Beggar menace in Doon markets
Dehradun, May 22 The prominent market areas in the city where beggars can be easily located in groups are Ashley Hall, Rajpur Road, Paltan Bazar and Dilaram Chowk. Beggars work in groups and family members are assigned different locations to collect money. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, they earn a lot of money from religious-minded people. This ensures that the beggars have a peaceful week ahead. “Beggars are definitely a nuisance. Particularly on Tuesdays and Saturdays, they make it a point to collect one rupee from every shop,” said Pramod Chawla, owner, Archies. “They end up harassing our customers so we are left with no choice except giving them money and immediately ordering them to leave,” Chawla said. “We had to employ a security guard especially to shun away beggars who used to get inside our ice-cream parlour. At times, customers are forced to give them something to eat,” said Dolly, sales executive, Baskin Robbins. “The beggars here are in a hale-and-hearty condition as there are lot of eating joints in the area,” said Dolly. Beggars meticulously plan their strategy and place their family members at different destinations to catch hold of newly wed couples, the college crowd and couples with infants to entrap them with their sweet words. “On weekends, one can find beggars lingering over the entire market place and causing problems in parking. From the past two to three years, the number of beggars has increased in leaps and bounds. This has become a major obstacle in maintaining the tranquility of any market area in Doon,” said Ravinder, a shop owner. “Whenever I am near the Barista Coffee Shop at Rajpur, I find an old lady who resides in the nearby area. She makes sure that I part with some money,” said Rohan Raj, a student. He added, “The government should keep a check on their increasing numbers and should give them some work so that they stop nagging the crowd.” The Parade Ground, where exhibitions, seminars and other important functions are conducted, has become their temporary living area. “They litter the entire area. Beggars, who are suffering due to leprosy, can be spared, but the others have should be removed from the ground,” said Vipin Jain, a shopkeeper. Inspector General, Garhwal, MA Ganpathy said, “Till now, we haven’t really gone into the matter in depth as we never faced any serious problems from beggars. “Whenever we have received complains of harassment and robbery, we have taken a note of the culprit and punished him. “In the future too, the police will be vigilant enough to lend a helping hand to the public who, at times, are needlessly bothered by the beggars,” the IG said. |
Keep your space cool with plants
Dehradun, May 22 Seasonal flowers such as jienia, balsam, celocia, murgakesh, cosmos are attracting crowd to judiciously utilise space in their house or office. “From past 32 years I am managing this nursery, and people in the city are very fond of flowers and fruits. Flower exhibitions and media exposure encourage people to enhance the beauty of their living spaces,” said Delu Khatri, manager of a nursery. Lot of people with space constraint are opting for indoor plants. The most common indoor plants are monastaria, Trenia, money plant, arequa plant and few others. “In summers plants should be watered everyday with a good fertiliser, which can be used in plenty in the initial stages of its growth to keep the plant healthy for years,” said Delu. Craze for medicinal plants like as aloe vera, stevia, bail patri, ashvagandha, museli is also increasing. “I have planted aloe vera as it is excellent for skin and has cooling properties,” said Anchal, a student. “The price per plant starts from Rs 50 paise and goes up to Rs 2500,” added Delu |
