Shops burgled:
Four commercial establishments, including a liquor shop and medical practitioner's clinic were burgled by the miscreants last night who dared to break open shutters and decamped with valuables and currency, complaints made to the local police on  Thursday said.

Photo exhibition:
The local Photojournalists Association is organising a photo exhibition titled “Camera Di Akh Cho” at the Teachers’ Home here on December 14 and 15 for the photographers of local print media. The information was given by the president of the association, Shamsher Singh Dhillon. 

Appointed: Engineer Kailash Kumar Goyal has taken over as the chief engineer of the Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant here on Tuesday. He takes over from R.K. Sharma, who retired on November 30. Goyal had been working at different positions in PSEB for about 32 years.

MC gets fogging machine:
The Vedanta Group of Industries gifted a fogging machine worth nearly Rs 8 lakh to Municipal Council, Mansa, on Wednesday. The machine would help the Municipal Council in its anti-malaria campaign. It may be mentioned that the group of industries is establishing a thermal plant near Talwandi Sabo, the construction work of which was launched with much fanfare by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal followed by a rally. The gesture of the industrial group was lauded. The Deputy Commissioner praised the group for gifting the fogging machine. Officials of the group said that they would continue their social welfare activities in the area.

Elected:
The Indian Institute of Architects, Mumbai, has elected Hem Raj Yadav, serving as architect, HUDA, as vice-chairman of its Haryana Chapter for a two-year term beginning from 2008. Yadav said he would endeavour to make Panchkula a major hub of all activities in a very short period and would take it ahead of Chandigarh. 

Freedom fighters’ pension up: The Haryana government has enhanced the Samman Pension of freedom fighters and their widows belonging to the state from Rs 5,125 to Rs 5,500 per month with effect from December 3.

JHAJJAR
Youth killed in accident:
A youth was killed and eight others were injured in road accidents in the district on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Arun, a resident of Ghumenhera town. The incident took place following a head-on collision between a Tata Sumo, carrying six persons, and a motorcycle on the Jhajjar-Beri road here on Wednesday. In another incident, two persons were injured when the truck they were travelling in was hit by another truck on the Jhajjar-Rohtak road near Guda village here on Wednesday. The police rushed to the spot and took the injured to the PGIMS, Rohtak.

3 receive burn injuries:
A woman and her 12-year-old daughter sustained serious burn injuries due to bursting of stove in Mangat Colony here on Thursday. Volunteers of an NGO, Jan Jagriti, admitted Raj Kali and her daughter Kajal to the trauma centre at the local Civil Hospital. Both the victims received more than 90 per cent burn injuries. In another incident, Lakhvinder, a resident of Manikpur Gharaunda, sustained serious burn injuries when the room in which was sleeping caught fire due to burning of a matchstick thrown by him. He was rushed to the trauma centre by his brother, Kulwant Joga, with almost 100 per cent burn injuries. Lakhvinder was reportedly under the influence of liquor when the tragedy took place.

Man electrocuted: Shamsher Singh (27) was electrocuted while digging a bore for installing a hand pump at SP Colony in Foosgarh. The mishap took place when the boring instrument slipped from his hand and touched the live electricity transmission lines, police sources said. Two other persons, Sat Pal and Rajinder, who were working with him, were injured and rushed to a hospital.

Varsity lecturer to attend workshop in Belgium:
Dr Rani Devi, faculty member of the department of energy and environment sciences of Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa, has been invited to attend a cost exploratory workshop on the energy water nexus managing the links between energy and water for a sustainable future by the European Cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research to be held in Belgium from January 19 to 21. An official spokesman for the university said earlier also she was selected for European Commission project in Netherlands in 2003 while pursuing her PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. She had also been appointed as the visiting faculty by the Scientific Council of the Picardie Jules Verne University, France, he added.

Lawyers protest:
Consequent upon the statewide call for agitation, members of the district bar association on Thursday abstained from court work to register their protest about the misbehavior with the lawyers at Mandi recently. The bar association sought a probe into the incident and demanded stringent punitive action against those found guilty.

BILASPUR
Parents worried:
Parents of 43 students studying in five classes of Government Primary School at Kothi in gram panchayat Deoth near here are a worried lot as there is only one teacher posted at the school where he has to teach all these five classes. Led by former panchayat president Premlal Sharma and other villagers told mediapersons that the annual examinations were drawing nearer and the single teacher was busy in other jobs as well like preparation of the mid-day meal and his administrative duties. 

CFL bulbs: Distribution of CFL (compact fluorescent lights ) has not started here in the district though the power board had declared here earlier that this distribution would start on November 23 and would be completed by December 25. People here had been anxiously waiting for this free bounty as it was to their double benefit of reducing their monthly power bill without reducing their lighting capacity and 18 months’ guarantee of replacement of these lights. Superintending Engineer (Operations )D. S. Jamwal said here on on Thursday that this supply was expected any time now and the distribution would be started by Monday.

Pensioners’ meet:
The state pensioners’ welfare association will hold a state-level conference of pensioners on December 12 at Una. A spokesperson of the association Hari Chand Gupta said that the pensioners aged above 80 years would be honoured during the conference by chief guest Chief Minister P.K.Dhumal.

Demand for Urdu academy:
the Rasa Javedani Memorial Literary Society (RJMLS) has again demanded an Urdu academy in the state. At a general body meeting of the society, which was chaired by its president Prof Shohab Inayat Malik, its members resented that despite promises made by the successive state governments nothing had been done in this regard. They demanded that the language during the Dogra regime be restored to Urdu as it was still the official language of the state.

DEHRADUN

5 killed in road accident: Five persons were killed while six others were injured after a jeep fell into a gorge near Meena Bazaar, Kotwali, Pitthoragarh, here on Wednesday evening. According to officials of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre, a Marshal jeep bearing registration number UA 05 5404 was on it way from Haldwani to Pitthoragarh. The injured have been admitted to Pitthoragarh Hospital. The state CM has expressed grief over the incident and ordered a magisterial probe. He has also directed the government authorities to provide monetary compensation to the victims according to government policy.
