Ropar leads in wheat production in North India
Ropar, September 27 Agriculture department officials were informed of the achievements during a regional workshop of the northern states held at Ludhiana recently. Uttar Pradesh and Haryana were among the other states participating in the workshop. The district had attained 41. 27 quintal per hectare of wheat yield, while last year it produced only 37. 82 quintal per hectare wheat. The total area under wheat cultivation in Ropar is about 62, 000 hectares. Ropar is among the ten districts of Punjab that were selected under NFSM. The other nine districts include Sangrur, Ferozepur, Amristar, Hoshiarpur, Tarn Taran, Mohali, Gurdaspur, Barnala, and Bathinda. These districts had been registering low yield of wheat despite their potential to produce more. Chief agriculture officer, Ropar, Dr Subhash Chander Khurana said under the project various facilities were offered to the farmers. These included certified seeds at a subsidised cost of Rs 500 per quintal, agriculture implements like rotavators and seed drills. Besides this, farmers were also provided micronutrients like zinc sulphate on 50 per cent subsidy.
Mid-day meal costs teachers dear
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 27 The ration being provided to the children has failed to reach in time and senior functionaries of the education department have now released orders that teachers should arrange ration for children at their own. Teachers in various schools of the district revealed that they were forced to buy ration from various shops and flour mills of the area by spending money from their own pocket. "We all are told to arrange ration by making purchase of Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 from nearby shops and flour mills. We are being pressured to buy ration every Monday or Tuesday when we run out of the stock", said a teacher at Bassi Pathana. "Earlier, whenever the mid-day meal stock exhausted, students were not given the meals. But around two months ago, we were issued strict orders to get ration on our own and ensure that children get food daily", said another teacher in Bassi Pathana. Jaswant Kaur, BPEO (Block Primary Education Officer) of Bassi Pathana-1 at Khera village, said teaches were told to arrange for the ration due to delay in supply. The teachers in all 90 schools of Bassi Pathana-1, Khera, have been told to provide food to children continuously even if ration gets delayed or does not reach at all. For primary classes, the children are given 100 grams of rice and chapati on alternate days and for classes VI to VIII, 150 grams of rice and wheat is provided. Since the mid-day meal scheme for classes VI to VIII has started recently, this problem is witnessed in various schools of the district. |

Farmer killed
Kharar, September 27 At around 5.30am today, his son Ram Kumar went to give tea to his father, when he saw Sher Singh lying dead on the ground. He had been strangulated and there were injuries on his head, arms and legs. Police was
informed. Dalbir Singh, SHO, sadar, said a case had been registered against unknown persons on Ram Kumar's complaint. A postmortem of the deceased was conducted and body was handed over to the relatives. |

Samtel worker run over by truck
Kalka, September 27 He along with his friends were on their way to Kalka, when around 10:30 pm, a speeding truck from Shimla side near the Kalka-Parwanoo barrier, crushed Bobby, who was rushed to ESI Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. After the incident, the driver fled leaving the truck on National Highway-22 near Kalka, which created a traffic chaos on the highway. The truck was impounded by the police after registering the case against the truck driver. The body of the deceased was handed over to relatives after conducting the post-mortem at ESI Hospital,

Air Show at Ambala
Ambala, September 27 The show started with a performance by Wg Cdr AK Gandotra who displayed the formation and manoeuvring of a Microlite. The performance was followed by display of a team of six Jaguars led by Wg Cdr Maluk Singh. The Jaguars displayed a two-aircraft formation and solo sorties and twin formation landing, which left many awe-struck. The final performance was by the renowned the Suryakiran Formation Aerobatic Wing Commander Joy Thomas Kurien, Commanding Officer of the team, led today’s performance with Wg Cdr Sandeep Singh, Wg Cdr Vinay Pratap Singh, Wg Cdr RS Dhaliwal VM, Wg Cdr Arunaksha Nandy, Sqn Ldr Puneet Vig. Wg Cdr Vineet Kumar Dubey, Wg Cdr Sumeet Malhotra, Wg Cdr Rajat Tyagi were the other members of the team. The display which lasted for about 10 minutes left everyone impressed. |

MMIM team wins paper presentation contest
Ambala, September 27 On second day of the conference, there were two technical sessions on the themes ‘Sectoral loyalty’ and ‘Loyalty through relationships’, which were presided over by Dr D. D. Arora, chairman & professor, Department of Management, Kurukshetra University, and Dr Pankaj Madaan, reader, Gurukul Kangri Vishvavidhyalya, Hardwar. Papers were presented by delegates in these technical sessions. Also, the institute organised students’ paper presentation contest in which 26 teams from various management institutes of the region participated. The first prize worth Rs 5,000 was bagged by the team of MMIM comprising Sakshi Chanana, Raman Dua, Gaurav Bhardwaj and Ankit Sahni, whereas the team of Shefali Gupta, Geetika Trivedi and Vishnu Goel of MMIM stood second and won a prize of Rs. 3000. There was a tie for the third prize of Rs 2,000 among between Poddar of Bharti Vidyapeeth, New Delhi, and Parth Chaddha and Parminder Singh of MMIM, Mullana. In the valedictory session, Prof. Renu Sharma, customer relationship expert, Integrated Customer Solutions, was the chief guest. Other eminent guests were Tarsem Garg, chancellor, M. M. University, Mullana, Dr. L. C. Gupta, managing director, Dr N.P. Mehta, pro-VC, and Vishal Garg, treasurer, M M University, Mullana. The conference had an overwhelming response as 106 papers were received and it was attended by 68 delegates from all over India. |

Judge’s Murder
Chandigarh, September 27 JMIC, Dr Rajneesh, was located at the Patiala courts at that time. Deposing before the court, she stated that the specimen hair of accused Manjit Singh, who had allegedly murdered the Judge at Labour Courts in Patiala, Vijay Singh, were taken on October 22, 2005, after seeking his consent. The specimen of hair was taken to compare it with the hair recovered from the dead body of the deceased. The Judge further stated that co-accused Dr Ravdeep Kaur’s specimen signatures were taken on October 25 for the purpose of comparison of handwriting on certain documents that were recovered by the police. The two accused in the case, Manjeet Singh and Dr Ravdeep Kaur, are in the Burail Jail here. Investigations by the police revealed that Dr Ravdeep Kaur had given Rs 5 lakh to Manjeet Singh, a resident of Sheikhupura village, Patiala, for the crime. The families of Dr Ravdeep Kaur and Vijay Singh were good friends, and once a proposal for marriage of the two was considered. However, things could not
materialise. According to the prosecution, on the intervening night of October 12 and 13 in 2005, Vijay Pal Singh, Judge at Labour Courts, Patiala, was murdered in Polo Ground, Patiala. Manjit Singh, who allegedly murdered him, reached the Polo Ground on his motorcycle, armed with a sword as he was having information that Vijay Singh would be coming for his evening walk there. |

Cash Scam
Chandigarh, September 27 The CBI counsel further stated before the CBI Special Court of Jagdeep Jain that names and addresses of accomplices were to be verified in the presence of the accused, thus his CBI remand was necessary. However, the application seeking the remand did not mention the name of The remand application stated that some names had been mentioned during the course of investigation that were yet to be identified. Contesting the remand application, the defence counsel said there were no strong grounds on which the CBI was seeking remand. He further added that Ravinder had not slept for the past two days and his medicines were also not given on time. Thereafter, the court extended his remand to September 30.
Subsequently, Ravinder’s counsel moved an application before the CBI Court. He had requested the court not to produce him before the committee formed by the Chief Justice of India while he was in the CBI custody. The court kept the application on record and requested the defence counsel to submit the application before the registrar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court stated: “At this stage the defence counsel submits that his sugar is to be regularly monitored. Thus, Ravinder’s medical examination shall be held after every 24 hours instead of 48 hours.” |

Accused in Tanishq theft case nabbed
Chandigarh, September 27 With the arrest of one of the members of the gang, Manoj Kumar of Ajmer (Rajasthan), the Chandigarh police today claimed to have solved the theft of 16 bracelets worth Rs 6 lakh from Tanishq, Sector 17, showroom on April 20 this year. The police brought Manoj on production warrants from the Rajasthan police, which arrested the accused a few days back. Sub-inspector Sanjeev Kumar, in charge of the Neelam police post, told The Tribune that the other members of the gang had been identified as Jai Chand, his son Karan and Jai Chand's girl friend Jai Shree and Shamu Topiwala. Jai Chand, in his early 50s, is said to be the kingpin of the gang. Manoj told mediapersons that he, along with Jai Chand, Karan, Jai Shree, started from Ajmer on April 19. Jai Chand asked him to accompany them to Chandigarh and they drove overnight to reach the city in a Tata Sumo (GJ-1K-6975). Manoj added that Jai Chand assigned him the job to engage some of the sales persons in a conversation to divert their attention from him and Jai
Shree. At the shop, Jai Chand picked up the ornaments while Jai Shree concealed them under the folds of her saree. As per the plan, they took their positions and as soon as Jai Chand and Jai Shree accomplished the target, they left the shop. He drove the vehicle and they went to Ajmer, he added. He admitted that he sold the ornaments for Rs 2.10 lakh and was promised Rs 15,000, but later, Jai Chand refused to pay him his share. According to the police, Manoj threatened to expose Jai Chand before the police and suspecting that he could do so, someone associated with Jai Chand approached the police against Manoj and he was arrested. Acting on his confessions, the Ajmer police informed its Chandigarh counterpart, which brought Manoj to the city on production warrants. Manoj told the police that they had stolen jewellery worth Rs 4.50 lakh from Bhubaneshwar and from the other parts of the country in a similar fashion. The police took him to the showroom to reconstruct the sequences of events and also viewed the close circuit TV camera's footage. SI Sanjeev Kumar said the accused had been remanded in the one-day police custody. The Clock Tower police station in Ajmer had recovered the bracelets from which diamonds had been taken out after melting the ornaments. The complainant would be taken there for identification and further proceedings. |

2 schoolboys go missing
Chandigarh, September 27 Surinder Kumar, father of Sahil, said, “Both have been missing since the last six days. My son usually goes alone to school. After returning from school, he went again on the pretext of attending extra classes. We waited for him for about four hours and when he did not turn up, we searched for him but failed to find any trace of the missing children.” He said when all their efforts to trace the children proved futile, they went to the Sector-39 police station to lodge complaint. The police officer on duty lodged DDR. Krishan Behal, father of Shivam, said, “I dropped my son to school that morning, but he did not come back after his classes. After some time we learnt that one of his friends was also missing. I suspect the students who had a brawl with my son a few days back outside the school.” When contacted, Rajesh Shukla, SHO of police station-39 said, “We have lodged a DDR in this regard and the message has been flashed to various police stations in the region, giving description of the missing children. Rajinder Kaur, principal of Government Model School-40, said: “Both students are innocent and I cannot say anything. It was planned and some days back there was a fight outside the school, but it was a minor fight.” |

Domestic help found dead
Panchkula, September 27 The deceased has been identified as Kusum (14), who was working as a maid at the house of Anil Arora, a resident of Sector 17. According to police reports, the girl was found hanging from the ceiling of the room on the first floor of the house when Seema, wife of Anil, went there. The parents of the girl live at Kaimbwala village in Chandigarh. The reason of death could be ascertained after the report of postmortem is received, said the police. The police is investigating the matter from the angle that the girl might have been feeling overburdened with the work at home. However, no suicide note was found. A case of employing an under age domestic help can be registered against the employer after verification of the deceased, said Panchkula superintendent of police Sandeep

Raghubir Singh, a resident of Sector 56, filed a complaint to the police that someone has stolen his Indica (CH-03X-9377) from his house on September 25. A case has been registered under Section 379 of the IPC at police station Sector-39.
Beaten
The police registered a case on the complaint filed by Neelam, a resident of Manimajra, that Gaurav and Ved Parkash, residents of Manimajra, beaten her at her residence on September 22. She was injured and admitted to the Manimajra health centre. A case under Sections 325, 34 has been registered at police station, Manimajra. The accused have been bailed out and police is investigating the case.
Theft
Pal Singh, a resident of Sector 25, filed a complaint to the police that Parmatma and Shamsunder, residents of Sector 25, had stolen one spare wheel and iron box from his three-wheeler (CH-04E-3148) and one battery of Tata-407 (PB-07F-4060) from his house on the night of September
25. A case under Sections 379, 411 has been registered at the police station Sector-11. Both have been arrested and stolen items were recovered from their possession.
Gambling
The police arrested Sonu and Ashok, both residents of Bapu Dham Colony, for gambling and seized Rs 500 from their possession. A case under Sections 13, 3, 67 of the Gambling Act has been registered at police station Sector-26. The police is still investigating the case. |
