Ropar, October 23 Patiala divisional commissioner S.K. Ahluwalia inaugurated the function, which started with singing of a ‘bhajan ’ by Pandit Om Prakash from Nangal. Rajan and Sajan Misra, recipients of various national awards, held the audience spellbound by their performance. Meanwhile, the youth festival for the primary students concluded today with the Gandhi Memorial Senior Secondary School bagging the overall running trophy. The Holy Family Convent School secured the second place and the Shivalik Public School stood third. The winners were given Rs 7,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 cash prize, respectively. A healthy baby show was also held on the occasion in which Anchal Verma secured first place and Hardeep Singh stood second. Nodal officer of the function ADC R.K. Tripathi said that Harpal Tiwana's play “Mittar Pyare Nu” would be staged on October 24 at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Bagh. |

on the occasion. All artistes from various colleges, who participated
in different plays, gave their best today. Although all performances
were applauded but the performance by PMN College, Rajpura, had a
special attraction of audience. The mimicry performance made everybody
amazed and laughed. In addition to the above, debate, elocution,
poetry recitation, also had a nice attraction of the audience. Fine arts
items like poster making, collage making, cartooning and installation

He has sought appropriate action against persons responsible for this death. The petitioner has also sought remedial steps to ensure against recurrence of such incidents. |

Panchkula, October 23 Arrest warrants were issued by the court of Justice Anshu Shukla against the accused in a cheque dishonour case. According to information, Aruna and Vishal were partners in a firm dealing in poultry and the cheques of the State bank of Patiala branch in Mani Majra, issued by them, were dishonoured. The complainant in the case, Jagdish Chander, spotted them at the Chandigarh courts and informed the police yesterday. The Chandigarh police arrested them and handed them over to the cops of the summon branch of Panchkula. |

Man acquitted in rape
case
Chandigarh, October 23 According to sources, Ashish (18), a student of class 10, used to take tuitions of mathematics from the victim, who was pursuing her degree in law in 2005. The two fell in love and decided to get married. However, Ashish deserted the girl soon after the marriage. Thereafter, the victim lodged a complaint against him in the women’s cell but the accused was not traceable. Subsequently, she got an FIR lodged under Sections 376 and 420 of the IPC against the accused. |

42-yr-old sets himself afire, dies
Chandigarh October 23 According to the police, the incident took place at around 11 p.m. yesterday. The police said that the deceased, a resident of Solan in Himachal Pradesh, set himself afire outside the residence of the girl. He succumbed to his injuries at the PGI today afternoon. He is survived by his wife and two
children. Police sources said that Verma was working with the girl in a city-based eating joint for the past over four years. He was recently shifted to Jalandhar. However, last night he came from Jalandhar and waited for the girl to
come from work outside her residence. When the girl returned, he ran after her and poured petrol on her as well as himself. Suspecting that he had poured acid on her, the girl raised an alarm and ran for her life. She hid herself behind a car in the darkness. After failing to trace her, Verma set himself afire. Some passers-by came to Verma’s rescue and tried to douse the flames. They informed the police which took him to the
Sector 16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital from where he as referred to the PGI. The girl reportedly told the police that she knew Verma, as he was a general manager at the eating joint. She had not spoken to him ever since he was transferred to Jalandhar. The SHO of the Sector 19 police station, Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, said a
case of attempt to suicide has been registered against Verma. His family has been informed about the incident and his father-in-law and uncle have already reached the city. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow, he added. |

Sena leader attacked by armed youths
Chandigarh, October 23 The victims were going home when they were attacked. A police official said to settle an old score, the assailants were looking for the right opportunity to teach Siya Ram a lesson. The other victim, who had come to the rescue of Siya Ram, was also attacked with a sharp-edged weapon. Both the victims have received stab wounds in their lower waist. Siya Ram is a Shiv Sena leader. An eyewitness, Paras, said a local leader, Parlad Tewari, along with other assailants, had attacked the victims. The residents of the area alleged that Parlad Tewari, a BJP leader, had been creating nuisance in the area and the police had failed to check his activities. Gurdeep Singh, a resident of the area, warned to gherao the Sector-34 police station if the assailants were not arrested. |

5 students hurt in attack
Mohali, October 23 It being a vacation from tomorrow, the victims were leaving the college campus after participating in a blood-donation camp organised by the institute. The injured, Amit Verma, Abhijeet Partap Singh, Akashit, Sarvant Singh and Tushar, have been admitted to the Fortis Hospital here. The police arrested at least two of the suspects, Kamalpreet and Yadvinder Singh, who appeared to be drug addicts, late in the evening. An official of the AIL told The Tribune that there the students were attacked without any provocation. Sources in the police said at about 2.30pm, the four youths drove in a Skoda Car (HR 70 9875) right across the entrance of AIL, and attacked the students with rods. After being arrested, two of the assailants told the police that they had been teased by one of the students of the institute yesterday, and they had come to take the revenge. But they were unable to identify the student of the institute. The car was rounded up from in front of a house in Sector 68. Raids were being carried out to trace out two other accused. One of the arrested belonged to Nabha and the second one had recently come from Australia. The police has registered a case under Sections 323, 325, 294 and 34 of the IPC. |

Clerk gets 5-year RI for forgery
Chandigarh, October 23 According to prosecution, during the period of July to October 1996, the two accused hatched a conspiracy to withdraw Rs 2,98,092 from the provident fund account number 2PN/2230/349 of Baldev Krishan, an employee of Industrial Lab Ltd. The PF was released by using false documents though the account holder never sought the withdrawal. Special public prosecutor Pawan Kumar Dogra, during the arguments, stated that Tilak had dishonestly prepared and signed form no. 19 in the name of Gurmukh Singh. The accused further filled in all entries and endorsed false machine number of the central diary section. Thereafter, Tilak forged the signatures of Atul Kumar Choubey, personal officer, Industrial Cable Ltd in Rajpura, Rajinder Kumar Gupta, section supervisor, and assistant PF commissioner R.N. Kanwar in order to get the money released. The duo was booked under Sections 120-B, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 477-A of the IPC and Sections 13 (1) (d), 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. |

Chandigarh, October 23 The police has registered separate cases under Section 379 of the IPC. Injured: A motorcyclist, Lalit Panth, a resident of Sarangpur, got injured when a car, driven by Vikas Bansal of Mohali, hit him in Sector 24. Lalit was taken to GMSH, Sector 16. The police has arrested the accused and a case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 11 police station. Arrested: The police arrested Suresh Kumar, a resident of Sector 25, from near rehri market of Sector 37 while carrying eight bottles of country-made wine. A case under Sections 61 and 114 of the Excise Act has been registered at the Sector 39 police station. The accused was bailed out later. |

4 booked for assault
Panchkula, October 23 According to the police, the accused, identified as Satbir, Arun Jakhar, Ajay Randhawa and Dheeraj Rana, are the students of the B.Tech. The accused entered the classroom and allegedly attacked Parvin Rana with rods and sharp-edged weapons. Rana, however, escaped the attack with minor injuries, said the police. The police has registered a case against the accused and four unidentified persons under Sections 323, 324, 148, 149 and 506 of the IPC. |

Panchkula, October 23 Tinku was allegedly involved in murder of Khushaal, a student of Government College, Sector 1, on October 27. As per the statement of Arun, another student who was injured in the incident, more than two dozen youths attacked them when they were standing near the college in afternoon, and after the attack, Khushaal was found lying dead on the spot. |

Rickshawpuller found dead
Chandigarh, October 23 Ruling out possibility of any foul play, the police said the body bore no visible injuries marks. The deceased has been identified as Pardeep Kumar, a resident of Himachal Pradesh. The police said the deceased used to stay near the rickshaw stand and was a drunkard. A police officer said the death might have been caused due to over drinking. The body was sent to the Sector 16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital. Meanwhile, the police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code. |

Bhullar rallies with hat-trick of birdies
Chandigarh, October 23 One stroke behind at one under par 70 was Chandigarh big hitter Gurbaaz Mann, who turned 26 on October 19. Gurbaaz played a bogey-free card, sinking a birdie on the last hole, to be tied 47th. But leading the Indian brigade was 30-year-old Rahil Gangjee from Kolkata, who shot four birdies in a flawless four under par 67 card to be tied 11th after the first round. One stroke behind was Anirban Lahiri, who played a three under par 68 to be tied 21st. Twenty-year-old Bhullar started well birdying the second, sixth and eighth holes after bogeying the first for a two under par 33 at the turn. But then he struck an awful patch on the back nine conceding three bogeys on the 12th, 13th and 14th to be one over. The Kapurthala lad kept his cool and came back with a hat trick of birdies on the last three holes to be two under par 69. Gaurav Ghei played a par round of 71 to be tied 62nd while Amandeep Johl of Chandigarh was tied 117 with a poor five over par 76. Australia's David Gleeson blasted seven birdies for a seven-under-par 64 for a one stroke advantage over Thai duo of Wisut Artjanawat and Udorn Duangdecha and Chinese Taipei brothers of Lin Wen-tang and Lin Wen-hong, who were all in a tie for second place. Chandigarh, October 23 St Peter's and Carmel Convent scored an identical 2-0 verdict over their respective rivals in the semifinals played today. St Peter's blanked Mount Carmel School, Chandigarh, by 2-0 and Carmel Convent accounted for Carmel Convent School, Chanakya Puri, Delhi, with an identical margin. Shivika gave Peter's a winning start by defeating Joanna in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the first singles. Avneet proved too good for Komal as she registered a facile win without dropping even a single game 6-0, 6-0. Shivika and Avneet are training at St Peter's Tennis Academy under the supervision of Wg Cdg Beyant Singh and Lalit Tandon. Kang steers city to finals

Chandigarh, October 23 In one of the hottest contested regional fimals played on the greens of the Classic Golf Resort in Gurgaon, the Chandigarh team edged out Jaipur's Rambagh Palace by just one stroke. The Chandigarh Golf Club totalled 127 points with Jaipur golfers managing 126. The top scores in each category and the fourth best card out of the total six members contributed to the final tally of the respective team. The Noida Golf Club, three-time winners of the event, finished at the third spot. Apart from Kang, the winning team consisted of Navjot Mann, AS Bath, JS Kesar, PPS Sawhney and Col. SDS Bath while the team from Jaipur was represented by Siddharth Sharma, Varun Pardhal, Ajay Dixit, Kunal Kuchal, Deepak Sharma and Harvinder Singh. The winners went home with a plasma television set and of course an-all paid expense trip to the enchanting Bali islands. With this win, the Chandigarh Golf Club, which beat nine other clubs, became the second club to book a spot in the finals after the unheralded and debutants Belgaum made it to the title clash from the South. The regional final was the second stage of India's largest and most exciting golf tournament. Stephen’s beat DAVSSS in finals
Chandigarh, October 23 The regulation period proved unproductive, as no team could score any goal. Even during regular five penalties each, the deadlock remained as they were tied four-all. It needed 20 penalties to resolve the issue. After 5-all, Medhavi of DAVSSS club failed in her attempt while Amanpreet Kaur Nagpal converted her spot kick to clinch the title in favour of St Stephen’s Football Club. Earlier, in the regulation period, DAVSSS club goalkeeper Asha put up a good performance and made a couple of brilliant saves.
DAVSSS Club’s Monika also excelled in defence as Stephen’s forwards, especially Shikha Sharma and Simran Sidhu spelt danger once they were inside the box. |

Grewal to focus on MAKA Trophy
Chandigarh, October 23 The trophy is awarded every year to the university, which displays an overall excellence in the field of sports. The university hasn’t been able to bag the prestigious MAKA Trophy for many years now. One of the main reasons for it could be an absence of the director sports, as there was no one to anchor the staff effectively and during this period the standard of the Panjab University sports department had really fallen down. |
