58 milk samples fail test
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 28 The fat content found in 60 percent of these samples was a mere 3 to 4 per cent. According to a dairy owner in Sirhind, impure milk having 20 to 50 per cent water content was often sold at Rs 9 or 10 per litre but a large number of milkmen were selling it at Rs 20 or 22 per litre. Though the dairy department claims to have been taking regular milk samples, the practice of mixing water with milk has been going on unabated. Dairy department officials said only 25 per cent of the samples were found to be acceptable and nearly 25 per cent of these had failed during the seven days of random sampling in Sirhind and Fatehgarh Sahib areas. Milkfed officials said if minimum fat content in milk was 5.1 and thickness 8.8 then the price of milk should not exceed Rs 15 per litre. The dairy department officials said the report of samples had been forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner. The officials said they only had the authority to seize adulterated milk and could not initiate action against those who mixed water with milk. They claimed that packaged milk, with fat content printed on the packets by companies, was a more viable option these days as compared to the milk purchased from other sources. |
