993.

It would be a hard task for him to claim the party ticket again under such circumstances.

Bhagat Singh, who stepped into politics at the age of 65, jumped into the fray and enjoys popularity among residents of Kalka and the neighbouring areas.

The next Assembly elections in the state would be held in 2014 when he would be completing 70 years.

As of now, with dissidence among Congress leaders and support from the local population following his victory in the court as the chairman of the Kalka Bachao Sagharsh Samiti, would make it easy for him to take the lead over his rivals.
