Soft drinks on sale at Kisan Mela in Ludhiana. Ludhiana, September 18
In blatant violation of the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Act, some local manufacturing units were selling milk and soya milk without the trademark at Kisan Mela in PAU. A large number of stalls were also selling ice creams, soft drinks and juices, which did not have a date of manufacturing or date of expiry

Chawla cycle parts body chief
DS Chawla flashes victory sign after winning elections.Ludhiana, September 18
D S Chawla from Chawla International Group was elected the president of the United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers' Association (UCPMA) here today. Chawla defeated Inderjit Singh Navyug from Navyug Engineers. The results of general secretary post were not declared till filing of the report.

Farming becomes costlier
Ludhiana, September 18
Farming is becoming difficult and costlier day by day. The farming crisis in Punjab has deepened this year due to the failure of the monsoon, as a result of which the farmers had to invest more money to raise kharif crops, particularly paddy. This impression was given by the farmers from various parts of Punjab, who visited the two-day kisan mela of Punjab Agricultural University.

A vegetable transplanter developed by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) turned out to be a major attraction during the two-day Kisan Mela of PAU that concluded here today. The transplanter that can transplant seedlings from 1.5 to 2.5 acre of land in a day, attracted huge crowds.

Kisan Mela concludes
Ludhiana, September 18
A colourful cultural programme marked the concluding function of the two-day Kisan Mela of Punjab Agricultural University here today. Punjabi singers, including Badesha Jatt, Bibi Bhupinder Kaur Mohali, Jaswinder Dhanansu, Happy Jassowal, Gurdas Kaira and Kartar Dhugga enthralled the audience.

US Embassy team visits PAU

Muslim community in the city today offered prayer at the local Jama Masjid on the last Friday of the month of Ramzan. People thronged the Jama Masjid at around 11 am and in no time, the entire place was filled with devotees, due to which traffic at Field Ganj chowk, Shahpur road and Jail road was halted.

Probe into impounding of sale deeds
DC confiscates records from sub-registrar office
Ludhiana, September 18
Deputy Commissioner Vikas Garg today ordered an inquiry into the sale deeds impounded by the sub-registrar (West) following an inspection in the office here this morning.

Power board employees suspended
Jagraon, September 18
The PSEB SDO, Jagraon, suspended two of board’s employees on night duty for being drunk on duty hours. The matter came to light yesterday, when due to some fault, electricity to many residential colonies was snapped around 7 pm. When till 10 pm, the electricity was not restored by the department, many residents went to the PSEB complaint office only to find both of the night attendants drunk beyond their conscious in the office itself. The liquor bottles were lying scattered on the office floor along with them.

Youth killed in accident
Jagraon, September 18
A youth got killed yesterday when a Bolero jeep hit him, killing him on the spot. The accident occurred on Lakha village road last morning, when Amritpal Singh (23) of Chakar village, who was going toward Lakha village on his motorcycle (PB-25-J-3595), was hit by a speeding Bolero jeep (PB-30-D-9524) coming from the opposite side.

IT survey in city
Ludhiana, September 18
The Income Tax Department carried out surveys at five places in the city yesterday. Income Tax Commissioner K.K. Sinha gave orders for conducting these surveys which were carried out under the supervision of Joint Commissioner, Range VII, S.S. Narang. Four hosiery units and one sanitary and hardware store came under the department's scanner.

Murder accused held
Raikot, September 18
The Raikot police yesterday got a shot in the arm with the arrest of notorious leader of a gang wanted in a murder case and many other criminal cases. Jugraj Singh, a resident of Kulapatti, Raikot, a proclaimed offender in the infamous 2007 murder case in Ludhiana court complex, was arrested by the police party, led by ASI Nirmal Singh on the basis of a secret information.
