Hyderabad, January 14 Resuming on 91 for three, UP batsmen, barring the notable exceptions of Shivakant Shukla (99) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (41), wilted in the face of some quality stuff from Zaheer and folded for 245 to concede a first innings lead of 157 runs. To make it worse for them, Mumbai, in their second essay, cruised to 130 for no loss at stumps with captain Wasim Jaffer (74) and Vinayak Samant (53) in the middle and the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma yet to come. Zaheer, arguably the most lethal bowler in international cricket at the moment, finished with an impressive figure of 27.2-14-54-7, his second successive five-for. Umpiring, however, remained a matter of concern and Shivakant Shukla today fell to a dubious leg before decision just one run away from a well-deserved ton and the dismissal triggered UP's batting collapse. Zaheer has troubled every world class batsman of late but to their credit, overnight batsmen Shukla and Parvinder Singh (22) negotiated him well. Parvinder sustained a painful blow from Zaheer on his forearm but still did not flinch. His patience, however, wore thin before lunch and Parvinder threw away his wicket chasing a wide Abhishek Nayar delivery. Shukla found an ally in Bhuvneshwar and the duo added 68 runs for the fifth wicket in no time before Zaheer, who so far had been troubling with reverse swing, hit back with the new ball. Zaheer wreaked havoc in his second spell with the second new ball, claiming five middle and lower order wickets for just 20 runs as UP, from 214 for four, were shot out for 245. The Indian spearhead started the rot when he ended Shukla's 393-minute vigil by trapping him leg before. Shukla was distinctly unlucky as the ball hit the flap of the pad well above the knee-roll and it was a sad end to his patient 266-ball knock which included 14 hits to the fence. Zaheer then went on to remove Praveen Kumar (6) and Amir Khan (0) off successive balls. Even though a hat-trick eluded him, Zaheer returned to remove Piyush Chawla (18) and Praveen Gupta (0), again in successive deliveries, in his next over to drop curtains on the UP innings. — PTI Scoreboard Mumbai (1st innings): 402 Uttar Pradesh (1st innings): (overnight 91-3): Srivastava c Samant b Zaheer 6 Shukla lbw b Zaheer 99 Raina run out (Bahutule) 0 Kaif c Samant b Zaheer 33 Parvinder c Samant b Nayar 22 B Kumar c sub (SO Kukreja) b Agarkar 41 Chawla c Kulkarni b Zaheer 18 P Kumar c Samant b Zaheer 6 Amir Khan c Samant b Zaheer 0 RP Singh not out 4 P Gupta c Powar b Zaheer 0 Extras: (lb-3, w-1, nb-12): 16 Total (all out in 100.2 overs): 245 Fall of wickets: 1-6, 2-6, 3-91, 4-146, 5-214, 6-218, 7-239, 8-239, 9-245, 10-245. I was in hurry to wrap up innings: Zaheer
Hyderabad, January 14 Used to bowling mostly in shirtfronts, Zaheer was elated with the way the track at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium responded and said, "It's a good track to bowl on. It was good that I got the ball in the right areas."
Zaheer's lethal second spell with the second new ball saw him scalping five crucial wickets for just 20 runs and the pacer said he was in a hurry to wrap things up before weariness crept in. "It has been a long day for us. I was definitely getting tired, just wanted to get over it quickly. I am glad that I got those wickets quickly in that spell," he told reporters after the end of third day's
play. Zaheer said shooting out UP for 245 was not easy as long as Shivakant Shukla (99) was in the middle. "I don't think it was a cakewalk for us. Shivakant was batting well. It was a good competition. This wicket was helpful to the bowlers and that was an advantage for us," he said. Despite their upper hand in the match, Zaheer warned against complacency and said Mumbai would have to maintain the intensity. Replying to a query, Zaheer said Sachin Tendulkar was feeling feverish due to which he could not come on to the field
today. "Sachin is struggling with fever. He is a bit low," he said.
Zaheer has been in stellar form throughout the 2008-9 season and his injury woes are also now a thing of past.

Hasan sparkles as B’desh stun Sri Lanka
Dhaka, January 14 The left-hander cracked two sixes and 10 fours in his 69-ball knock as Bangladesh surpassed Sri Lanka's total of 147 with 7.1 overs to spare in a match reduced by fog to 31 overs a side. The hosts will clash with Sri Lanka again in Friday's final after both teams finished their league engagements with five points apiece, including a bonus point, with a win each. Zimbabwe, who also won one match, ended with four points. It was only the second win by Bangladesh over Sri Lanka in 25 one-day internationals. ‘Hayden redefined role of opener’
Melbourne, January 14 As Phil Jaques and Phillip Hughes would fight for Hayden's Test spot, Australian cricket legends were concerned that the void, created by the burly Queenslander's retirement, would be too big to fill. Former Australian captain Steve Waugh, who was a key mentor through Hayden's career, claimed the opener was so good that it was often embarrassing to bat at the other end. ''The great thing about Matthew Hayden was he redefined what an opening batsman was and he changed the face of Test match batting forever,'' Waugh said. ''His real legacy will be changing the way cricket was played. ''He always tried to dominate and went after the opening bowlers in the first session. ''He was so good it was sometimes embarrassing to bat at the other end. Once, when he got a century on a difficult pitch in Johannesburg (in 2002), I told him, 'Mate, you are so good this is embarrassing','' Waugh added. Former pacer Glen McGrath believes it would be a very difficult task to fill Hayden's place in the Australian ranks. ''It's hard to replace him because guys like him, they are invaluable. You can't fill that experience for years,'' McGrath said. Legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne claimed Hayden's intimidating style would be sorely missed and said the Australian team, which has suffered following the retirements of some of the greats, would be further weakened after the opener's departure. ''He had an aura about him when he went out to bat,'' Warne said. ''The thing that will be missed is his aura around the side with the young players in there now. It's another player gone that will be very hard to replace,'' he conceded. — UNI |
Banga, Dalbir academy in last eight
Nabha, January 14 The high flying lads of Dalbir academy once again showed great temperament in beating JCT academy, Phagwara 1-0. The Banga college team started the proceedings on the right track with Atinder Mani scoring in the opening minutes of the contest. The winners were actually slated to play strong contenders J&K Bank who, however, cried foul at the eleventh hour. The harried organisers were left with no option but to field the Sunam team, a relative weakling, in place of the Jammu bank men. The Banga college boys could have gone up by two goals had striker Kulvir Singh not missed a sitter in front of an open net. After doing all the hard work and deftly pulling the Sunam goal tender out of his position, Kulvir made a hash of a golden chance to score. Kulvir was once again the villain when in the second half he floundered a sure shot chance to score. After doing all the groundwork yet once again, Kulvir misjudged the angle of his shot only to see the ball sailing past the vertical post out of harms way. The college boys did well to hold up an assault on their citadel in the last minute and sailed into the last eight stage with a solitary-goal win. For Dalbir academy, skipper Harpreet Singh once again stole the limelight and was declared the man of the match as the Patiala outfit stormed into the quarterfinals by registering a 1-0 verdict against JCT academy, Phagwara. |
India colts beat Aussies, eves lose to UK
Sydney, January 14 However, it was a contrasting result for the Indian girls team as it went down 1-3 to Great Britain. The Indian colts, under coach A K Bansal started from where they had left off in Argentina and put the hosts under pressure from the word go. Expectedly, the strong start soon materialised into a lead, with Antil finding the net in the 11th minute through a beautifully worked out field goal. Centre-half Vivek and Amir Khan worked in tandem on the right side of the midfield to set up the goal for Antil who committed no mistake in sounding the board. The Indian forwards and midfielders' seamless movement soon resulted in a 2-0 lead when captain Ram converted a penalty corner in the 25th minute, driving to the right of the Australian goalkeeper. Australia had a series of chances in the dying minutes of the first half earning three short corners in the space of six minutes, but India custodian Mrinal Chaubey stood like a rock. Australia, starting the second half with a two-goal deficit, tried hard to break the Indian defence but were caught on the wrong foot by the pace of the Indian forwards and midfielders. The hosts did manage to pull one back in the 66th minute when Tristan White scored off a short corner to make it 2-1. Australia had a wonderful opportunity to level the scores in the final minutes of the match but the Indian defence was upto the task.

PCA welfare scheme for retired cricketers
Chandigarh, January 14 Announcing the scheme PCA secretary M P Pandove said that the beneficiaries would be those retired players who were left out of the cover of the BCCI platinum Jubilee gratis scheme floated in 2006. The PCA scheme would cover those cricketers who had played between 10 and 24 first class cricket matches as those who had played 25 or more matches were covered under the BCCI scheme which provided monthly gratis of between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000, Pandove who is also BCCI joint secretary said. Pandove said that under the PCA scheme the players would get a minimum monthly gratis of Rs 5,000 and thereafter on prorate basis up to 24 matches. For each additional match the player would get a monthly hike of Rs 300, he said adding the scheme would benefit 24 state players who had played first class matches. Cricketers of yester years , including off spinner Som Parkash Anand, Ganesh Lal, openers Ravinder Khurana, Ashok Khanna and Sawaranjit Singh Butt would benefit from the PCA scheme, he said adding that PCA was the first state cricket association to moot such a welfare scheme for retired first class cricketers. Pandove said that PCA in fact had earlier implemented a scheme of monthly honorarium of Rs.5,000/- for current first class players, who are not having any job.

India go down 1-2 to HK
Hong Kong, Jan 14 In a closely fought match, all the three goals were scored in the last 20 minutes. Midfielder Yiu Chung Au Yeung opened scoring for the home side in the 70th minute before India captain Bhaichung Bhutia made it 1-1 10 minutes later. But in the end, it was the home team which had the last laugh with defender Ng Wai Chiu finding the target in the 90th minute to seal the victory. The result is a huge disappointment for India, considering that Hong Kong are 10 places below them at 152 and Bob Houghton's boys have already made it to the 2011 Asian Cup after winning the AFC Challenge Cup in August last.

Punjab riders dominate
Patiala, January 14 The host’s quartet of Amrit Singh, Shahbaaz Singh, Karanvir Singh and Gurpal Singh rode a tactically brilliant race to win the 1500m team time trial for boys (u-17). In the under-19 age group for boys, Punjab foursome of Narpinderjit Singh, Kiran Inder Singh, Suhab Partap Singh and Amrit Singh dominated the proceedings in the 1500m team time trial by standing first. Maharashtra and Manipur were placed second and third, respectively. If Punjab boys’ domination was complete, their women riders came up with a dismal display in the 1500m team time trial. The event was won by Manipur eves with embarrassing ease with the foursome of Rameshwari Devi, Helen Devi, N.Chaoba Devi and Renubala Devi bagging the gold. Punjab were placed second, while Kerala took the third spot. Railways left their mark in the 1500m team time trial for men with R.Bishnoi, K.Probin Singh, Rakesh Kumar and Abhishek Rana, a former student of Punjabi University, garnering gold.
