Jhajjar, July 23 However, the Gehlout family is still hopeful of an amicable solution to the controversy. It feels that the panchayat’s diktat is “unethical” and some members of the panchayat admit to it, the panchayat may change its verdict. Earlier, the Kadian Barha khap panchayat, led by its acting president Raj Singh, organised a meeting at Dubaldhan village here to discuss the plea of the Gehlout family for taking a final decision on it. According to information, after a long debate on the issue, the panchayat rejected the plea saying that since the family had not tendered any apology for its “unsocial act”, it would not alter its order of “eviction”. Talking to The Tribune, Raj Singh said, “The language in the application was unpleasant and objectionable. Moreover, neither did the Gehlout family feel sorry for violating social norms of ‘bhaichara’, nor did it express any regret their ‘wrongdoing’. That’s why the application was rejected.” He reiterated that the panchayat was firm on its stand and it would not leave any stone unturned to ensure that its order of “expulsion” was complied with. Meanwhile, the Gehlout family is staying with relatives in Dujana village here under a security cover after the “exile”. Some of the relatives have gone to Dharana village to stay at their house and take care of their cattle and fields. The family had moved an application with the Kadian khap to review the exile orders yesterday, saying that it was not feasible for them to leave the village permanently. HC notice to state
The gotra controversy over the three-month-old marriage of Ravinder and Shilpa Rani from Dharana village in Jhajjar district today saw the Punjab and Haryana High Court issuing a notice of motion to Haryana, the Director-general of Police, Jhajjar, superintendent of police and other respondents. Taking up the matter, Justice KC Puri directed the continuation of the security cover and fixed the case for August 12. In a petition jointly filed by Ravinder and his father Rohtash, directions to the state and other respondents have been sought for the protection of life and liberty. Directions have also been sought from the state authorities concerned to initiate immediate action against autocratic individuals interfering and issuing diktat to break the nuptial knot. |
Poor Basic Amenities
Dabwali (Sirsa), July 23 Punjab’s Kilianwali town is situated just adjacent to Haryana’s Dabwali town and the new vegetable market, where the traders have shifted their business now, is situated at a distance of 2 km from their old place of business. The move of the traders is a big embarrassment as well as revenue loss for the Haryana Agriculture Marketing Board authorities in Haryana and a corollary gain for Punjab. The vegetable market in Dabwali, which was buzzing with business activities till yesterday, wore a deserted look today, while business activities have started under a shed at Kilianwali from today. The market committee authorities have described the action of the traders as pressure tactics to continue evasion of revenue. The vegetable market in this border town of the district was running for the past almost 50 years. “We, 18 arhtiyas and many other small shopkeepers in the second largest vegetable market of the district after Sirsa, have been paying Rs 20-25 lakh as revenue to the market committee towards market fees and an equal amount towards the HRDF annually, but the authorities have failed to provide any facilities worth the name during the past 50 years. There is no lighting, no drinking water and no toilet facilities in the vegetable market,” alleged Labhu Sethi, a trader of the Dabwali vegetable market. He alleged that the new secretary of the market committee had been pressurising them to increase the payments towards the market fees by 25 per cent, though the business had gone down due to recession and lesser production of vegetables due to poor rains. They said the Punjab authorities had assured them all types of amenities in the Kilianwali vegetable market and had already provided them a big shed to start their business. Babu Ram Verma, secretary of the market committee, Dabwali, maintained that the traders were resorting to pressure tactics. “I have recently joined duty at Dabwali and called a meeting of the traders to increase the revenue payment by 20 to 25 per cent, which is the government norm. But, the traders have been trying to coerce the authorities to agree to the current revenue collection,” he maintained. |

Former minister quits INLD
Rewari, July 23 He made the announcement at a meeting of his supporters in Belri Kalan village, near here. Asserting that he was under pressure from his supporters to sever ties with the INLD, he publicly “apologised” for such a drastic step to party supremo Om Prakash Chautala, whom, he said, he held in high esteem. Citing the reasons behind his leaving the INLD, Yadav said he and his supporters had been opposing the politics of Rampura House, the political bastion of former Union Minister Rao Birender Singh and his sons - Rao Inderjit Singh, Rao Ajit Singh and Rao Yadvender Singh, for the past two decades. He said while Rao Ajit Singh’s recent induction into the INLD was “unpalatable” to them, the overt and covert support provided at the behest Chautala to boost the electoral fortunes of Congress candidate Rao Inderjit Singh, a scion of Rampura House, in the recent Lok Sabha elections finally forced him and his supporters to take the decision. Jagdish Yadav announced that he would contest the coming Assembly elections from the newly carved out Kosli constituency in Rewari district. He praised the “pro-people” policies of the Hooda government, allowing enough room for speculations about his future political move. Rewari city INLD chief Harish Arora and other office-bearers of its district unit also announced to quit the INLD on the occasion. |
INLD alleges irregularities in job selection
Chandigarh, July 23 In a statement issued here yesterday, secretary-general of the INLD Ajay Singh Chautala said a close relative of a Congress MLA was recently appointed to a senior post in the Vidhan Sabha without following the rules and regulations. So much so, he said, the post was not even advertised though the Supreme Court had ruled that no post could be filled without it being advertised. Chautala also alleged that the relative of the Congress MLA did not even possess the requisite experience of six years as an advocate but was still given the post. He claimed that the post was created in a day though ordinarily it took a long time to do this. The file for the creation of the post in the Vidhan Sabha was cleared by the Finance Department, the Chief Secretary’s office and the Chief Minister’s office the same day i.e. on July 17. He said the INLD was committed to exposing such unfair practices. |
Revised Pay Scales
Kurukshetra, July 23 It also threatened relay fast at Kurukshetra University and Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, simultaneously from August 7, if the government failed to accept the demand of the teachers. Announcing an action programme at a joint press conference here, Prof UV Singh, vice-president of the HFUCTO, Dr Parmesh Kumar and Dr Kamraj Sandhu, secretary and vice-president, respectively, of the Kurukshetra University Teachers’ Association (KUTA), alleged that even after a notification of the revised UGC scales by the Union HRD Ministry, the government was bent on testing patience of teachers. Condemning the delay in the implementation of revised scales and non-payment of interim relief equivalent to 40 per cent of arrears to teachers of government-aided colleges, UV Singh alleged that it was a deliberate attempt to divide the teaching community. Reiterating the demand for the implementation of recommendations of the UGC in toto, Kamraj Sandhu said the HFUCTO had given a call to university and college teachers to wear black badges as a mark of protest from July 27 to July 30. HFUCTO members would hold a dharna in front of the office of the Commissioner, Higher Education, Panchkula, on July 31. |
