Polished act
It was a mini convocation of sorts! With the former super-model Meyhar Bhasin bestowing the certificates and, all the while, with pleasure, posing for the cameras and a bunch of over 20 students making the 'thank you speeches' on getting the paper credentials. Yet again in the tricity, this once to felicitate the students of Meyhar Bhasin Academy, on the grand finale of a personality development and grooming workshop, she talks about her institute, the workshop, defining personality, her students, grooming and the list goes on…Let's get going. A fraction of the current countless lot of models get into the 'do it all yourself' mode, with a choreographer, grooming expert, model, TV compere, all making way into her resume, so what's her definition of personality? "To me it means the aura, the whole package and persona. It's like when a person walks into the room, rather than you looking at the people, people should look at you say 'Wow! What a personality'," she says. Innate and individual as the persona is made out to be, Meyhar feels it's all about breaking the ice and there's no time frame attached when it comes to developing one’s personality. "Well all the participants and the change in them testifies. Also it's just a question of breaking the ice, over here we make them interact with each other and provide a very friendly and energetic environment." Hard as it might be to visualize her as a bundle of nerves, nevertheless she says, "When I started out, initially even I would be like 'Oh my god! I have to compete with all these girls' Where does she think people lack, when it comes to persona? "A lot of people are talented and from good families. I think it's just a matter of exposure, because somewhere that's not there and that's why…" High time, the nature of questions logically drifting to the personal front, what's going on? She lists, "Recently, I did an event with Priyanka Chopra for the launch of Tag Heur watches. Besides, the PC jewelers beauty contest kept me really busy, where I trained the models, choreographed." Elaborating on the initial one, "I compere the whole event, organize it, lighting everything, and choreograph it," she adds, "This is something that I enjoy more and here also by the end of the year, we will organize an event." Perhaps, a beauty competition. She clears the air, "No, it won't be a beauty competition, because the idea of holding beauty pageant with a personality course doesn't gel." manpriya@tribunemail.com |
Knot above gossip It sure seems to be the season of splits when it comes to celebrities. Hits or flops, one thing that keeps stars in the news is relationship rumours. If it was R & B stars Chris Brown and Rihanna who ruled tabloids for the alleged assault, on home turf, rumours are rife about a Hrithik-Suzanne split. Hrithik, the actor, who's been linked to his Mexican co-star in film Kites, Barbara Mori, rubbished the gossip, claiming to be on picnic with his wife, kids and in-laws. Going back to the Chris-Rihanna story, the couple is going through lots of ups and downs. Rihanna is reported to be scared of accepting her guilty lover, charged of assaulting her, lest she upsets her fans. As these stories get prominent media coverage (for the simple reason that they sell), we find out if this is the cost that celebrities have to pay for their fame or, on the contrary, this is what keeps them in the limelight.
“People idolise stars, be it actor or players, and whatever they do catches the public eye. Most of the people are not satisfied with their lives, so look up to them, trying to imitate. So, celebrities' every little detail is in the news and people's love for gossip gets them the media coverage," believes artist Viren Tanwar. As regards stars' family lives, he says, "Probably more than the fame, it's the big egos that come in the way of a smooth relationship, leading to conflicts." But then a true believer in happy marriages, he says: "As long as the couple is accepting, tolerant and sensible, there is no reason why shouldn't a marriage work. Be it for celebrities or the populace, marriages do work." Prof Kiranpreet, city sociologist, puts it this way: "Celebrities are people of 'exceptional dynamism' and that's what makes them different from the ordinary folks. They have qualities coupled with high aspirations that make them scale heights. But then, marriage is a different ballgame altogether that requires time, devotion and understanding. May be the desire to excel in the career takes its' toll on the relationship." According to her, "For any marriage to work, compatibility is the key factor. Earlier, women would sacrifice their career for the sake of family but not any more. With both husband and wife working, it gets even more difficult to strike a balance between career and married life. As long as work sharing happens inside the home too and partners are sensitive to each other's needs, marital life should work. I am sure there would be couples, celebrity or not, who are leading a happy married life." Says Gurdip K Dhir, retired HoD, Department of Psychology, GCG-11, "As for celebrities, they are high achievers, largely professionally oriented. So, personal relationships suffer, at times, at the cost of the career. Of course, gossip gets them mileage, some do it intentionally, others unintentionally, but then they are programmed to be in limelight." As regards compatibility in a couple, she says: "For a relationship to survive, one of the two needs to be submissive. And, here too, the prime condition is to accept your spouse with both positives and negatives. The ego clash gets more intense if both partners are ambitious and can lead to split." However, those looking for a fairy tale marriage need not get disappointed, "In psychology, we believe you attract what you desire. So, yes, 'they lived happily ever after' stories are possible," she signs off. mona@tribunemail.com

Fun won’t fizzle… Handy tips Make a budget, and then stick to it. Involve family in planning, packing and
implementing Travel light. Pram is out, sling is
in. Have a solid breakfast Explore at your own pace Come summers and we are eager to jet off to our dream destinations, looking forward to that perfect time when there is no room for routine and scope for schedule. But it’s not easy to plan ‘joyrides’, and even if we manage to skip the first hurdle, there’s a second, a third and a fourth one waiting for us ahead. After all, life seldom sticks to the plan. The result: Stress, a perfect holiday spoiler, something one can’t afford, especially in the fun season. Worried? Don’t be. Here are few handy tips that will help you to head off the holiday blues. “First things first, sit with your family and decide on priorities. You don’t want gloomy kids trudging along as you shop to your heart’s content. We try to find a destination that strikes a balance between different preferences,” says Parneet Kaur, customer relationship executive with Thomas Cook. “Finances come next, and never have they been as important as in today’s scenario. One really can’t enjoy if you keep worrying about the expenditure. So, planning and then sticking to the budget is the key,” she adds. Sanjay Kumar, who handles ticketing with S. B. Travels-34, believes that timely booking saves a lot of hassle: “Time is the key. If planning starts early, one gets pretty good deals.” Agrees Ritu Kochhar, founder director of INIFD-8, an avid traveller: “Holidays can cause stress and the trick is to organise. It’s a good idea to research well before leaving and have important numbers like that of hotel, taxi service, airline providers handy.” Another major hassle is packing. “One is bound to shop during travel that will only leave you with excess baggage by the end of the trip. So travel light, mix and match dresses. But don’t forget to carry essential medicines especially if kids are along,” she adds. Indu Sharma of Panchkula suggests: “Don’t do things under status pressure. Just because your colleagues are going abroad doesn’t mean you need to do the same. A relaxed family outing with family members to a nearby hill station would be much better than a hurried trip abroad that leaves you in a financial crunch.” Also important is having a comfortable trip, “Eat healthy. Yes, holidays mean indulging yourself in sumptuous treats but then a solid breakfast, doses of fruit and juice interspersed during the day would be great,” she adds. Last but not the least, set some time aside for yourself. As much is important to connect with family so is to be in tune with oneself. Keep a buffer of a day or two in between travel and joining back the work. You don’t wanna end up in office with puffy eyes, leg cramps and lack of sleep. Forget about perfection. Plans do fail. Don’t let trifle changes in schedule mar the whole

Eight-fold path
A dating guru duo has charted eight reasons for women to drop their boyfriends immediately. L. Rx and P. L. Ayer, though are “gurus for men”, have decided to start helping the “fairer” sex by giving advice to women about men through their popular website DatingToRelating.com. Women can learn on the website what all men do to trick them, and how to bust a player who is lying and cheating on them, reports Associated News.US. L. Rx also guides women as to what they should watch out for or avoid in their selection of men, reports AssociatedNews.US. The first reason he suggests is that a woman should leave a man immediately if he ever hits or slaps her, or even threatens her in a rough way. Another suggestion is that a man who tries to move into a woman’s apartment, as he doesn’t have a job or a place to stay, should be dumped because men are supposed to be the providers. He says that a woman should never support a man because it may seem cool for a while, but in the long run she will regret it. The third reason for dumping a boyfriend is that he plays with his girlfriend like they are one of his buddies, as a man who can’t make the distinction between men and women is a real idiot. L. Rx further says that men having no male friends, or those whose male friends are a bunch of jerks, should be dropped immediately because there is a reason why good men don’t like him. The fifth ground for immediately dumping a boyfriend is that he is jealous or possessive for no reason, as such men tend to project their own moral code on their girlfriends. L. Rx feels that a guy wanting a committed relationship after one date should be nuts. Boys who straight away approaches a woman and tells her how hot she is should also be rejected, he says. Finally, the eighth reason for dumping a beau is that he is married or in a relationship. Such guys should be dropped the minute a woman finds
out.

Negative impact
A new study from Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) has revealed that mothers with many negative thoughts and feelings are likely to give unhealthy food to their kids. The researchers have found that mothers who were emotionally unstable, anxious, angry, sad, had poor self-confidence or a negative view of the world were far more likely to give their child sweet and fatty foods. In the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, the researchers examined a total of 27 763 mothers, who were asked how often and how much their 18 month old child ate of 36 types of food and drink. This is the age children learn to prefer sweet and fatty food over healthy food. According to psychologist Eivind Ystrom at the NIPH, these maternal personality traits fall under a collective name of high negative affectivity (negative emotions). These people often have a lower stress threshold, giving up quicker when faced with obstacles and often experience lack of control of the child. “I think that mothers compensate for this either by trying to force healthy food into their child or hold the sweet-bag strings extra tightly,” said Ystrom. “They try to balance poor control by actually using more control. Earlier studies have shown that controlling behaviour among parents is linked with a more sugar-rich diet among children. “People with a lot of negative affectivity often express worry and appear to be helpless and insecure. Research into this type can help to create a toolbox of advice to relieve the feeling of stress and lack of coping and improve the child’s diet,” Ystrom added.

Aroma out of coma
Tom wouldn’t have imagined that her girlfriend’s fake tan - which he always griped about - would one day help save his life. His girlfriend Jo Ventham was a die-hard fan of fake tan, no matter how much her boyfriend moaned about the smell. And it was this smell that helped get him out of coma he’s been in for 9 days. Tom was attacked on a night out that left him fighting for life. He was in a coma and on a life-support machine after been head butted by a man following an argument. Like any other girlfriend Jo wanted him to get out of the coma and get well soon, and she hoped that smothering smell of her fake tan could do the needful. “Tom had always moaned about the smell of it. And I knew that if he could smell anything at all he’d pick up on that and know I was there,” the Mirror quoted her as saying. According to Jo, who has been going out with Tom for three-and-a-half years, doctors said while he’s still in coma he might be able to smell things. “They also told us he might be able to smell things, so I decided I would try my best to let him know I was with him,” said Jo. Jo used to douse herself in familiar scents - using her favourite shampoo and applying her favourite Nina Ricci perfume. She even went for fake tan. It did work and Tom finally woke up.

Scentsation! When we say summer; clothes change, food intake varies, activities alter; even our lifestyle changes. So, why not the fragrance we use. And when it comes to summer fragrance, technically, we are talking about a lasting smell. Although all perfumes should be enduring, summer smells should withstand the excessive sweat as we wear looser, lighter and even skimpier clothes. So, for the summer you may be better served with a nice light cologne or eau-de-toilette (even though you may have to re-apply it occasionally), as it’s true that colognes and eau-de-toilette do not last as long as perfumes. But it’s the breezy effect of a deodorant that would help you sail through the sweat and heat of summer. Read on to find out more about the summer scent. “It’s the very lightness of colognes that makes them a favourite for summers”, says Anju, proprietor Styl Studio, Panchkula. Ask her why is a deo better than a perfume in summers and she says, “Deo’s are meant to fight perspiration and they even reduce it. As for perfumes, they are higher in density and when applied on the skin they merge with the body sweat, emitting a foul smell. So, before one buys a fragrance for summer, he/she should keep in mind: the milder the better.” Lending some tips to pick and choose, Anju says, “Apart form colognes and deos people can even go for seltzers. They are mild an can be applied right after shower, leaving you with a fresh feeling for the day.” And what smells should people pick, “Lily, mild musk, lotus and bamboo are wonderful for summers.” That’s about the preference of fragrance what about sales. “Summer is definitely the time for lemony and floral fragrances. And we see people picking roll-ons, deos and colognes more than perfumes. Well, these days we see both men and women prefer to pick the new crop of so-called fruity-floral perfumes that blend fruity notes into a light floral scent,” says Rohit Gawri, owner Peshwari-19. Ask him which are the hot favourities. “Adidas, Nike and Ajmal are much liked.” Adds Anju, “It’s strange but male fragrances are milder than women’s, though women like softer smells and men strong.” Well, talking more about whiffs, it has been observed that the fragrance of your body not only expresses the way you feel but also affects your overall personality. Thinking zara hatka we though what if a person chooses the perfume as per his/her sun signs. “It has been studied and reported by various astrologers all over the world that a person’s charm would be doubled if one chooses the perfume as per there sun signs,” says astrologer P. Khurrana. He adds, “ Fragrances not only lend you a fresh feeling, but they also infuse positive energy.” So, next time you are sniffing on a perfume to buy, keep in mind your birth date too. jigyasachimra@tribunemail.com |

Even literally speaking, it was a classroom session on jewellery making, with the faculty giving a presentation a la “Filigree has been derived from the Latin word filum and granum meaning thread and grain!” The Jewellery Design and Technology Institute-35 held a workshop on a traditional craft from Orissa, filigree, on Wednesday. What you see is not what you get…The glittering glaring piece or ornament isn’t what it was, how it began…There are endless twists and turns, everlasting tools and procedure, infinite alterations through ceaseless final touches before that mesmerizing necklace you spent a fortune on, becomes a sight to behold! Said Ritu Malik, the CEO, “We make our students use the filigree technique in contemporary designs.” Wherein very fine wire’s bent into various patterns to make jewellery as were evident on display through the miniature fashion show held comprising two models. Intricate patterns weaved into a theme, a butterfly or flower at times really large. Says Ritu, “At times, people say, who wears such big designs, but they make for good pieces for a glam show. We also don’t want to restrict our students when they are experimenting.” Accordingly, the action shifts to the practical lab where a craftsman, Rattan shows the inch by inch painful detailing that goes into making any piece, with setting, polishing, cutting, wire bending and soldering, comprising a quarter of the process. A medium sized pair of earrings could take anything from five to seven days. Talking of revival of traditional crafts, what else is on the line? Says Ritu, “We are planning on holding a costume jewellery workshop and later, on diamond grading.” — Manpriya Khurana |

Relatively speaking Switch off
“I strongly believe that a summer getaway for at least 10 to 15 days is a must. But care should be taken when one is out on a vacation. Usually, we go out for a holiday physically but carry our mobile phone along, which practically means that we are mentally still in our daily routine. I understand it’s not feasible to switch off the mobiles completely but at least for a few days in a year. That time out from regular routine, office work, in a different setting definitely helps a couple come closer. Personally, we believe in spontaneous trips though, I guess, planning would be necessary when we have kids in future.” Pankaj Bawa
Exploring unknown
“The hectic schedules leave little or no time for couples to interact in day-to-day life. It’s especially tough for people with their own business as working hours stretch very long. So, we try to take out some time off during summers and explore some new places. Summer also means that kids’ schools are off, so one can travel without any stress. Exploring fresh places along with your spouse also helps you get to know a newer side to his/ her own personality that you miss in the hectic schedules of daily life.” Usha Sharma
Partner’s choice
The modern lifestyle, wherein both husband and wife are in demanding jobs, leave practically no time for each other. Summer getaways are probably the only time when one can leave worries home and relax, rejuvenate and rebuild the relationship. It’s time when couple can share feelings or each others’ hobbies. One fun way is to visit places that are close to your spouse’s heart. Exploring such places together is sure to bring the couple closer. Navin Sharma

Koffee break Ekta Choudhury, crowned the Pantaloons Femina Miss India Universe 2009 Sunday, says that apart from the month-long rigorous classes in grooming, fitness and diction for the event, her honesty and never-say-die attitude helped her in winning the title. “I always believed in myself. I feel that my honesty played a pivotal role in my victory because I always speak my mind and what I believe in,” Choudhury said. “Honesty will never let you down. If you are honest and a hard worker, things will definitely fall in place, sooner or later. You just have to believe in yourself. I did that because I knew it was now or never for me,” she said. Standing tall at five feet nine inches, Choudhury, 22, won the title beating 19 other contestants. “I was very very excited before the pageant. I had put my heart and soul into it. I knew that the day would never again come and I had no other option but to make sure that I perform. I am glad that my thought process worked,” Choudhury said. “I also knew that nervousness could land me in
trouble as I would have given wrong answers or would have fumbled. So, I had to keep calm and the person from whom I have learnt this is my father. He has taught me how to remain peaceful and calm in every situation,” she added. So what did she do to remain calm? “I was reciting prayers like Gayatri Mantra because it doesn’t distract your attention and helps in focusing,” she said. Has life changed after winning this crown? “Undoubtedly! Today everyone knows my name. No one was bothered about me till today. Even you are interviewing me because of my victory; so, yes, life has changed a lot for the better. The best thing is that all my dreams have come true,” Choudhury said. This Delhiite first dreamt of becoming a model when she saw model-turned-actress Sushmita Sen win the Miss Universe title in 1994. “That was the first time when I realised that I too want to be there in this profession. I have been modelling for the past two years but I wanted to get familiar with this industry and only after that I wanted to participate in a major event like this. The effort and planning has paid off,” she said. What next after this? “Now I want to win the Miss Universe title as I have raised a lot of expectations both for my family and my country. I just want to make everyone happy by bringing the crown back home. So preparations for that will start very soon,” she said. Any plans of switching to Bollywood? “It is too early to talk about this because right now my priority is to win the Miss Universe title. Acting is completely different from fashion and right now I do not have any such plans. Where things will take you, you never know,” she said.

Knot in trouble Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan has rubbished reports of his having split with wife Suzanne saying that he is having “a picnic” with her and their kids. A leading Mumbai tabloid reported that Hrithik and Suzanne have parted ways when she had moved to her parents’ house. “It is too funny! Yes, Suzanne shifted to her parents’ place with the kids two days ago and I was to join her on my return as there is a white ant treatment going on in my house and a section of my floor is being renovated. I’m with Suzanne right now having a picnic with my wife, kids and in-laws,” Hrithik said. Hrithik’s statement was released on Tuesday after the tabloid carried a major news item with the headline “Hrithik-Susanne split?”. The article suggested that the couple is heading for splitsville. The article said that trouble began to brew in their paradise after Hrithik started becoming cosy with his Kites co-star, Mexican actress Barbara Mori. But none of this is true. The actor’s spokesperson said, “It’s a circus... Just a sensational story and nothing else.” Hrithik and Suzanne had been dating each other long before they tied the nuptial knot in 2000. They have two sons - Hrehaan, four and Hridhaan who will celebrate his first birthday next month. — IANS |
Playing safe Those who want to see Sonam Kapoor and her dad Anil Kapoor together on screen will have to wait for a long time. The Delhi 6 girl thinks Kapoor senior looks far younger than his age to play a conventional father in a Bollywood
flick. The buzz around tinsel town is that there’s a pivotal role in Anil’s home production - of Sonam’s father - that he was supposed to play. But Anil is not doing the film titled Ayesha. “Do you really think he looks like my Dad? No! He doesn’t. He looks far younger than his age. And that’s why I wouldn’t want him to play my father. The role in Ayesha that you’re mentioning didn’t suit him. My dad can’t play the conventional father,” Sonam, who has acted in Saawariya and Delhi 6, said. Earlier, Anil had been offered a role in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6 with Sonam, but both father and daughter decided against it. In fact, Sonam was more against the idea of their coming together than Anil. “And that’s how it remains even now. I really feel we wouldn’t look like father and daughter on screen. We’d rather wait for a while until I’m older because my father isn’t going to oblige (by looking older),” said the 23-year-old actor. When pointed out that some of Anil’s leading ladies are about Sonam’s age, she said: “That’s right and my father looks very well-matched with all his co-stars. He’s quite something. And now after
Slumdog Millionaire he has entered another innings in his career.” —

Wrong moves Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and wife Twinkle Khanna may land in further trouble for their alleged obscene act on the ramp following the filing of a case against them in a local court. Advocate Virendra Kumar filed the case in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rajesh Kumar against the star couple’s performance during the promotional catwalk for a particular brand of jeans at a show. The court after recording the complainant’s statement, has scheduled April 13 for producing further evidence and hearing of the case.
