Case against controversial lawyer withdrawn
Swati Sharma
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 1
Tahar Singh, the controversial lawyer, who virtually took on the judiciary by launching a campaign for discussing the conduct of Punjab and Haryana High Court judges, was recently let off in a domestic violence case, which had taken a curious turn following his face off with the judges. The case against him was dropped about a week ago after his wife withdrew the charges levelled against him.

Tahar’s case had hit the headlines in July 2007 after Justice Uma Nath Singh of the Punjab and Haryana High Court took suo motto notice of an FIR registered against him by his wife and nearly sent him to a mental asylum in Agra. The court’s order, which was viewed by many as fallout of his outspokenness against the judiciary, pitted the lawyers against the judges with the former backing Tahar and going to the extent of preventing him from being lodged in the asylum. Even the CBI team was, midway, asked to return along with him.

Almost after a one-and-half year of legal wrangling, Tahar can now heave a sigh of relief as his wife, who had accused him of domestic violence, withdrew her complaint, leading the police to file a cancellation report for the FIR registered against him. The court, in it’s order, accepted the FIR’s cancellation and quashed the same after Tahara’s wife gave a statement in the court on October 23, 2008, that her dispute had been settled amicably and she did not want to pursue the charges.

When contacted advocate Tahar Singh said, “I am happy to be with my wife and children. These ups and downs are a part of life.”

Sandeep Rana
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, November 1
The weekend provided some respite to the ongoing Twenty-20 tournament of the nascent Indian Cricket League’s (ICL) season-2 as the crowd started pouring in here today at the Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium in Sector 3.

Though the average number of people couldn’t bring the zing to the ICL but comparatively yesterday it showed good signs to the organisers of the ICL for the coming matches in the city.

The second day that saw the Delhi Giants taking on Hyderabad Heroes had a good crowd in the starting but as the innings progressed it continued to disappear. “It’s Saturday today that’s why I have come otherwise, I can’t stay here till late at night for the match,” said a spectator.

About slowness of the pitch that hasn’t yielded many runs, as expected earlier, in the matches played till now, the organizers opined that the players needed to be sympathised with.

“Let us not be uncharitable to them. They are still young. We need to wait till they become heroes. The ICL is trying,” said Zee Entertainment official, who was busy, apparently counting his sponsors.

“Even on the weekend and a holiday tomorrow, we have flown in two more sponsors. That speaks for people’s faith in our venture,” he stated.
