Jor Mela Asked to vacate rooms in gurdwara to accommodate jathedars Gurdeep Singh Mann Tribune News Service
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 24 The players were allegedly thrown out of the gurdwara rooms in the wee hours of today and they had to spend some time in the in biting cold outside the gurdwara before they were shifted to Mata Gujri College. The organisers were caught in a piquant situation when they had to run from pillar to post to accommodate 20 players, including the captain, coach and manager of the team. The team members said the team decided to start a day earlier for Fatehgarh Sahib. “We did not want to be caught in bad weather and decided to reach the place a day before," said one of the players. They said that the problem arises in area where there is shortage of hotels and rented rooms are occupied during the Jor Mela. There are a few places where the teams or other government guests could stay in Fatehgarh Sahib. The organisers take the services of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Mata Gujri College or Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib to provide lodging to players and other guests. But due to the large number of devotees reaching city to pay obeisance during the Jor Mela, the problem persists. "Since there is hardly any hotel or lounge in the city to accommodate a large number of people, it is only the rooms of the gurdwara and colleges where one could stay. But we were still unable to find a suitable accommodation,” rued the players. They added that the rooms are made available at these places only for those who have high political connections and not for the players and other people. Today morning, some people from gurdwara approached the team members lodging in rooms and asked them to vacate rooms for jathedars. "We tried to tell them that we were national players, but they did not hear us. At last, we had to vacate the rooms and were shifted to Mata Gujri College," added another player. Players said that they decided not to raise hue and cry as it was a religious function. "Moreover, we are no cricket players to be given a luxurious stay," added another player. |

HC: Don’t park vehicles on Zirakpur-Derabassi road
Chandigarh, December 24 The court also wants Mohali and Panchkula Deputy Commissioners to resolve the issues in this regard. As the traffic regulation and highway widening case came up for hearing, the Division Bench of Justice, Uma Nath Singh, and Justice Daya Chaudhary asked the state council to bring it to the notice of the Director-General of Police the direction that “no vehicle shall stop on the highway except at the bus stops or in case of emergency on the side of the Zirakpur-Derabassi road”. “He shall ensure the deployment of sufficient police force in compliance of our order. In case of non-compliance, the state DGP shall be proceeded against”. Earlier during proceedings, the Haryana state council said the issues brought to the fore by the NHAI would be solved before the next date of hearing i.e. January 12. The NHAI, in its affidavit, had stated there were a number of unauthorised accesses by private property owners, petrol pumps and road side squatters. These were creating a hindrance in the smooth flow of traffic, as well as endangering the safety of the highway commuters. In an attempt to substantiate the contention, a reference was made to a report carried in these columns on December 23. The NHAI added the highway administrator had issued notices under the Control of National Highway (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, for using unauthorised accesses to the national highway. It was claimed that NHAI was proposing diversion of light traffic through Sector 19, Industrial Area, Panchkula. The High Court had earlier made it clear that the project to streamline the flow of traffic on Pinjore-Kalka-Parwanoo road could not be delayed on account of red tape. The road has been witnessing traffic jams, especially, on the stretch passing through the towns of Pinjore and Kalka. The Bench has all along been expressing its concern over the red-tapism enveloping the issue of transfer of defence land between Chandigarh and Pinjore to the NHAI, and also on the issue of an alternative land to be provided to the Army authorities by Haryana in exchange for the land to be transferred to the NHAI. |
