Gilly calls up Sachin, clarifies
New Delhi, October 24 ''Gilchrist called me up and clarified the whole matter,'' Tendulkar told Times Now in Pune. ''He said his comments have been taken out of context,'' he said while refusing to comment any further on the issue. The former Australian vice-captain had said that Tendulkar first told the hearing that he could not hear anything that happened between Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh. But he added that Tendulkar later came to say that he did hear Harbhajan saying something to Symonds in Hindi which sounded like ''Monkey''. Gilchrist also assured the batting maestro that he will soon issue a clarification on this issue. Gilchrist had called Sachin Tendulkar with names like a ''liar'', ''dishonest'', ''sore loser'' and a ''bad sport'' in his soon-to-be published autobiography ''True Colors of My Life''. He had also written about Tendulkar in his autobiography that, ''it was hard to find for a changing room handshake after we have beaten India.'' Meanwhile, Australian opener Matthew Hayden, when reminded about Gilchrist's comments, said all the players from India and Australia have moved on from the acrimonious Sydney Test and the two teams share a great rapport between themselves. ''I every one has moved on from that episode and so far the two teams have played the two Tests with great spirits,'' he told mediapersons here last night. Hayden, who had once described Harbhajan Singh as an ''obnoxious little weed'', said he was impressed with the Indian off-spinner and has great regards for him now. ''He is star especially with the way he has come back and played the whole series with such high spirits. ''In fact he has been playing well too. It has been very difficult to play him so far in the series,'' he added. The BCCI finance committee chairman Rajiv Shukla also took a dig at Gilchrist and said the former Australian batsman should have thought at least twice before saying something against a player of Tendulkar's stature. — UNI
A marketing
strategy: Vengsarkar
Former Indian Chief Selector Dilip Vengsarkar described Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist's remarks on Sachin Tendulkar's honesty in his autobiography as just a "marketing strategy".
"You have to write something sensational to sell a book," Vengsarkar said. "I think it's a marketing strategy that Adam Gilchrist has adopted. Very unfortunate, but a fact," the former Indian captain told a private TV Channel. Rajiv Shukla, Chairman of the BCCI Finance Committee, also took strong objection to Gilchrist's comments on Tendulkar, saying the remarks were uncalled for. "I think Mr Adam Gilchrist should think twice before making any observation about Mr (Sachin) Tendulkar," Shukla said. "He is widely respected and now the kind of reputation he commands throughout the world, I don't think he will stoop to this level. "So the observations made by Mr Gilchrist are uncalled for and I don't think he should comment on a person like Tendulkar in this language. I think it is better to ignore his remarks," he said. Doing it for his book: Shah
Mumbai: Former Cricket Board secretary Niranjan Shah hit back at retired Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist by accusing the wicket keeper-batsman of sensationalising the incidents during the ill-tempered Sydney Test against India in his soon-to-be-released autobiography. "He wants to sensationalise the incidents to sell his book. As everyone knows everything was properly handled by the authorities with the appointment of proper men to conduct the hearing after a proper procedure was put in place," said Shah who was the secretary of the BCCI during that period in January. "It was like a court hearing and the matter was settled properly. Everything was fine. After the matter is over, to claim these things in the book is nothing but foolishness," he added. Shah was alluding to the hearing of Harbhajan Singh's appeal against the decision of ICC match referee Mike Procter who found the Indian off-spinner guilty of racially abusing Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds. A retired New Zealand judge then heard Harbhajan's appeal. |
Lahore, October 24 A PCB spokesman today said the former Australian Test pacer's contract has been terminated, while Altaf will now function as director-general of the board with the additional powers of chief operating officer. ''The Chairman decided to release Lawson and Naghmi,'' the spokesman said and added that Lawson has been informed about the decision. Lawson was hired after the former Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was found dead during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. His two year contract was due to end in 2009. Earlier, the PCB Chairman Ejaz Butt had said Lawson was ''useless'' but the Australian will be allowed to complete his contract.
Miandad ‘not interested’
Dismissing media reports that he has been offered the coach's job by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), former captain Javed Miandad on Friday said he was not interested in taking charge of the national squad.
''There is no truth in these reports that I am aiming to become coach once again. I have been asked to join the Board's governing body and I aim to do that because I am ready to serve Pakistan cricket in any capacity. But I am not looking for any coaching job with the national team or to become even a selector,'' Miandad told mediapersons. Miandad, who has coached the Pakistan team thrice in the past, was responding to reports that he was offered the job by PCB chairman Ijaz Butt on Wednesday. The former explosive batsman insisted that he went to meet Butt as a courtesy call and was asked to serve as a governing body member. ''I want to help Pakistan cricket move forward. But a lot of hard work needs to be done and the board system and set-up really needs to be improved and made more productive and accountable and if the new Chairman wants to do this I am ready to cooperate and help in any way,'' he added. —

Cuttack, October 24 Though wickets kept on tumbling at the other end, Rohit Sharma stood firm, scoring a scintillating century to guide his team to five-wicket victory. Rohit’s 120-ball 117 was studded with 13 fours and two sixes. Opener M Vijay also did well notching up 59-ball 45. Naman Ojha's polished 96 helped India Green to set a daunting target of 261 against India Red. After winning the toss and electing to bat, India Green played with a plan and purpose to compile a healthy total of 260 for nine in 50 overs. Solid partnerships between Ojha and Shikhar Dhawan (45) for the opening wicket and then between Ojha and Suresh Raina (58) for the second wicket took India Green to a commanding position before a late-order collapse saw them losing seven wickets just for 63 runs. Facing a must win situation after their 49-run defeat in the opening match against defending champions India Blue yesterday, India Red effected two changes in their side, replacing stumper Parthiv Patel and Vinay Kumar by Wridhman Saha and Faiz Fazal. In the afternoon, the match started under a cloud cover caused by low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. India Green started on a cautious note, ensuring no loss of early wickets. Opening duo Dhawan and Ojha took time to settle down but once they got used to the low and slow character of the pitch, runs started flowing off their bats. Most of the runs came square off the wickets with 25-year-old Madhya Pradesh batsman Ojha preferring the off side and 22-year-old Dhawan the In between Ojha lifted Reds captain Badrinath straight for a sweetly timed six and then cut the next ball to point boundary for a four. Dhawan showed good ability in pulling the ball to the fence. The duo did an excellent job for the team by putting up 102 runs in 19.2 overs before Dhawan fell for 45, top-edging Mohnish Parmar to the short fine-leg where Manoj Tiwari held an easy catch. India Red's new-ball attack lacked direction and the bite. Both Pravin Kumar and L Balaji were punished the openers more often than not. With the cloud cover getting thicker, lights were switched on after the end of 18th over. The departure of Dhawan could not affect the smooth going of the Green innings as new man Raina adopted the same strategy of wait, watch and then go for runs. It resulted in another healthy partnership that produced 95 runs for the second wicket. The association between Ojha and Raina ended when the former lose patience to lost his wicket. — Agencies Scoreboard India Green: N Ojha c Vijay b Chawla 96 Dhawan c Tiwary b M Parmar 45 Raina c Tiwary b Chawla 58 Y Pathan c Fazal b Chawla 0 Kaif c Tiwary b Nayar 15 LR Shukla run out 3 Pujara not out 18 RP Singh b P Kumar 4 Gony b P Kumar 0 Pankaj b Balaji 0 Prgyan Ojha not out 1 Extras: (b-1, lb-9, w-10): 20 Total (in 50 overs, 9wkts): 260 Fall of wickets: 1/102, 2/197, 3/198, 4/226, 5/228, 6/232, 7/246, 8/246, 9/247 Bowling: Pravin Kumar 10-0-51-2, L Balaji 10-1-37-1, Abhishek Nayar 5-0-43-1, Piyush Chawla 10-0-50-3, Mohnish Parmar 10-0-45-1, Rohit Sharma 5-0-24-0. Superstars overpower Giants
Gurgaon, October 24 Chasing a target of 167, the Delhi team failed to capitalise on the flying start given by captain Marvan Atapattu (25) and fellow opener Monish Mishra as they lost wickets at regular intervals. The two Delhi openers added 60 runs in just seven overs but Syed Mohammad cleaned up Mishra who was looking dangerous for Chennai. The opener plundered two sixes and three fours in a quick 36 which came of just 20 deliveries. The Chennai bowlers, though went for runs, but did pick up wickets at crucial moments to put Delhi on the backfoot. For Chennai, Nantie Haywards was pick of the bowlers claiming two wickets for just 25 runs. Bonn, Germany, October 24 With the match moving into the second half, Anand had white for the second game in a row. This is because the games are played in pairs and the regulations switch the day that the players have white in this pair at the half way stage. Anand now needs just 1.5 points from five games to close the match and win the world title yet again. Anand has won the third, fifth and sixth games in the 12-game final. The game opened in the slav defence, and Kramnik played a line which was more safer. Kramnik invited complications and no sooner had he done that, Anand decided he also wanted to fight. Kramnik slowly began to look confused. By the 15th move, Anand had a little extra space and for the moment Black's knight is not on a great circuit. — UNI |
