Lecture on teaching:
Educationist O.P. Chaudhary introduced the ways and means to make education more interesting and useful in the DAV college on Thursday during an extension lecture on micro teaching. He involved the would-be-teachers in his lecture objectively. Principal Venita Singh thanked him and presented a memento.

Tributes paid: R.P. Asija, former senate member of the Panjab University, along with others paid tributes to Kulwant Singh Bhatti, who had died last week. During the condolence meeting held here on Thursday, Asija said that Bhatti had emerged as a realistic poet, singer, educationist and social activist. Legislator Sunil Jakhar and heads of many institutions and NGOs also mourned his death.

Aagman-2008: AAGMAN-2008, a welcome treat for the new entrants of B.Tech and M.B.A.-2008 batch was organised at Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering & Technology Campus in Sangrur. S. Paramjeet Singh (IPS) was the chief guest on the occasion. DIG Patiala Range, S. Hakam Singh Jawandha, Chairman of Bhai Gurdas Group of Institutions inaugurated this event. In his inaugural address, the chief guest enthused the students to be industrious to fulfill their dream. Tanuja Srivastva welcomed the chief guest throwing light on the achievements of BGIETians in various fields.

Truckers stage dharna
: Members of the Truck Union, Mansa, on Thursday staged a dharna against the HDFC Bank in front of its local branch for not releasing some amount that was deposited with the bank. They raised slogans against bank officials. President of the union Malkit Singh said the bank was not releasing Rs 14 lakh. On the other hand, the bank manager said there was a legal hurdle in releasing the amount.

2 killed in accident
: Two persons were killed on spot when their motorbike went out of control and plunged into a 100-m deep gorge at Tissa colony blind curve in Churah subdivision of the district, about 62 km from here, on Wednesday, according to a report received here on Thursday. The deceased had been identified as Prem Lal (35) and Lal Chand (44) of Tissa village. The deceased, who were the employees of a shop, were returning to their home during the night hours. After a post-mortem the bodies were handed over to their families.

Suicide committed
: Dinesh Kumar (25) reportedly committed suicide by taking some poisonous substance. Police sources said Dinesh, a resident of Jandrala, under Badsar police station, was running a computer shop at Mehrain and reportedly consumed poison on Wednesday night. He was brought to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Snakebite kills girl: A four-year-old child died on Wednesday night as a result of snakebite in her house. According to information, Kajal, daughter of Ashok Kumar, a resident of Barmoti under Nadaun police station, was sleeping in her house when a poisonous snake bit her. The girl was taken to the hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Office-bearers: Sanjeev Kumar Thakur has been elected as president and Rajinder Kumar as general-secretary of the District Contractors’ Association in the elections held here on Thursday.

Water bills on time: The Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) Department has assured the Hamirpur consumer protection organisation to provide water bills on time and not to charge fine in case of late delivery of bills and also ensured regular water supply to the consumers.

Rs 10,000 donated: Secretary of the Sarvhit Sudhar Sabha Hem Raj Chadha in a good will gesture travelled all the way to Bhubaneswar to donate Rs 10,000 to Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for flood-affected people in the state recently.

Shop gutted
: A shop was burnt to ashes near railway crossing at Bharmar in Jawali subdivision on Wednesday night due to a short circuit. Bishamber Singh, the owner of the shop, was intimated by the railway gatekeeper, who along with local youths struggled to extinguish the fire, in which the shop owner sustained burn injuries. SDM Mohar Singh visited the spot along with the revenue staff. An estimate loss of about Rs 65,000 has been assessed.

One dies in mishap: Ajay Kumar (17), son of Joginder Singh of Bharbhol village in Larath gram panchayat, died on the spot when a tractor-trolley on which he was riding overturned near Raja Ka Talab in this sub division on Wednesday night. According to information, the tractor was overturned due to some technical fault. The driver of the tractor-trolley was also injured in the mishap. The police has lodged a case in this connection.

Declamation contest: A declamation contest was organised in the local Noorpur Public school on Thursday to celebrate World Food Safety and Quality Day. The students also presented a skit to highlight the importance of food safety and quality. The director of the school, Arvind Dogra, called upon the students to avoid consumption of adulterated eatables.
