Scholarships for SC, ST students
Patiala, December 7 The institute director Dr. Pardeep Malhotra said the institute was inaugurated last week by Thapar University director K.K. Raina and was dedicated to provide best education services to all sections of the society irrespective financial status. “Our focus is particularly on those students, who cannot take coaching for some reasons. The fee structure of the institute has been designed to cater to the students from all financial backgrounds. Moreover, we are not compromising on the technology as we are effectively using latest technology like multi-media projectors as an education tool so as they could understand things in a better manner,” said Dr. Malhotra. He said scholarship would be given to brilliant scheduled caste (SC) and schedul tribe (ST) students. |

Family planning camp extended
Patiala, December 7 The associate professor, Dr S P Singh, Post Partum Unit, and senior nodal officer said here today that as per the policy of the Punjab government, those who opted for female lapro tubectomy and were below the poverty line would be given Rs 600, similarly, the male opting for non-scalpel vasectomy would be given Rs 1100, irrespective of their family status. Dr Singh further said the persons undergoing sterilisation operations were being given incentives in the form of a set of utensils in addition to the monetory benefits given by the state government. The lapro tubectomy and non-scalped vasectomy operations were being conducted by well-qualified and experienced doctors of the Post Partum Unit of Rajindra Hospital, under the guidance of Dr S K Bajwa, Dr Parneet Kaur and Dr Sarbarinder Kaur. S P said the medicines were being provided free of cost to the patients. Motivators were also rewarded by giving incentive of Rs 150 for tubectomy and Rs 200 for vasectomy per case. |

Dr Kapoor principal of dental college
Patiala, December 7 A fellow of the International Association of Oral and Maxofacial Surgeon and Indian Board of Oral and Maxofacial Surgeons, Dr
Kapoor, was the former head of the oral and maxofacial surgery department of both the Punjab Government Dental College,
Amritsar, and Patiala. He is credited with having published over 50 scientific papers in international and national conferences. He is the author of a text book of oral and maxofacial surgery. Dr Kapoor has done an advanced training in use of cutting laser, dental implants in France, and advanced AO course in India. He is a former senator of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences and an examiner in oral and maxofacial surgery with over 12 universities in the country. Immediately, after taking the charge of his new assignment, Dr Kapoor had a round of the dental college and hospital and interacted with senior faculty and students. |

Patiala, December 7 A.C Varma, managing director, the State Bank of Patiala, appreciated the efforts made by Karminder Singh, secretary of the society, for the welfare of the handicapped. On the occasion, the bank has donated a cheque of Rs 3.36 lakh for the furniture of the new building for the school of deaf and dumb and blind run by the society. R. D. Security tightened for Jor Mela
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 7 The mela would begin from December 24 and conclude with nagar kirtan from gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib to gurdwara Jyoti Swarup. The preparations for the festival are going on for the past few days, wherein, special arrangements for devotees and stages for political rallies have been set up near gurdwaras. Sons of Guru Gobind Singh were buried alive inside a brick wall here by Mughals 304 years back. Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Dr Kaustubh Sharma said 350 police officials from the district and around 1400 cops would be deployed at the mela. He revealed the parking areas would be set up outside venues of rally and special barricades and nakas would be set up besides CCTV cameras. Sharma pointed out that a special exercise by the Punjab police had been completed recently, wherein, photographs of thieves, robbers and other criminals were collected. Their posters would be put on display for the first time in the festival for identification. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has been arranging deewan, where the Sikh preachers, ragis, dhadi jathas will present devotional songs and give the accounts of the Sikh history. The district administration will ensure that wine shops would remain closed for three days. The educational institutions adjoining gurudwaras will also remain closed for three days, in view of the mela. The mela would begin with Akhand Path of Guru Granth Sahib at gurdwara Jyoti Swarup. A number of devotees are expected to pay obeisance at gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib and Jyoti Swarup and meetings would be held by various political parties next day. |

Ambala, December 7 Dr Sudhir Mehta, HOD plastic surgery department, Gyan Sagar Medical College at Banur said it was believed that the face of a person could only be beautified through plastic surgery but in fact the minor deformation of any part of the body could be normalised through it. He informed that a plastic surgery centre would soon be started in Ambala City. Dr Mahesh Manocha, an eye surgeon in Ambala said a doctor should be careful while attending the patient with eye diseases. He said a number of new technologies had been introduced in the field of eye surgery and they should be aware of it. Dr Deepti Manocha, Dr Kapil Vohra also spoke on this occasion. |

Man arrested with 48 kg poppy husk
Chandigarh, December 7 The driver, identified as Naveen Dikshit of Muzafarnagar, has been arrested and a case under Section 15 of the NDPS Act registered against him. He was later produced in a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody. 3 held for picking pocket

Vehicles stolen
Naveen Goyal of Sector 21 has reported to the police that his Hyundai Verna car was stolen from his house on December 5. In another incident, Roshan Lal of Sector 37 reported that his motorcycle was stolen from his house on the same day. Two cases of theft have been registered.

Kunal Rana of Sector 37 has reported that a stereo was stolen from his car that was parked at the IT park yesterday. A case has been registered in this regard.
House burgled
Lakhbir Kaur of Sector 20-C has told the police that some gold jewellery and other articles were stolen from her house between December 1 and 6. A case has been registered.
Assaulted
Navjot Singh of Sector 34 has complained to the police that Harpreet Singh Cheema and his father, Harjinder Singh, residents of Model Town, Ludhiana, allegedly thrashed him near the press lights on Saturday evening. The accused have been arrested. The police today seized half kilogram of smack from two Saharanpur residents. The two suspects were bringing the contraband for selling it to local contacts. Mehtab Gulbahar and Gurdeep Singh are reported to have been in the business for the past few months. The duo was arrested with the contraband behind the Phase 8 building of the Punjab School Education Board here. A police official said more recoveries were likely to be made from the suspects after their interrogation. More arrests were also likely to be made in the coming days.
Man dies in accident
An unidentified man died in a hit and run case at Zirakpur last night. Believes to be around 35 years of age, the victim was found dead along a road. A police official said it seemed that a vehicle hit him. The body has been sent for post mortem to the civil hospital.
Worker suffers burn injuries
Vinod, an employee working at Happy chicken corner in Phase 7 market suffered 35 per cent burns while he was working in the shop. Due to a gas leakage, the room where he was cooking caught fire. He was taken to a local hospital for medication. The victim suffered burn injuries on his hands and face. |

Mohali, December 7 According to the police, Swaranjit Kaur alleged that around 8.15 pm on Thursday she was coming back home when a Maruti car came in front of her and a youth came out with a sharp edged weapon and threatened her to stab her. The accused snatched her purse containing Rs 60,000 and fled from the scene. The police has registered the case and started further investigation. |

7-year-old city lad sets record
Chandigarh, December 7 The seven-year-old took the tough greens in his stride and emerged the winner defeating Lakshya Loomba of Bangalore by a big margin of 35 strokes. Played on the Golden Greens on December 4 and 5, the tournament was divided into five categories’, A to E. Playing nine holes on each day the junior golfers from all over the country had a trying time playing in the high winds and narrow tough course. On the first day Aadil started with a hat trick of bogeys in the first three holes. He dropped another stroke on the fifth before double-bogeying the ninth for a six over par 42. The second day began with Aadil sinking birdies on the first and third. But this excitement was short-lived as he dropped for strokes conceding a quadruple bogey on the fourth. Two more bogeys on the sixth and eighth saw Aadil playing a four over par 40 for a tally of 10 over par 82. His performance fetched him a Taylor-made golf set and a certificate of merit. For seven-year-old Aadil the Gurgaon win is not a fluke. He has won virtually all Albatross tournaments. In August he clinched the title at the Qutab golf course, Delhi. He followed it up with repeat wins in Chandigarh and Jaipur in September and October, respectively, before the record-breaking feat at the Golden Greens in Gurgaon. Aadil is also doing well on the Indian golf junior circuit having finished fifth and fourth in the championships held in Chandigarh and Jaipur, respectively. In the IGU tournaments the seven-year-old is pitted against under-11 competitors. He will proceed to Kolkata to play two IGU matches at Tollygung and RCG, Kolkata. Coach Jessie Grewal has high hopes on Aadil, who spends an entire day with him once a week at the CGA golf range. Aadil's performance has not got unnoticed. A company from West Asia, Abdul Rehman Air-conditioners, Kuwait, has come forward to sponsor golf items worth Rs 75,000 every year for the next three years. CGA president C.S.R. Reddy has announced advanced golf training for Aadil to hone his skills. Aadil was happy about his latest performance. His coach had helped him to come down from a 25-over performance to a record 10-over at Gurgaon. |
Chhattisgarh emerge overall champs
Chandigarh, December 7 Madhya Pradesh finished second with 198 points while Kerala was declared third with 164 points. In the course, Chattisgarh won 31 gold, 14 silver and 16 bronze medals while MP collected 17 gold, 21 silver and 16 bronze medals. The concluding day witnessed a grand closing ceremony with handing over the games flag to the department of forests, West Bengal, which would host the 18th All-India Forest Games and Sports Meet next year. More than 2,000 sportspersons from the forest department, forest corporations and forestry institutions from different states participated in all 137 game events. Speaking on the occasion, Tikshan Sud, forest minister, Punjab, stressed the need to organise more such events, which are helpful in cementing the bond of brotherhood and sportsmanship in the people across the country. He also thanked all participants for showing complete discipline during the games. Dr R.C. Sobti, vice-chancellor, Panjab University, presided over the function.
