Harsimrat seeks funds:
To check the menace of drug addiction in the state, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Friday approached Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik and sought his support for the cause. She requested him to provide adequate funds for setting up super-speciality drug de-addiction centres in the state. She also demanded funds for setting up a school for mentally challenged children and an old-age home in the Bathinda region.

2 suspended for  taking bribe:
Vijaya Laxmi Bhadoo, chairperson, Punjab State Social Welfare Board, has suspended a CDPO and supervisor employed under the Integrated Child Development Scheme in Amritsar. Bhadoo said Joginder Kaur, CDPO, ICDS Block, Harsha Chhinna and Meena Kumari, supervisor, were arrested by the Vigilance Bureau for taking bribe of Rs 6,000 from Aaganwadi worker Pinder Kaur. “I always tell people as well as NGOs that if any person of my office harasses anyone, he/she may ring me up at 9356710070 even after working hours,” she said.

Mohali printing press: A sum of Rs 155 lakh has been earmarked for the purchase of new machinery of the Government Press at Mohali as the Punjab government has prepared the project for the modernisation of government printing presses. Stating this here on Wednesday, Printing and Stationery Minister Hira Singh Gabria said the requisite process for the purchase of machinery had been started and would be finalised soon.

NIIFT at Jalandhar soon: The establishment of the Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) at Jalandhar will cater to the need of trained fashion designers for the present requirement and future expansion of the industry and also assure job opportunities to the youth of backward region. Stating this, Industry and Local Government Minister Manoranjan Kalia said NIIFT would be a boon to leather/sport wear industry in and around Jalandhar.

Rs 260.60 cr for roads, bridges: A project of Rs 260.60 crore has been approved by Nabard for Ferozepur, Faridkot, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur districts under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) scheme. This project has 110 roads having a length of 948.63 km and 23 bridges which will be completed by the end of this financial year. PWD (B&R) Minister Parminder Singh Dindsa said Rs 5,490.64 lakh would be spent on nine roads of 139.66 km long and one bridge in Ferozepur district.

Woman sues ex-Civil Surgeon:
Manjit Kaur of the Ripudumanpura locality here has demanded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh through a legal notice from Dr Kuldeep Kaur Sahni, former Civil Surgeon, Patiala, and the Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, for damaging her reputation. According to the notice, a team raided the house of Manjit on April 24 to stop an illegal medical termination of pregnancy. However, it failed to gather any evidence.

Defacement of property:
In pursuance of the direction of the Election Commission regarding the prevention of defacement of property under the Model Code of Conduct, Ajit Joshi, District Magistrate, Sonepat, has issued fresh orders. He stated that any defacement of property whether public or private, carried out by any political party or candidate without written permission of the owner of the party concerned would be prosecuted under Sections 425, 426, 427,433, IPC, and Section 133 of the Criminal Procedure Code and also under the Haryana Prevention of Defacement of Property Act and Municipal Laws.

Salaries’ hike flayed:
The District Congress Committee (DCC) here has criticised the action of enhancing salaries of legislators, ministers and other functionaries by the BJP government by more than Rs 16,000 per month. It has called it as a mockery of democracy and majority as legislators were doling out bounties to themselves from the poor state exchequer while common people were suffering.

Students urged to take up sports: Students should ensure that they respect their teachers and and take equal part in studies and sports. This was said by SP Kuldip Sharma while inaugurating a 3-day annual school sports tournament at Govt Sr Sec School, Kothipura, today. Sharma said participation in sports was very essential for the development of a balanced personality.

Man rescued:
A 65-year-old man, who was caught in a flash flood in the Banner river of Kangra near Tanda hospital, was rescued by the police with the help of local people on Friday. SDPO Jeet Singh Thakur said Kartar Singh, a resident of Bakloo village of Chamba district, was caught in the flash flood in Banner khud this morning near DRPGMC, Tanda.

Illegal mining:
Minister for Industries Kishan Kapoor called upon mining committee officials to ensure curbing of illegal mining in the district and to conduct surprise checks of various mining sites from time to time. He was addressing the mining committee meeting here on Thursday. Kapoor expressed happiness over very a few illegal mining cases in Una district due to public awareness.

Sadhu found dead:
The police found the body of an unidentified sadhu in a park in Gole Market of Gandhi Nagar on Saturday morning. Sources revealed that a few morning walkers spotted the body near a plant and informed the police. The police took the body to the Government Medical College here for identification and autopsy. Medicines were recovered from the spot, indicating the sadhu was unwell.

Minister releases book: Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir has released three volumes of the book based on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at a function organised at Press Club in Jammu. The three volumes of the book are Integrated Pest Management, Innovation and Development Process, IPM Dissemination and Impact and Evaluation of Insecticide Resistance Management and Impact. The authors of the book are Rajinder Peshin and AK Dhawan.

Health centre damaged:
A health centre suffered partial damage when some unknown persons set it on fire in Baramulla district on Saturday, the police said. “Some unknown persons tried to set ablaze the health centre in Baba Reshi, 50 km from here, this morning. Timely action helped contain the fire and prevented it from spreading,” the police said. However, the health centre was partially damaged in the incident. A case has registered.

Grenade seized: The police on Saturday recovered a Chinese grenade in Baramulla district of north Kashmir. The explosive device was recovered from Eidgah Kreeri, 40 km from here, the police said. The grenade was defused later.
