IT dept to scrutinise 2,100 cases

The Income Tax Department has short listed at least 2,100 cases belonging to various categories, including salaried employees and professionals, who have submitted their returns by March 31 this year for scrutiny.

Wife’s body found in trunk, man booked

In a brutal incident a man allegedly strangulated his wife, put her body in a trunk and fled away. The body was found today morning.

Interstate gang of robbers busted, 2 held

The Ludhiana (rural) police has busted an inter-state gang that had been stealing goods from godowns owned by various government agencies in connivance with a few transporters and traders. Two members of the gang, including a woman, have been arrested while other members, including the kingpin, are absconding.

Industrial units surrender

Five industrial units surrendered Rs 5.25 crore of undisclosed income to the Income Tax Department today. The department had conducted surveys on these units yesterday.

BKU rallies against drug addiction

A number of “warning rallies” against drug addiction were organised across Punjab by the state unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) today with an aim to warn drug peddlers to stop the illegal trade and also to create awareness about the deadly evil among the masses.

Non-teaching staff threaten stir

Perturbed over the “adamant attitude” of Punjab Agricultural University vice-chancellor M.S. Kang over his secretary’s appointment recently, the non-teaching employees are all prepared to give an ultimatum to the authorities in coming days. In case the VC fails to revert the appointment orders within seven days, the non-teaching employees will go on strike from second week of October, they threatened.

PAU students call-off strike

The students of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) called off their strike after detailed discussions with the vice-chancellor, Dr M.S. Kang, which lasted till 8 pm yesterday.

Supplementary exams begin
English least favourite among students
Ludhiana, September 27
Supplementary exams of various classes (undergraduate and postgraduate) of Panjab University, Chandigarh, started at different centres here today. A majority of students, who took the supplementary exams, were of English language, and could not score even the passing marks (35) in their first attempt. Since the majority of them came from rural backgrounds, faculty blamed "poor foundation" provided to them in the government schools.

Tributes paid to Bhagat Singh

A man gets tattoo of Bhagat Singh made on his arm Tributes were paid to Bhagat Singh by management and staff of the chain of Green Land Schools. Addressing the staff at Green Land School and Senior Secondary Public School, chairman-cum-director of Green Land Schools, Rajesh Rudhra, said teachers must imbibe in students the spirit of patriotism so that they stood for unity and integrity of the country. The teachers pledged to make youth of the country as agents of social reform by inculcating right values in them. Also present were Shabad Rudhra, president of the trust, and principals of the chain of Green Land Schools.

Picturesque, a photo exhibition by Jaswant Zafar, opened at PSEB hall opposite PAU today. Following the preview at PSEB hall till September 29, the 15-day exhibition would be held at Artmosphere Gallery at the Ferozepur road.

Goods worth Rs 3 lakh seized, 3 held 
Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 27
The local police has busted a gang of thieves that had been active in the area for the past one year. Most of the members have been arrested from different places during the past few days and goods worth Rs 3 lakh have also been recovered from their possession. Those arrested have been identified as Harkesh, alias Raju, the kingpin, Pammi Sachdeva and Rajwant Singh, alias Sanjay of the local town. The suspects were nabbed on the basis of information provided by neighbhours of the victims.

Vehicle thieves nabbed
Jagraon, September 27
The local police arrested two vehicle thieves from a bridge near Gagra village today. SHO Pritam Singh said a barricade put up at the Gagra bridge. They were tipped off that the two bike thieves were coming from the Sudhar side on a stolen bike.

Minor abducted, raped
Ludhiana, September 27
A youth, who had allegedly abducted and raped a minor girl of Shiv Puri, was arrested near the Jalandhar bypass here today.

Bribery Case
Tehsildar's bail plea hearing on Oct 4

Ludhiana, September 27
Special Judge G.S.Sran today ordered to issue notice to the Vigilance Bureuau while taking up the bail applications filed by tehsildar-cum-sub registrar (West) Arvind Parkash Verma and co-accused Parminder Pal Singh in a graft case. The arguments on the bail applications would be heard on October 4. They had moved application seeking bail before Sessions Judge G.K.Rai, who entrusted the same to this court for disposal.

Mohali thrash Moga B 4-3
Ludhiana, September 27
After leading by three goals, Mohali squandered away the advantage and just managed to squeeze past Moga B 4-3 in a group B match of the u-14 section in the Punjab State Weekend Hockey Tournament for boys being organised by the Punjab Sports Department at the Prithipal Singh Memorial AstroTurf Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University campus, here today.
