Drowning
Rajpura, August 16 His father Mohan Lal Sharma said some nearby dhaba owners had revealed that the boys were in an inebriated state and perhaps four of them had consumed liquor. Mohan Lal was on the way to Hardwar today to perform the last rites of his son. He added that the cops were yet to confirm whether the boys accompanying his son were drunk. Raising doubts over the integrity of police officials investigating the case, Mohan Lal alleged that the police was “blindly”agreeing with the statements of the boys accompanying Sahil. He pointed out that despite the registration of a case against all six, including Manjot Singh, Sikander Sharma, Jasjit Singh, Prabhjot Singh, Sanjiv Rao (from Chandigarh) and Abhishesk Sud from Mohali, on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy had been framed. Sahil’s body was found floating in the river near Ghanaur and some passersby informed divers, who were searching for Sahil’s body. He said among the accused boys only Manjot used to come to their house in Mohali and remained in touch with Sahil most of the times over the phone. The police had refused to arrest them over the pretext of lack of evidence. “It is clear that the boys are aware of the entire incident and can reconstruct the entire episode that led to Sahil’s death. But the police is least concerned,” said Mohan Lal. The family alleged that the authorities of SD College, Chandigarh, had not even informed them about the whereabouts or attendance of the boys. The accused had claimed that Sahil went to wash his hands and clothes after they got soiled while pushing the car out of mud. “There is not an iota of truth in this as there is no provision near the canal for anyone to wash their hands,” he said. He said whosoever wanted to wash hands would have to stoop 3 feet to touch the water, which was impossible. “Moreover, my son was hydrophobic. He remained away from water and never took bath even at religious places,” Sahil’s family members said. The SMO of the Rajpura Civil Hospital, Dr Bhupinder Singh, said preliminary medical reports revealed that the boy had died due to drowning. The viscera reports of the body had been sent for chemical examination at the Kharar laboratory and the report would take nearly two months. The SHO, Rajpura Sadar, said the police could not arrest the accused until Sahil’s family members provided some clue against the accused. |

Fund Crunch
Ropar, August 16 As per a government proposal, the then MLA, Nangal, and parliamentary secretary Rana KP Singh, laid the foundation stone for a new building at Giani Zail Singh Nagar in May 2005. The cost of the project was at whopping Rs 3 crore. Government released a grant of Rs 35 lakh with which present structure came into being, which was supposed to get completed in a record time. The public works department (PWD) was entrusted the construction work. The department further floated tenders and work was started by June 6. However, as per sources, no other set of grant was released for the construction purposes and the work came to an abrupt halt. District education officer (secondary) Dharam Singh said the department has written to the authorities concerned a number of times to get the building completed at the earliest. “On our part, we keep on sending reminders. The matter is also in knowledge of district administrative authorities. PWD officials are more aware about the project,” he said. In absence of any vigil, the incomplete building has already fallen victim to vagaries of mischief mongers and has turned into a haven for addicts. Some migrants are now living in the building and its sprawling green belt, which has now become more of an eyesore in Giani Zail Singh Nagar locality. Even the boundary wall of the building has got damaged. |

Youngsters take dip in canal, risk lives
Rajpura, August 16 Even after the recent death of a Mohali youth in the Bhakra-Narwana branch in Rajpura, there is no decrease in the number of teenagers, especially from school and colleges, taking bath in the rivers, canal and other water channels. Three incidents have been reported in the canal during the past just one month. “The young boys from Chandigarh, Mohali and other nearby areas come here for party. Most of them have taken a few shots of liquor to feel elated and take a dip in the canal,” said Hakam Singh, a resident of nearby village. Most of the accidents take place when people are drunk and fail to control themselves, even if they know swimming, said the residents. They added that the flow of water did not allow everyone to swim in the canal. He said schoolchildren and collegiate instead of going to their schools and colleges spent time adjoining these canals. The area residents demanded that the police patrolling should be increased in these areas to reduce the number of causalities that took place during taking the bath in the rivers. Sadar SHO Amrik Singh said efforts were always made to clear the banks but the canal was too long and wide and people took advantage of it, he said. |
