Football Tourney
Stage set for North zone inter-varsity
Ravi Dhaliwal

Patiala, October 17
Punjabi University starts favourites when the North zone inter-university football tournament commences at three different grounds on the Punjabi university campus here tomorrow.

The organisers have made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the tourney. The six-day tournament, through which various professional clubs spot and later recruit talented players, has attracted 34 teams from the region.

The teams have been lodged in the hostel of the Model Senior Secondary located within the Punjabi university campus.

Coaches and managers of Punjab’s top clubs like JCT Mills, Punjab Police, Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, and Border Security Force (BSF) have already reached the venue. They will be keeping a hawk’s eyes on talented players and later these hand picked footballers will be offered employment opportunities to the players by these clubs.

Earlier, the All India Gurdarshan memorial football, used to be played at Nabha, 20 kms from here. However, infighting among the organisers of the three-decade-old tournament led to the natural death of one of the country’s premier football tournaments to be played in this part of the country.

This development has led to football lovers focusing their attention on the inter-university tournament.

The teams, which have been seeded directly into the quarterfinal stage, are Punjabi University, Panjab University, Chandigarh, GNDU, Amritsar and Kurukshetra University.

Panjab University and GNDU are expected to make things tough for the hosts who are the reigning champions. About 14 players of Punjabi University are from the Dalbir Football Academy. Interestingly, renowned football coach Dalbir Singh, who runs the academy, is also the coach of the Punjabi University team.

At present the hosts are making waves in the Punjab football league (B division) and are sitting at the top of the table by garnering nine points. The Punjab football league will resume after the commencement of the North zone tournament.

The semi-final will be played on a league basis and all the four teams making it to the last four leagues will figure in the All India inter-university football tournament slated to be played at Goa University from November 10 to 15.

Tribune News Service

Rajpura, October 17
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau, acting on a complaint filed by a former municipal councillor, sealed records of Rajpura municipal council office today. In his complaint to the various departments, former councillor Jagdish Kumar Jagga has alleged that a large number of local contractors have floated tenders on less than prescribed rates of the government. The Vigilance Bureau has also directed MC officials to stop work in connection with these tenders.

Jagdish, while talking to TNS, said the council would suffer loss of more than Rs 1 crore due to this fraud. “The contractors have not done this on their own. MC officials are also hand in glove with these contractors and have earned handsomely out of finalising the deal,” he alleged.

Municipal engineer Tarsem Rai said that contractors have now been told to give new tenders with revised rates, which should be more than their earlier rates for various developmental works. He added that developmental works worth Rs 3.25 crore were to be completed in coming few days. “However, due to less amount prescribed by contractors in almost all tenders, they have now been told to make entries with revised rates. We have already shot letters to them on Monday,” he said.

Tribune News Service

Mohali, October 17
Hundreds of students from rural area of Punjab, who had been invited to witness the India-Australia test, were at the mercy of the event organisers as they were left without food and water. Around 5,000 students from different schools of Punjab had come to the PCA to watch the match.

Many students were seen requesting cops for drinking water as there was no arrangement of water for them. It was at the end of the match that a tanker was brought to quench the thirst of the students. “We were made to sit on the side facing the sun. It was very tiring”, said Hardeep.

To give the guests special treatment, the PCA had roped in Hotel Taj, GVK, which provided the lunch to the young cricket lovers. But a number of the visitors were left without food and water. Some of the students claimed that instead of mineral water bottle and a cold drink bottle, a water tanker was arranged at the fag end of the day.

The step to facilitate the students of backward areas has been taken at the instance of Sukhbir Badal, president of the SAD and chairman of the PCA organising committee. The special buses, which were put in service free of cost for these guests by the state government, were parked about three kilometres away from the match venue. Having started at 5 am in the morning, the students were already tired by the time they reached the PCA Stadium.

The buses deputed to bring students of Gurdaspur, Bathinda, Faridkot, Moga and other districts were withdrawn from rural routes in Punjab. This resulted in harassment to the commuters in the rural areas.
