One arrested
: The police on Tuesday arrested a person who was involved in motorcycle thefts. Dhira Singh of Abdal was arrested when he was selling stolen motorcycle no PB-02-AR 6974 at the Kathu Nangal area. A case has been registered against him. In another case, the Ramdass police arrested four persons for making forged registration documents of vehicles. The police said two motorcycles and an amount of Rs 90,000 were seized from their possession.

Fake passport: The immigration wing of Rajasansi Airport here on Tuesday detected a fake passport allegedly being possessed by Parwinder Singh of Hoshiarpur. A case under Sections 419/4209/467/468/471 (12 IP Act) has been registered against him.

Bathinda
Bank branch inaugurated
: State Bank of Patiala on Tuesday opened its 859th branch at village Ghudda, 20 kms from here, on the Bathinda-Badal road. It was inaugurated by KD Vashisht, assistant general manager, region-I, zonal office, Bathinda. Vashisht spoke about the aims and objectives of opening the branch in the region and said the bank was looking forward to the upcoming Central University, Punjab, to provide services to its staff and students. NK Batra, assistant general manager, region-III, Bathinda and Hamir Singh, branch manager, Ghudda, thanked the panchayat and the public for support.

Farewell function: PSEB Engineers’ Association, GNDTP region, Bathinda, organised a function on Tuesday to bid farewell to SK Seth, additional superintending engineer, on his retirement after 35 years of service. A memento was also presented to him on the occasion.

Kartik celebrations: Shree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, Bathinda, will organise celebrations to mark the month of Kartik from September 30 to October 30. It will be marked by prabhat pheris and enacting of scenes from the life of Lord Krishna.

Fancy dress contest: A fancy dress contest was organised at the local Brahmakumaris ashram for children in the 1-7 year age-group. The chief guests on the occasion were Dr RK Madan and his wife Dr Usha Madan. Nearly 50 kids took part in the contest. Sister Kailash exhorted all to instill right values in their children.

Voluntary blood donation: The National Voluntary Blood Donation day is being observed on October 1 at the Civil Hospital, Bathinda, under the leadership of civil surgeon Neelam Bajaj. The civil surgeon has appealed to all voluntary organisations to take part in the event.

Learning with fun: St. Xavier’s School organised a three-day ‘learning with fun’ programme for the students with an aim to provide them with a break from daily routine. The Art of Living session was conducted by Neetu Arora and Nidhi Gupta. The highlights of the three-day event were yoga session, sports activities, magic shows, music and fun.

Protest march held
: Observing the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh as an “anti-imperialism day”, members of the Naujawan Bharat Sabha (NBS) took out a protest march here on Monday. They staged a demonstration and raised slogans against imperialism and asked foreign companies to quit India. District organising secretary of the NBS Bhupinder Singh Longowal said big retail outlets of multi-national companies were affecting small retailers in cities and towns.

Artificial limbs distributed: The local unit of the Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVK) on Tuesday distributed 12 artificial lower limbs, 13 calipers, three crutches and two sticks among the needy disabled persons at a function-cum-camp organised on the premises of Mandir Mata Sri Naina Devi here. President of the local unit of the BVP Bipan Mittal said these had been provided free of cost to them by Lala Durga Charan Charitable Artificial Limbs Centre, Ambala.

Nipun declared best shooter
: Nipun Nagpal of St John’s High School was declared best men shooter during the 34th Chandigarh State Shooting Championship which concluded at Patiala Ki Rao Shooting Range, Sector 25, on Sunday. Amrinder Sangha was adjudged as best women shooter.

Karate trial: Trial for the 23rd National Karate Championship being organised by the All-India Karate-Do-Federation will be held on October 2 at Banyan Tree School, Sector 48.

U-14 Khan Chand cricket meet from Oct 2
: Hansraj Cricket Academy, Panchkula, will be organising the Under-14 Khan Chand Khurana Memorial Cricket Tournament for the Twenty-20 Reebok Cup on a league-cum-knockout basis at Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, from October 2 here. Two arrested for black-marketeering
: Two persons, including a government ration dealer, were arrested on charges of black-marketeering of rice on Tuesday and 40 bags weighing 2,000 kg were seized from them. The ration depot dealer Tarsem Raj of Phalian Mandal had struck a deal with Uttam Chand of Swankha Morh, who was to sell the rice in the black market, said the police. A case has been registered.

Poppy straw seized: Jhajjar Kotli police on Tuesday arrested a truck driver at the Domel Naka on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and recovered 6.5 kg of poppy straw from his possession. He was identified as Ashwani Kumar of Patti Hoshiarpur. The truck was on its way to Jammu from Srinagar.

Trade fair inaugurated: Minister for Relief and Revenue Raman Bhalla inaugurated a Nice Trade fair at Bahu Plaza on Tuesday. The fair organised was organised by leading businessman Arun Sharma. He inspected various stalls displayed by businessmen from Delhi, Punjab, Sharanpur, Jammu, Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Harayana. He asked them to sell quality goods to build confidence among consumers.

Army holds medical camp: A Rashtriya Rifles unit under the aegis of Romeo Force organised a medical and veterinary camp at Mandi, Loran, on Monday. The camp was inaugurated by the Commanding Officer of the RR battalion. Locals from remote villages of Loran tehsil visited the camp. Six doctors, including a gynaecologist, two women doctors and a dentist, along with paramedic staff provided medical help and diagnostic advice. As many as 1,000 persons of various age groups were checked up by the doctors and medicines were distributed to them free of cost. Alongside the camp, a veterinary doctor treated 250 animals.

Kedarnath Dham portals close from Oct 19:
The portals of Kedarnath Dham will be closed on October 19 while the same will be done on November 17 in the case of Badrinath Dham. As per the tradition, the head priests of both shrines announced this after due consultations with Hindu saints. These dates have been found auspicious for traditional closure of both shrines after a study of cosmic elements.

Remuneration for counsellors hiked: The government has increased remuneration for counsellors appointed at family courts across the state. The monthly remuneration to counsellors has been increased from existing Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000. The revised remuneration will be given with effect from October 1, 2009.
