Fatehgarh Sahib, September 29
A large number of ex-servicemen yesterday alleged harassment and cheating by the officials of the canteen store department (CSD) at Fatehgarh Sahib.

They alleged that the officials did not allow them to make purchase as per their entitlements. The retired Army officials could make purchases of a fix amount from the CSD on subsidised rates.

“If my entitlement is of Rs 2,000, the canteen officials use 50 per cent of it for others from my account. They do not allow us to use full entitlement,” alleged a retired havildar, Mukand Singh, a resident of Thablan village near Bassi Pathana.

“I was given only two bottles of rum (liquor) that too from the account of someone else. I am entitled to buy at least four bottles from the canteen, besides I could buy other things worth Rs 2,000,” he said.

He alleged that the canteen officials were also not attending to the ex-servicemen. “The officials started hurling abuses on us when we requested them to allow us to buy things from the canteen,” he added.

The retired Army personnel alleged that the canteen officials sold things to others by using one account for many customers.

They have brought the matter to the notice of senior officials and the president of the State Ex-Servicemen Union. “Now, we have made a written complaint, demanding immediate action against the erring officials,” said aggrieved ex-servicemen.

We would also raise the matter during the meeting of the district union of the ex-servicemen, they said.

However, the canteen officials refused to comment on the issue and said they did not allow purchasing on the last days of month due to stock-taking wherein they had to check the accounts of the month.

‘Indian hockey all set to start afresh’
Sandeep Rana

Chandigarh, September 29
With the appointment of Harendra Singh as coach incharge, the Indian hockey is all set to look forward, leaving behind the old bad memories, feels Indian ace-drag flicker Raghunath V. R.

“The team is young and vibrant. Moreover, we all are keen to take the game to new heights, forgetting the sore past. Though the Indian hockey witnessed a lot of turbulent on and off the field, but I feel it all was past, and time has come to start afresh,” said Raghunath, who is in the city to participate in the ongoing 38th S. N. Vohra’s Gurmeet Memorial Hockey Tournament representing Indian Oil Corporation team.

Terming the failure of the Indian hockey team in Olympic qualifier a big shock for the country and the game, Raghunath said we should learn lesson from it.

Sharing his past experiences with The Chandigarh Tribune, Raghunath V. R., ace Indian hockey drag flicker, said, “In 2007-08, we hadn’t lost even a single tournament except the one which we lost to England in Olympic qualifying match, and owing to that we couldn’t make it to the Beijing Olympics.” Terming the loss a bad luck, he said, “We all had an off colour and none of our players clicked on that day.”

“Many big tournaments like Asian Games and Commonwealth Games are coming, and without wasting a single moment, we should chalk out the preparatory programme,” he added.

On the recent controversy erupted due to the shortage of money to fund its food during the four-nation tournament in Australia, Ragunath said, “I am not aware of it, we didn’t have this sort of any problem in Australia. I just saw headlines flashing on television today, and I don’t trust everything shown on the television,” he quipped.

This hockey prodigy hails from a place called Coorg in Karnataka that he said was known for hockey in South the way Punjab was in North. So it was obvious for him to fall for this game.

He joined the Indian squad in 2002-03 and has got a unique recognition as a drag flicker. He considers Asian Games’ triumph as the biggest achievement in his life. And like others, his dream remains the same to win gold in Olympics.

Meanwhile, this champ has stood up to the expectations of his fans in Chandigarh as well and continues to put up a great show in the ongoing Gurmeet hockey tournament, where today he helped his team to win the quarterfinals by netting two crucial goals.

This was the first over par card by Jeev who played steady 69-71-69 scores on the first three days of the 1.8 million pound European Tour event.

Shiv Kapur finished tied 59th with an overall seven over par 295 (72-71-78-74).

Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño won the title after a thrilling play-off with Lee Westwood. The Spaniard started the final round two shots behind the defending champion but a brilliant final round 67, which did not contain a single bogey, took him level with the England player on a 12 under par total of 276.

Jeev started steadily playing par scores till the fifth hole. But then he blundered with a double bogey on the sixth and a bogey on the ninth to take the turn at three over par 39.

He started the return nine with a birdie on the 10th followed by another one on the 13th. He bogeyed the 16th, but made amends on the last hole for a one over par 73 card.

After the third round yesterday Jeev was tied third playing a three under par 69. In fact on the first three days he seemed all set to achieve his dream of winning the British Masters. But his final one over card saw him slip to tied fifth slot. This performance has certainly taken him higher on the order of merit of the European Tour.

The final leading scores: 276 Gonzalo Fdez-Castano, Spain (71-70-68-67) and Lee Westwood, England (68-70-68-70); 278 Michael Campbell, New Zealand (69-72-65-72); 280 Mikael Lundberg, Sweden (67-75-68-70); 282 Charl Schwartzel, South Africa (72-72-66-72) and Jeev Milkha Singh, India (69-71-69-73); 283 Magnus A.
