Pakistan Tour Of Sri Lanka
Colombo, July 14 Sri Lanka cruised home by seven wickets with two days to spare, skipper Kumar Sangakkara leading the way with a fluent 46 after opener Malinda Warnapura made 54. Of the previous five series between the two nations on Sri Lankan soil, Pakistan had won three and drawn two, but the tourists had only themselves to blame for allowing the hosts to re-write history. Pakistan’s meek surrender against the second new ball came after debutant opener Fawad Alam hit a superb 168 and shared a record stand of 200 for the second wicket with skipper Younus Khan. The partnership was Pakistan’s highest for the second wicket against Sri Lanka, surpassing the 151 by Mohsin Khan and Majid Khan at Lahore in 1982. The 23-year-old Alam batted for more than six hours to amass the highest score by a Pakistani batsman on Sri Lankan soil, surpassing the 151 by Salim Malik at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo in 1997. But Pakistan lost their last nine wickets for 35 runs, their third successive collapse in the series that highlighted their reputation as one of the most unpredictable sides in modern cricket. — AFP Scoreboard

Bangladesh Tour Of West Indies
Kingston, July 14 Shakib Al Hasan formalised Bangladesh’s second Test victory ever, when he trapped Tino Best plumb in front for nine with a dipping full toss, and ended with three wickets from 28.1 overs. The result means that Bangladesh lead the two-Test series 1-0 with the final match set to start on Friday at Grenada’s Queen’s Park Stadium Complex. Bangladesh’s victory which came about 4-1/2 years after their solitary Test win against Zimbabwe on home soil in Chittagong was made more remarkable because their new captain and primary fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza spent the entire West Indies innings off the field nursing a knee injury he aggravated earlier in the match.

Mumbai, July 14 Clive Lloyd, the captain of the West Indies sides that won in 1975 and 1979 in England, India’s 1983 winning-team members Balwinder Sandhu and Dilip Vengsarkar, Sri Lanka’s Aravinda D’Silva who played a major role in the 1996 Cup winning squad and Michael Bevan of Australia who was part of the team that won the crown in 1999 and 2003 were those present. The sound and laser show that showcased the key moments of all the previous World Cups was a breathtaking affair. Lorgat sought to dispel fears of one-day format being overtaken by the huge popularity of the Twenty20 version saying that the limited overs World Cup continued to be ICC’s showpiece event. “The (50-over) World Cup is the flagship event of the ICC. What we have will hold up in the future,” he announced to the audience which had several former Mumbai-based Test cricketers including Ajit Wadekar, Bapu Nadkarni and Umesh Kulkarni. Lorgat also said that the 2011 World Cup would be over in 40-plus dates and would involve 14 teams. Pawar, the chairman of the 2011 World Cup Organising Committee, announced that the Indian board has decided to keep the ticket prices at affordable rates to encourage the student community to witness the matches and reiterated that Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium would host the final. “The Indian board has decided to keep the rates of the tickets low to encourage the student community. We don’t want to make too much money out of gates. This has come after what we saw in the West Indies,” he added. — PTI India to host Pak’s eight matches The Central Organising Committee (COC) of the 2011 World Cup on Tuesday recommended that India should host eight of the 14 cricket matches that were scheduled to take place in Pakistan. The COC met here to provide the ICC Board with a recommendation as to where, within Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, the 14 matches originally allocated to Pakistan should be staged. — IANS |

Mumbai, July 14 Kambli, who studied with Tendulkar in the 'Shardashram' school, said he had never spoken anything against Tendulkar in a reality TV show and termed the report as "completely baseless". "I have never said anything against Tendulkar. He is my friend for 26 years, people should know that I will never say such a thing against my friend. He is currently in London and I will meet him soon," Kambli told reporters here. New Delhi: The Cricket Board today dismissed as “baseless” former Indian player Vinod Kambli’s charge that he was a victim of racial discrimination on selection matters. Kambli is reported to have made these allegations against the BCCI in a TV reality show. “It is completely a baseless and uncalled for charge. BCCI does not believe in getting into all this. In fact, BCCI is one body which is fighting against racism at the international level,” BCCI’s Finance and Media Committee Chairman Rajiv Shukla said.

Man City sign Tevez
Manchester City’s attempts to load their squad with stellar players continued apace last night, as talks progressed rapidly with Arsenal on a possible deal for Emmanuel Adebayor partnering Carlos Tevez, whose move to the club was sealed yesterday.
On a day when Sir Alex Ferguson introduced Michael Owen, the striker who effectively cost him nothing, and told Manchester United supporters he would “placate fans in one way... by not being stupid” with big-money purchases, City were putting the failure to hire Samuel Eto’o immediately behind them. They offered a five-year deal worth (pounds sterling)130,000 a week to Adebayor, a player effectively put up for sale by ArsEne Wenger, for whom his career prevarications have proved too much. City were surprised by how receptive Arsenal were when they made their approach at the weekend, within 24 hours of failing in their attempt to sign Eto’o. Arsenal are believed to want £25m for the Togo international, a fee comfortably within City’s range. There is also still confidence that John Terry is receptive to a move to City, with suggestions yesterday that the player is keen that any such move should be a smooth rather than a poisonous
one. — By arrangement with The Independent |
