Rajiv Gandhi award
: Satinder Kaur Pannu, Director, Central College for Woman, Ghomman (Gurdaspur), has been honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani award at a function held in News Delhi. The National Integration and Economic Council, New Delhi, confers the award annually on prominent personalities across the nation.

Restructuring of Sanitation Dept
: Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal has ordered the restructuring of the Water Supply and Sanitation Department to ensure an equitable distribution of workload in its different wings. The Deputy CM felt that certain wings of the department were overloaded with work whereas others had a little work to do. Following the restructuring, the department has ordered transfers of Superintendent Engineers and Executive Engineers of the department. RK Vij, Superintendent Engineer, Sangrur, has been transferred and posted as Superintendent Engineer (Monitoring), HQ, Patiala.

Nominated
: To solve the problems of the Cooperative Labour and Construction Societies in Punjab, the government has constituted a state-level advisory board. According to official sources here on Thursday, Raghbir Kumar Banti of Hoshiarpur and Sukhdev Singh Bhinder have been nominated as members of the board which will act for a period of five years.

PMU threat
: Members of the Kirti Kisan Union (KKU) and the Pendu Mazdoor Union (PMU) held a joint meeting on Friday to decide on the traffic jam and rail roko to be held at various places on September 15. PMU president Tarsem Peter said the decision had been taken to protest against the unbundling of the PSEB,

AIDS workshop: The Nehru Yuva Kendra in association with the Punjab State AIDS Control Society, Health Department and youth clubs on Friday held an AIDS awareness workshop at Virsa Vihar Kendra. Chief guest, SDM-II Anupam Kaler urged the youth to shun anti-social practices . 

PM commended: Members of the 1984 Sikh Parvasi Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, commended Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for providing Rs 714-crore relief to the riot victims. Committee general secretary Manmohan Singh Saluja said the riot victims had written to the Prime Minister in this regard.

Roadways staff dharna
: On a call given by the Joint Action Committee, activists of the local unit of the Punjab Roadways Workers Union, held a dharna in front of the Punjab Roadways Depot here for two hours on Thursday to protest against the alleged anti-employee and anti-roadways policies of the state government. 

Weather system: Deputy Commissioner Gurkirat Kirpal Singh, in a press note on Friday said an automatic weather system had been installed in the district in collaboration with the India Meteorological Department for recording data in connection with the local temperature, rain, sun rise, sun set, etc.

‘Register NRI info’: Deputy Commissioner Gurkirat Kirpal Singh has asked the residents of the district whose family members are residing abroad to give proper information regarding NRIs registered at Counter 4 of the Suvidha Centre situated in the District Administrative Complex here. The residents could have a  performa at the counter to provide  information regarding NRIs.

Appointed: Dr Rajinder Singh Gill has been appointed head of the department of music, Punjabi University, for a period of three years.A noted singer and secretary-general of Punjab Heritage Foundation, Dr Gill replaces Dr Navjot Kaur Kasel. 

Supplementary exams: Supplementary examinations of BA/BSc/BCom of Punjabi University will begin on September 25. Roll numbers and datesheets have been dispatched. Candidates who do not receive their roll numbers by September 22 can collect the same on September 23 and 24. They must bring with them two photographs, the receipt of the submission of form, fee and other relevant documents. Datesheets are also available on the university website- www.punjabiuniversity.ac.in.

Postponed
: The district unit of the ETT Adhyapak Union that had given a call for gheraoing the office of the Zila Parishad here on September 15, on Friday postponed its programme. District president of the union Sukhvir Singh said if their demands were not fulfilled within a month, they would be compelled to start their agitation again.

TT meet from Sept 17
:Banyan Tree School, Sector 48, will be organising the CBSE-XII Cluster Table Tennis Tournament for Boys and Girls at the Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, from September 17 to 19 here. As many as 46 teams will be participating in the under-14, 16 and 19 category. 

PU community radio:The Government of India approved the community radio project of Panjab University yesterday. Vice-Chancellor Prof RC Sobti said the radio would be run by the students themselves.Fifty per cent of the content would be society based and the other 50 per cent would revolve around academic as well as entertainment material, he said.

Social worker dies:Veteran Om Prakash Aggarwal (89), founder of Arya College for Girls, today passed away after falling from the rooftop of his residence. He was then rushed to the Civil Hospital, Kharar, in a serious condition and was later referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, where he was declared brought dead. Aggarwal, who had established RSS wing in Kharar in 1940 was the senior leader of the BJP.

Encroachments removed from Sec 19:The Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, removed encroachments made by 13 shopkeepers in Sadar Bazar, Sector 19, here today, under the supervision of P K Sharma, Additional Commissioner, assisted by K D Sharma, enforcement inspector, along with the supporting staff.The anti-encroachment team of the corporation had to face mild resistance from the encroachers, but no untoward incident took place. 

Cops promoted:The police today promoted its 205 constables as head constables after 21 years at a function held at police lines, Sector 26, here today.SK Jain, IG, police, presided over the function and honoured the constables. He stressed that every police personnel should do his duty with due care.

Power shutdown
: To carry out the maintenance and repair work of 132 KV and 33 KV jumpers and droppers of the 132/33 KV Grid Substation, Bari Brahmana-1, and Grid Station, Miran Sahib, the power supply to the Industrial Area, Bari Brahmana, Narbada, Gangyal, Jakh, Vijaypur, Kartholi, RS Pura, Bishnah, Seora, Salehar and Miran Sahib shall remain affected on September 13 (7 am to 12 noon). The Power Department has asked people not to use air conditioners, heaters during peak load hours.

150 intoxicant capsules seized: The police arrested a driver of a passenger vehicle at Domel naka on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and seized 150 intoxicant capsules from his possession on Friday. Official sources said a police team from Jhajjar Kotli police station checked the vehicle at the Domel post this morning and seized 150 psychotropic drugs. The driver, Javed Iqbal, a resident of Ustad Mohalla, was arrested. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered. 

Release of 5 pc DA hailed: National Mazdoor Conference president Subash Shastri has hailed the Union Cabinet’s decision of releasing the instalment of 5 per cent DA due from July this year in favour of the central government employees. Shastri appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to release the instalment of the DA to the state employees and pensioners before Eid-ul-Fittr so that the employees and pensioners could get some relief from the rising prices of the essential commodities.

Best legislator award
: The Legislative Council has decided to institute a best legislator award on the pattern of the Assembly and it will be conferred on an “outstanding legislator” from this year, deputy chairman of the council Arvinder Singh Micky said on Friday. Legislators BR Kundal, Mohammad Yousuf Taing, Murtaza Ahmed Khan and Abdul Gani Vakil, principal secretary, Law, AH Kochak, director, Estates, Khurshid Ahmed and other officials attended the meeting.
