Rich farmers turn style savvy

Lifestyle of the farming community of Punjab has undergone a complete change over the past few years. This was quite evident at the two-day Kisan Mela that concluded here today. Big swanky cars, flashy cell phones or branded footwear, you name it, and most rich farmers have it.
Once considered simple, today these countryside folks have gone hi-tech, are
educated and also more socially aware. Most of these farmers had come from
far-off places to participate in the mela like every year.

Khanna submerged
Khanna, September 19
Continuous rain since last night lashed the city and many low-lying areas were flooded with water today. Water also entered houses at many low-lying streets in various localities situated on Lalheri road.
People remain busy pumping out water and the shopkeepers sat idle without
customer the whole day. Traffic moved at snail’s pace and around a dozen minor
accidents were also reported on the GT Road due to non-functioning of traffic
lights.

Woman hacked to death by husband
Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 19
Sunita Rani of Sukhdev Singh Nagar here was killed by her husband at
Barnala. She was living with her parents but went to meet her husband ignoring her parent's warning and reached Barnala to meet him on Wednesday night.

The passengers at railway station here are, nowadays, facing problems as with just a fraction of the required licenced porters available, the rail travellers are made to carry their luggage themselves while boarding the trains.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has expressed serious concern over the housing problem in the city.
The executive committee of the party, which met here yesterday, observed that
the unprecedented and unwarranted rise in prices of land had made it impossible

Jaipal Singh, a resident of Kakrala Khurd village near Samrala, could not believe his luck when he won Rs 51 lakh in the Punjab state monthly lottery.
An employee of State Bank of India, Raikot, Jaipal said that he would spend the

Police station building awaits renovation

The building housing the local police station here has become unsafe for the inmates as well as the staff as the walls have developed cracks and roofs of some of the rooms have already caved in.
The walls of two lockups have developed huge cracks, making it easy for inmates
to flee. The plaster on the walls and bricks keep on falling, putting at risk
the lives of cops, inmates and people visiting the police station to register
their complaints.

Man electrocuted
Mullanpur Mandi, September 19
Fortyfive-year-old
Satpal, residing near the railway station, died due to electrocution today. Around 11 am when it was raining, there was sparking in the electric wires of his house. He was unaware of the leakage and died on the spot.

Stage show by Love Dale tiny tots
Ludhiana, September 19
Tiny tots of Love Dale Montessori took to the stage and spoke on various topic and themes of their choice. The topics included alphabets, fruits, colours and animals. To add fun to the activity, speakers were asked to dress according to the topics they choose to speak about. All children were given prizes at the end of the function.

City libraries in a deplorable condition

For a city that claims to be an educational hub does not have a district library of its own. People relate reading to academic context only. The Municipal Corporation has a couple of libraries to its credit but having lost sheen, these libraries are not only lying in a deplorable condition but also facing the problem of maintenance and shortage of books.
