Chased, liquor smugglers jump into Sutlej
Ropar, October 7 The officials put up a naka on Sirhind canal bridge at around 5:30 pm. ETO Balwinder Singh Sekhon, excise inspector Gurdeep Singh and four Punjab Police head constables were present on the spot. According to sources, it was decided to stop vehicles one by one for checking. Instead of this, four vehicles were stopped at the same time. This led to chaos on the narrow road. The driver of a black Scorpio vehicle overtook all vehicles and tried to flee the scene. The officials observed that Scorpio vehicle was loaded. They followed the vehicle. The chase ended near Water Lily restaurant. Before the police and excise officials could catch the accused, two persons got out of the vehicle and jumped into the Sutlej. Both the accused were turbaned. They swam away from the place. The sources said, the officials did not get any document from the vehicle. The possibility of the vehicle being stolen has also not been ruled out. The officials also suspect that accused might have taken away documents of the vehicle. The registration number of the vehicle is of Delhi. The officials have seized 61 boxes of Speed liquor that was intended for sale in Chandigarh and was being illegally taken to Punjab for sale. A case has been registered under Section 61 A of the Excise Act. A penalty of Rs 1 lakh has been imposed on the accused. |

BSP to go it alone in Punjab: Secy
Ropar, October 7 Narinder was here to participate at the state-level function held in memory of the party's founder Kanshi Ram's death anniversary. He condemned the N-deal and said the common man is being misguided over the deal. "Similarly in Punjab, neither the SAD-BJP alliance nor the Congress has managed to do justice to common man. We are sure of victory in the coming Lok Sabha elections and will field our candidates for all seats," he said. He said the party had already decided the names of candidates for the Lok Sabha seats of Fatehgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, Sangrur, Ludhiana and Ferozepur. The names are yet to be made public. He said not only the OBC, the SC, the ST and other minorities are becoming a part of the BSP, but also other people from general category are also joining it in large number. Mother of infants commits suicide
Ropar, October 7 A resident of Malhotra road, Namrata has married Kuljinder Singh two years ago. On Monday afternoon, she hanged herself with a dupatta. In her complaint to the police, Namrata's mother Jaswinder Kaur, a resident of Muzaffarnagar village in Nakodar, alleged that Kuljinder did not inform her about Namrata immediately after she hanged herself. "We were informed about the mishap after three to four hours of the incidence," she told the police. She alleged that Kuljinder and his mother Harmanjit Kaur had been harassing Namrata for dowry soon after the marriage was solemnised two years ago. Namrata was harassed to bring more dowry from her parents and she was unable to bear this pressure. Kuljinder works as an ETT teacher at a government school in nearby Chak Dher village. The police did not find any suicide note in the house. Kuljinder and his mother Harmanjit have been arrested for abetment to suicide. |

Collision leaves 20 hurt
Kharar, October 7 The incident took place at 6 pm, when three cars collided with each other in a bid to overtake. The auto rickshaw collided with them carrying passengers. Five people have sustained serious injuries. These include Hashvinder Singh, Avtar Singh, Urmila Devi, Suraj Gill and Rajiv Kapila. All of them are admitted at Government Medical College, Sector 32, Chandigarh. Rano and Navjeet are admitted at the civil hospital, Kharar. Other injured were discharged after being administered first aid for minor injuries. |

Chandigarh, October 7 The employees assembled outside the corporation building in the morning and staged a dharna. After sometime, they marched towards the Punjab Governor house in a procession to meet the Administrator to present their memorandum of demands to him. But the Administrator did not meet the representatives of the employees at noon but official of the Governor house asked them to come at 4 pm but even on the second visit, the Administrator did not meet them. |

Raman Mohindera, a resident of Shimla, filed a complaint with the police alleging that his laptop was stolen from his car (HP-03-B-6400) from Industrial Area-2, on October 6. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered.

Mandeep Singh, a junior engineer with the municipal corporation, Chandigarh, filed a complaint with the police alleging that one laltain-type fitting costing Rs 10,000 was stolen from near the CBI office, Sector 30, on October 7. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the police station, Sector 17.

Vijay Bindra, a resident of Sukhna Enclave, filed a complaint with the police alleging that her purse containing one mobile phone, an ATM card, a driving licence, registration certificates and cash of Rs 5,000 was stolen from Sector 8, on October 5. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered at the police station, Sector 3.

2 houses burgled in Baltana
Zirakpur, October 7 According to the police, Kirpal Singh, a resident of Ravindra Enclave, told the police that he had gone to meet his relative in Haryana on October 5. On Tuesday morning, his neigbhour called him and told about the incident. He came back this evening and found that the locks of his house were broken. The house was ransacked. He alleged that the cash around Rs 12,000, gold and silver ornaments worth lakhs were missing from the almirahs, the police added. In another case, thieves ransacked another house in the same locality, when nobody was at home. According to the police, Vijay Kumar, the owner of the house, alleged he went to his relative’s place on October 6. When he came back today, he found the household goods were strewn on the floor. He alleged that cash around 35,000 and gold ornaments were missing, the police added. The police has registered a case and started further investigations. |

Aman fires best card of the day
Chandigarh, October 7 Aman, who turned 17 on January 22, fought the windy conditions and the tough course to repeat a good performance on the local greens. Barely a few days back he had won the under 17 title in the Albatross Junior Championship. Following another stroke behind Chikkarangappa was Korean Jong Yung Kim. More than 130 golfers from all over the country are in the fray for the four titles at stake in the first major IGU-categorised tournament. Aman began with a birdie on the second. But three birdies on the third, sixth and seventh saw him finish the front nine at two over par 38. The return nine saw the Chandigarh teenager concede one bogey for a 37 and a card of three over par 75. Chikkarangappa was still to get a grasp over the Chandigarh greens as he lost five strokes in the back nine, including a double bogey on the 18th. Chandigarh's Dhruv Kumar and Jaipal Singh led the field in the under-15 category firing identical seven over par 79 scores. One stroke behind was Tarundeep Singh Chadha, who had last week fired the best one over par 73 card in the Albatross Junior Golf Tournament. Another stroke behind was Delhi girl Gauri Monga. With the help Rajinder Bisht’s brilliant knock of 67 off 44 balls, they mustered a big total of 146 runs in the allotted 15 overs. Replying, Delhi gave a very tough fight to Moody, and scored 123 runs in the allotted 15 overs for 5 wickets. Kapil Mehta scored 53 runs off 46 balls. In the second semifinal played at Sector-16 Cricket Stadium, hosts Chandigarh defeated Himachal Pradesh by 6 wickets to enter into the final.
