In & Out
We haven’t seen her on the silver screen for quite some time now, but there is no way you can forget Mahima Choudhary — she is part of the cityscape
Jasmine Singh

Mahima is here….and she is here to stay. Even when you don’t find her in any of the ‘comeback’ movies, sharing space in an overcrowded frame or tele serials, more precisely reality shows, the bright and glowing actor is ‘so very’ alive in our mind. And we bet, you don’t have to rake your mind to conjure up an image of that effervescent, naïve small town girl who wasn’t interested in videshi culture. The Pardes girl is here to stay. In city for inauguration ‘G wild’ range of designer jewellery at A Jewels-19 and Johnnie Walker’s Formula One inspired fashion line party at Taj-17 on Sunday. We catch up with Mahima Choudhary to know whether it is not important to light up the screen with her presence off and on? After all, the audience has a short memory, Lady!

“That’s not true,” says Mahima. “If you have made a place for yourself through hard work, then there is no fear of being forgotten. Tomorrow if Dilip Kumar was to come to Chandigarh, I am sure you wouldn’t have any problem recalling who he is or why he isn’t seen in movies. And if you have made place in people’s heart, then for sure they wouldn’t forget you.”

Well, we must sat the actor has been lucky. After few hits and debacles, she is still around. At least her fans in Chandigarh get to see and read about her visit pretty often. You quiet like the city, we ask Mahima. “I do,” bang comes the reply. “I have very good friends in the city, which is a good enough reason for me to come here often.” “Also, she adds, this city is pretty eventful, it serves great food. The people are good and they make me feel special,” tells Mahima Choudhary, who is ready couple of movie scripts. “I haven’t really got anything that I would want to do.”

Bit she is definitely busy with other projects. Mahima has tied up with Formula One, Johnnie Walker, which is bringing us a Formula one experience. She is endorsing some brands and reading scripts. How about directing one, with so many actors doing that these days? “No plans as of now,” says the actor, looking gorgeous as usual.

But there is one thing that we cannot hold ourselves from asking. Bollywood is a place for the young and glamourous, (Of course, she fits the bill), where ‘comebacks’ are not very successful. Besides, the industry is burgeoning with new faces, new directors. Any insecurity? “Definitely not. Rather this is a good time to work in the industry. Every second week we get to see some good projects,” comes the reply. Adds Mahima, “Today, a little boy can pull off a hit film. Amitabh Bachchan is giving young actors a run for their money, a movie with freshers like Jaane Tu is a hit. So, I think it is ‘the’ time for Bollwood.”

No insecurity can ever bog her down. We wonder what keeps her going! “ Books. I am reading about celebrities who are non-actors like Donald Trump,” puts in the gossamer skinned actor. “I like this real estate businessman, and how he handles himself. Despite criticism, he hasn’t changed his hairstyle. And then there is Richard Branson, yet another amazing person.” Hey, are you planning to turn a businesswoman? “Tomorrow, if I start reading about dinosaurs, will I become one. No, I just like reading about such enterprising personalities.” Good one. No wonder, it makes you a positive soul.

Dress to heal
Feeling low? Just dab your favourite perfume, put on some makeup and slip into a sexy dress
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Good clothes surely boost confidence. A neat cut dress, elegant footwear, smart wristwatch is enough to make you feel good. Call it the magic of dressing up, it is a sure-shot formula to do away with the dowdy, unkempt alter ego that stares back at you in the mirror and makes you feel sorry for yourself.

“Dressing up in an elegant manner is a definite mood enhancer. It makes you look good and has a positive effect on your psyche,” says Sharon Sodhi, fashion designer from Sahron’s designer wear -18.

“For the feel-good factor one can team a halter top with tights or wear cigarette jeans with a kurti or a flowing kurta for a simple yet smart looking dress. Women can team a plain cotton salwar-kurta with a silk or georgette printed duppatta. Compliment it with pearl-drop earrings and a simple pearl bracelet. A lycra pyjama can be teamed with any smart cotton or georgette kurti for the trendy look.”

For Namisha, centre head, INIFD-8, clothes maketh a man. “You don’t need a Rohit Bal in your wardrobe to feel good. All the same, the clothes and the fabric has to be comfortable and well fitted to boost the confidence.” Namisha adds,“Lycra is stretchable, easy to maintain and fits your body well. They surely make one great addition in your wardrobe to look good. Skirts are another great option. They make you feel young and hide the body weight.”

Colours depict mood and it’s not only clothes that make you feel good but wearing some specific colour too pass of as great mood enhancers. “Colours like blue, beige, pink are good but when you want to feel great try fiery hues like red, crimson, orange and green as they are effective mood enhancers,” says Nidhi Gupta, fashion designer who runs her own line of fashion clothes called Sattvika-27.

Informing us about the colour patterns she says: “For us Indians, pink suits us all and surely perks up the frame of mind. Other than that, neutral shades like black and white need an attitude to carry them. One needs the right frame of mind to wear these colours as they are dull hues.”

Each colour has a story to tell and we all know that brighter shades have a positive effect on mind. But colour also depicts one’s personality. People who wear vivid hues are generally full of life and those who have a preference for dull and neutral hues are somewhat flat and boring.

And backing up the feel good factor, Simi Waraich, city-based psychologist says: “Definitely good clothes and vibrant hues augment the mood. Even if you look at biological evidence, babies are attracted to people with symmetrical faces. It’s a proven fact that kids respond readily to attractive faces but it’s not that if they do not have a beautiful mother they won’t respond. And to top it all, while we are growing up our conditioning is so that the child who is more attractive and dresses well, is given more importance. And this thing grows on us as we grow old.”

Talking about today she says: “Times have changed and more than national heroes as role models, we have actors as role models. And with physical attractiveness having become important, dressing up has gained lot more importance.”

Well that’s not all — hair, makeup and perfume too add to the list (especially if you are a lady!). So next time you are feeling low dab on your favourite perfume, put on some makeup and slip into your best dress.

Jack of all trades

After Chamku, Bobby Deol will feature in two more home productions and asserts the films made by his own banner gives him the liberty to play roles he has always wished to.

"Home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do unlike films by other producers.Bobby became pro-active during the making of his film and showed interest in pre-production, post-production and even the music making of Chamku, which was produced by his banner Vijayta Films Pvt. Ltd.

"The film is like my baby and I would want to do see to other departments of film making more often. I was involved with its shooting and post-production. I was like an apprentice on the job, learning about how to produce a film," said Bobby.

Like his father Dharmendra and elder brother Sunny, Bobby is now fully into family concerns but he is not ready to direct a film yet. "Though I've been part of this industry for years, I don't feel ready for directing a flick. I wish I can do it in the near future."

So what makes him ready for another film with his father, which is being directed by Sangeeth Sivan? "There's no other way we can come together on screen. It's the story of a father and son discovering each other during a journey. Also I'm doing an action-comedy with Sunny Deol. But it won't be just fun as we will be sharing a lot of emotional moments."

So what about outside offers, "Though I'm open to outside offers it's definitely more productive to do home productions where everything is under our control, especially when we have three in-house actors."

Saved in time

Actress Anne Hathaway's ex-boyfriend has pleaded guilty to scam charges, in which he impersonated as a Vatican official and cheated wealthy investors out of millions of dollars.

In fact, one of the targets of Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri, 30, was a friend of former US President Bill Clinton. Follieri dated the The Devil Wears Prada star for four years, and is now headed to prison after confessing to having committed wire frauds, money laundering and conspiracy during a hearing in New York. However, Hathaway dumped the entrepreneur shortly before his June arrest by the FBI. The Italian was accused of posing as the Vatican's representative to the US and promising investors big discounts on property belonging to the Roman Catholic Church.

The prosecutors said that instead of spending investors' money on church property, Follieri transferred all the funds to personal bank accounts. He is accused of using this money to fund "a lavish lifestyle" with his celebrity girlfriend involving private jets and an opulent Manhattan penthouse. However, the lawyers have not laid any charges against Hathaway. A forfeiture order requires him to give back the money in cash as well as jewellery, watches and other valuables recovered from an "individual".

She came to know about the disease when she was appearing on India's version of Big Brother and had to abruptly fly out of Mumbai to return home for treatment.

The mum of two has talked about having her womb removed on Living With Jade Goody, filmed before the surgery. "It's the equivalent of a heart transplant so it's a very, very serious operation. All my life I've been told I'm a pig and now I'm being cut open like one.

Goody's spokesperson Max Clifford said: "The operation went well. She's got the best people looking after her. She's had surgery, a radical hysterectomy and the operation lasted eight hours." He added: "I spoke to her last night and was trying to be positive but was obviously feeling very scared as any 27-year-old in that situation would." Goody will now start with a gruelling nine-week course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

BODY wise
JUST DO IT
10 REASONS, WHY YOU MUST EXERCISE
Sachin Kalra

Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than old-fashioned exercise. Not only does regular exercise aid in weight loss, it reduces your risk for several chronic diseases and conditions. Finding activities that you enjoy and that can become part of your daily routine is the key to a long and healthy life. The list of health benefits is impressive, and the requirements are simple - just do it.

Mood enhancer

Need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help you calm down. Exercise stimulates various brain chemicals, which may leave you happier and relaxed, and make you look and feel better. Exercise even reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.

Combat chronic diseases

Regular exercise can protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, non insulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain and osteoporosis. For overall health benefits, experts recommend 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic activity three or more times a week and some type of muscle strengthening activity and stretching at least twice a week.

Weight management

When you exercise, you burn calories. The more intensely you exercise, the more calories you burn - and the easier it is to keep your weight under control. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during your lunch break. Do jumping jacks during commercials. Take a brisk walk. Lastly, any physical activity you accumulate throughout the day helps you burn calories, too.

Strengthen heart and lungs

Feeling breathless while doing normal physical activity? Don't despair, regular exercise can leave you breathing easier. Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. In fact, regular exercise helps your entire cardiovascular system - the circulation of blood through your heart and blood vessels - work more efficiently. When your heart and lungs work better, you'll have more energy to do the things you enjoy and you won't be huffing either.

Sleep well

Exercise is sometimes the key to better sleep. A good night's sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. Researchers believe that morning exercise helps to set your body clock each day that makes you awake during the day and tired at night. Try it for a week and see the results.

Energy dose

Exercise is a great way to increase your energy level and fight off fatigue. Just a little exercise can really transform how you feel. Regular exercise can increase energy levels even among people suffering from chronic medical conditions associated with fatigue, like cancer and heart disease.

Spice up the sex life

Regular exercise can leave you feeling energised and looking better, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. Exercise improves your circulation, which can lead to more satisfying sex.

Brain wise

If you though Sudoku was a great brain workout, try playing tennis. Physical activity, especially sports requires a lot of participation from our brain. People who remain physically active as they age have a reduced risk of dementia and cognitive decline

Socialise

Exercise is a great way to meet people. There are plenty of group exercise activities that you can do that will give you both physical and social benefits.

Long live

Not only does exercise add years to your life, it also increases the number of years that you live without disease or disability. So live longer and live better by exercising.

Popping the pill
Can a diet pill actually replace a square meal?
Neha Walia

Are you still living under the charm of that little magic pill to lose weight? Or, are you those kinds who have time to work but no time to eat? Well, or just following the pill popping culture to the core? Whichever case it might be, the easiest answer to our meal replacement problems is a pill. Call it a trend or health consciousness, but give us one slight excuse and we are ready to pop it.

Resorting to diet pills is not an alien concept, what’s new is that these have become a regular sight in a majority of households. They act as a means for losing weight and nourish the body, so it is easy for the working women to cut on cooking time and pop one instead. Says Namrata Sharma, a professional from Panchkula: “I tried these pills initially as a quick weight loss fix. But now, sometimes, I take them as a substitute if I skip a meal.” Though she prefers a balanced meal everyday, but they come in handy when you forget to eat,” she says.

Agreed, we all dream of a pill that would allow us to eat anything and still remain slim, but if you eat healthy food, you don’t need to take the pill in the first place. Feels Dr Sudha Khurana: “The idea of a meal replacement is to replace a solid meal with shakes, fruits and energy food. This doesn’t mean pills can be used as a proxy for your regular diet.” Right. You can take pills to suppress your appetite but not completely eliminate it! “There are healthy ways of curbing your hunger,” says Dr Khurana. “Natural fruits, vegetables and grains are rich in fiber content. They get absorbed slowly and satisfy your hunger pangs,” she adds.

Though meal supplements come with a promise of fulfilling your daily requirements, there is always a risk involved. Once you start taking these, you may get hooked. Says Dr Sonia Gandhi, diet consultant at Fortis, Mohali, “Regular intake of diet pills can be harmful. However, meal replacements offer an alternative to other more conventional dietary treatments and may prove beneficial for some people in weight loss. But when replacing them for your meals, one can suffer from eating disorders and hypertension.”

While using these pills, one needs to understand both the side of the coin. No matter what our reason of logic be behind using these pills, but before you pop a pill to save time and energy, remember you may be reducing one more day of healthy living.
