Wahid to make Markfed more farmer friendly
Patiala, November 15 Wahid, head of the Phagwara-based Wahid Sugar Mill and a close confidante of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, was the first SAD leader who has been nominated as chairman of a big organisation like Markfed by the Chief Minister. He was one of those close aides of Badal who were allegedly subjected to “mental torture and harassment” by the then Vigilance Bureau top brass at the instance of former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. “My first priority will be to give a new look to the organisation. I am going to concentrate on raising exports of Markfed products, which are very popular among NRIs and foreigners abroad. All we need to do is to repackage it as per requirements of the changing times,” said Wahid, while talking to The Tribune. Wahid said though Markfed was already working at ground level with farmers, his effort would be to strike a new rapport between farmers and Markfed. “I will see how farmers’ development could be ensured at an optimum level and help those farmers, who are facing a number of problems, like marketing of their agricultural produce,” said Wahid. |

Association secy-gen accused of fraud
Patiala, November 15 While the university is celebrating the success of the sports department that won Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy for the first time, no one knows the victory did not come that easy. The decision of association secretary-general Dayanand Dongaonkar, who is the chairman of the MAKA Trophy Committee, would have snubbed Punjabi University’s chances of winning the trophy this year, had the sports ministry not interfered in this regard. Favouring other universities, he allegedly went against rules and deducted the marks of Punjabi University, Patiala, but the university managed to win after the ministry’s intervention. Last year also, Dongaonkar had allegedly de-recognised the Punjabi University’s tournament. The university then moved to the Delhi High Court and won the case against the association but still no action had been taken against the erring official. It is interesting to note that in the sports committees, be it Arjuna Award Committee, Dronacharya Committe etc, the technical persons head the committee, whereas for MAKA trophy, Dongaonkar is the one who has never had a sports background ever. Not only this, there have been various complaints against Dongaonkar that he is involved in plagiarism, fraudulent expenses etc. Inspite of the investigation, the association has not taken any action in this regard. |

HC breather for Tahar Singh
Chandigarh, November 15 The bench ruled that at the current stage no useful purpose would be served by going into the legality or the propriety of the order dated July 23, 2007. The judges held the order did not amount to any decision that the advocate was suffering from any mental incapability. The judges passed the order after taking into consideration the fact that the divorce case, and the issue of FIR registered by his wife, stood resolved. The division bench had taken up the matter soon after the passing of the initial directions. It had ruled that the single judge’s order shall not be implemented to the extent that Tahar Singh shall now not be taken to Agra. Also, if his custody was not required under the FIR registered by the Chandigarh police on the complaint by his wife, his custody be given to R.S. Cheema, senior advocate, who shall ensure that he stayed with him without visiting his house. The order by the single judge had followed suo motu notice of an FIR lodged by Tahar Singh’s wife with the Chandigarh police wherein she had alleged torture by her husband, which had sent their children into depression. The single judge had observed that in view of the serious allegations of torture by the lawyer’s wife and children, it appeared that only a barbaric or insane person could indulge in such a violent conduct. Even the Chandigarh police drew an adverse remark from the judge, who stated in his order that the police appeared to be playing “soft” in the case and asked it to hand over the case to the CBI. The police has recorded offences under Sections 498-A and 506, IPC, following the complaint lodged by Tahar’s wife. She had alleged in the complaint that Tahar had thrown her into a river and asked her to swim. Apart from this, there was routine torture and thrashings, which negatively affected her and the children’s state of mind. The judge also reflected upon the conduct of Tahar Singh in the Bar and stated that the accused created nuisance and commotion wherever he went, aided and abetted by some anti-social elements, “on the strength of some vested interests, who finance him in doing so”. |
