Now, tee off under lights
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, September 14
The greens came alive as the floodlit Chandigarh Golf Club course began a regular weekly night golf activity for its members who were there in large numbers to avail of the facility this evening.

Colourful lights on the water feature at the 18th hole greeted those who arrived late to see those who had teed off with the inaugural tee shot by the club president, D.S. Bains.

Sunday night was the first major night of golf activity. According to the captain of the course, Brig Bath, the club had decided to provide night golf facility to members every Friday. “In fact, today's event was the first of the series,” he said.

The first night golf event attracted more than 60 members and the weather was just right for the night competition as the club president made the formal tee off.

This appeared the first major attempt to promote night golf after the two-day competition to promote golf tourism
played on the Chandigarh Golf Club greens on May 8 and 9.

The first major night golf competition saw more than 30 diplomats from the US Embassy, Canadian High Commission and corporate and travel and tourism executives in action on the Chandigarh greens.

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd) wanted to bring Chandigarh on the night golf map of the country.

Bains said night golf would not only be popularised for members but also for tourists who wish to avail this facility. He said the greens of the club would be available to tourism and travel agencies on prior booking on Fridays.

"The club greens will be available on any other night provided the travel and tourism agency has a minimum of 40 interested golfers for the night,” said Bains.

Golf tourism has been a major plank of Chandigarh tourism director Vivek Atray. So far, three tournaments have been held by the Chandigarh Golf Association and the Chandigarh Tourism Department which attracted NRIs, diplomats and corporate executives to the greens of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Chandimandir.
