The district administration has decided to honour as many as 12 city residents from various walks of life for their significant contribution in the development of society. The awards — a medal and a certificate of merit — would be given in the field of health, education, administration and agriculture.

A “Shardhanjli Samaroh” was organised at St. Joseph's Convent School, Malpur Arkan, to commemorate the first death anniversary of the three tiny tots - Divya Saini, Jeevthesh Sharma and Divianshu Dubey, who were killed, when the school van collided with a truck near the Nijjar farm on January 25 last year. Besides, two children were seriously injured in the road accident.

R-Day: Tight security in place

In view of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s visit on Republic Day function in the holy city, the security has been beefed up with police parties have been put at vital places especially near Guru Nanak Stadium where the CM would unfurl the flag.

The security has also been tightened at Amritsar Railway Station, bus stand and Amritsar international airport where dog squads have been pressed into service. According to information, the visitors are not being allowed to enter in the international airport along with the passengers in view of the security measures.

Nakas have been put up at all entry and exit points of the city, which is searching every vehicle to avoid any untoward incident. Senior police officers were patrolling at various places in the city looking after the security arrangements.

Deputy Commissioner K S Pannu, SSP Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh and senior administration officials visited Guru Nanak Stadium to supervise the arrangements.

Jalandhar: The police has beefed up security in different cities and towns in the district in the wake of Republic Day celebrations.

Intelligence reports of terror threats to Jalandhar, along with cities like Ludhiana and Amritsar, has also acted as a catalyst for the police to be extra cautious.

Moreover, the recent Mumbai attacks have caused the police personnel to constantly be on their toes. Besides deploying additional police force in civil dress, the department has also laid traps at strategic points in the district.

Sources in the department disclosed that special teams, including dog-squads, have been pressed into service for frisking suspects at the bus stand, railway stations, malls, multiplexes, hospitals and other crowded places in the city and vicinity. The police has also alerted its informers.

Owners and managements of various hotels, restaurants, showrooms, shops and corporate houses have been asked to keep their CCTVs on round-the-clock and put their personal security guards on high alert.

PCR vehicles and fire engines have been kept ready for any untoward incident. Metal-detectors have been installed at the entry and exit points of various public places and important buildings.

Special security arrangements have been made around Guru Gobind Singh Stadium where Punjab Vidhan Sabha speaker, Nirmal Singh Kahlon will unfurl the tricolur. Jalandhar SSP PK Rai claimed that ‘standard security arrangements’ have been done.

Gurdaspur: The district police authorities sealed the border with militancy infested Jammu and Kashmir by setting up special check posts at various points to avoid entry of any anti-social element on the eve of Republic Day.

This has been done for the first time so that entry of any terrorist or other anti-national element could be stopped. The special police check points had also been set up alongside the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh border touching this district.

Apart from it, a number of spotters in 'mufti' have been deployed at various places to keep a watch on the movements of suspicious elements.

A senior police official said all the hotels, lodges and dharamshalas of this district had been searched. The policemen performing duties on public places including railway stations, bus stands, main crossing, bust eating points and markets had been alerted.

However, the officer said the police authorities had been finding it difficult to sanitise the whole border district due to acute shortage of policemen.

Honour for 12 residents

The district administration has decided to honour as many as 12 city residents from various walks of life for their significant contribution in the development of society. The awards — a medal and a certificate of merit — would be given in the field of health, education, administration and agriculture.

Among the awardees are Dr Kashmiri Lal and Dr Subhash Chander from the local civil hospital for their service to humanity, Inderjeet Singh and Paramjeet Singh from Homegaurd department, Manager of Seed Corporation, Paramjeet Singh in the field of agriculture.

Similarly there are head constable Surinder Pal, Anil Kumar and Ram Kishan from PAP headquarters, Jalandhar Cantonment, Principal of State Public School, Nakodar, A.S. Ryar for his effort to upgrade the standard of education . And three patwaris from Shahkot sub division for their relentless flood relief work.

Govt to construct bundhs in flood-hit areas

Mehatpur (Jalandhar), January 25
The state government has decided to construct temporary and permanent bundhs in all flood-affected areas before the rainy season commences.

The government has directed all the deputy commissioners of all the flood prone districts for mooting plans and access expenditure well in advance so the floods could be prevented in the coming rains.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on the second day of his sangat darshan programme, here today, said that pucca bundhs would be constructed at nine sensitive points on the Dhussi bundh embankments. The government has earmarked a sum of Rs 9.57 crore for the purpose.

He also claimed that the deep borewell would shortly be sunk for providing potable water to the population residing in the outskirts of different villages in the state for the last many years.

The government has also directed district education officers for preparing lists of the schools san boundary walls.

The government would also construct boundary walls of all schools.

A sum of Rs 7.57 crore would be spent on various development works and other projects to the taken up in Nurmehal assembly constituency and Rs 1.14 crore has been marked for various development works in Mehatpur, the CM added.

A “Shardhanjli Samaroh” was organised at St. Joseph's Convent School, Malpur Arkan, to commemorate the first death anniversary of the three tiny tots - Divya Saini, Jeevthesh Sharma and Divianshu Dubey, who were killed, when the school van collided with a truck near the Nijjar farm on January 25 last year. Besides, two children were seriously injured in the road accident.

The management, staff, students and parents paid tributes to the departed souls. Chaudhary Swarna Ram, social welfare minister, in his address on the Republic Day not only mourned the death of the tiny tots but had also announced Rs 1 lakh each for the killed and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.

But till now the affected parents had not received anything. Rakesh Chopra, father of Parteek Chopra, who was seriously injured in the school van accident, said he had appealed to the district administration several times, but in vain. He said he had very meagre sources of income and had taken a loan for the treatment of his son. Interestingly, Chaudhary Swarna Ram is again coming here to preside over the Republic Day function on Monday.
