MPs to donate for Bihar flood relief
Ambala, September 9 This was today informed by minister of state for urban employment and poverty elevation Selja. In Ambala Cantonment to lay the foundation stone for the construction of houses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), she stated the money contributed from the MPLAD funds will be used for building infrastructure and homes for those who have lost their houses in floods in Bihar. Under the JNNURM scheme, Rs 11.43 crore will be spent to build 423 dwelling units. The ownership rights of these units will lie with women, while both men and woman can also have joint rights. Commenting on the frequent problem of power cuts, she stated the matter had been taken up with the state government. |

Teachers’ body protests Rohtak incident

Kharar, September 9 While addressing the gathering today, Sukhbir asserted electorates of providing municipal area drinking water supply and sewerage facilities. “The priority of our government is to provide clean and safe potable water to every household and we will abide by this,” he said. He stressed upon the need of pure water, sewerage connections and other basic amenities for the area. “Kharar city has not got the kind of development it deserved and this is all due to the lack of devotion of the Congress towards people,” he said. 500 saplings planted
Bassi Pathana, September 9 A sapling-plantation drive in and around the village was also launched. Area manager of the company Ashok Sharma inaugurated the function while development officer G.S. Rana presided over. Dr Kulwinder Singh from the horticulture department was the key speaker. Hundreds of farmers from the neighbouring villages attended the function. As many as 500 saplings were planted in the town. Saplings were also distributed among the farmers. Sharma said the company had decided to make people aware of the increasing pollution level. He said the company had adopted Saheedgarh village to make a beginning. He announced an initial grant of Rs 1 lakh for the village. Dr Kulwinder Singh said the level of pollution had reached an alarming stage and if appropriate steps were not taken immediately, the coming generations would have to suffer and they would not spare us for that. |

Girl power in village games
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 9 The girls’ teams are participating in these games after a gap of 10 years. “The number of girls participating in the games has increased this year,” said district sports officer Suman Bala Verma. She added that three women hockey teams have been formed from the five blocks of the district. The first and second position holders in the block-level games have been selected to participate in the district-level games, she added. All the five blocks of district - Khera, Khamano, Bassi, Sirhind and Amloh - are participating in the village games. The newly-appointed deputy commissioner, Surjit Singh Dhillon, would give away the prizes during the concluding function on Thursday. |
Kidney Case
Chandigarh, September 9 Justice Ranjit Singh also remanded the case back to the trial court for first recording the evidence of an expert in the matter, and then assessing the situation to see if sufficient material was available on record to summon him. In his detailed order, Justice Ranjit Singh asked the trial court to examine various judgments by the Apex Court in related matters before reaching a conclusion. Dr Sareen, along with others, is also an accused in the kidney scam. In the current case, he had earlier placed on record the HIV test report of the donor. It was added that the complainant in the case - the patient’s father - had stated before the trial court that the donor was not subjected to HIV test before surgery. The statement was false and baseless. The FIR for death due to rash and negligent act, along with other offences, was registered in the matter under Section 304-A and 384 of the IPC at Civil Lines police station in Amritsar on July 24, 1995, after patient Balwinder Kumar’s death. The case was registered on the complaint of his father Mehar Chand. He had stated that a kidney was initially donated to 21-year-old Balwinder Singh by the mother. But after the patient developed complications at a later stage, the kidney of one Jagmohan was transplanted on August 26, 1992. It was only later the family came to know that Jagmohan was suffering from AIDS. As a result, the infection was transmitted to Balwinder Singh, who expired on |

CFA outplay Mohun Bagan to lift AC Cup
Chandigarh, September 9 CFA started with K.C. Lalchhuanmawia who gave Mohun Bagan a harrowing time through his eye-pleasing moves. However, speedy Pankaj Negi stole the show by scoring a brace. He also had a hand in the CFA’s first goal. Initiating a move from the right flank, Pankaj sent a measured minus to Gagandeep Singh who made no mistake by placing the ball from close range in smooth action. With two goals up, the CFA players proved their mettle. They were awarded a free kick on the right flank. K.C. Lalchhuanmawia’s measured 20-yard floater found the Mohun Bagan rooted at one place as the ball hit the net. In the second half, Mohun Bagan’s efforts proved abortive as they failed to score another goal. Though Mohun Bagan’s well-built Pritam Singh did create a few openings, the other forwards failed to make use of his supply. CFA all set for Subroto Cup quarterfinal
Chandigarh, September 9 Today, it was party time for them as they managed the fourth triumph in six tournaments in the 6th Administrator’s Challenge Cup All-India Football Tournament. They remained invincible in the whole series. Soon after winning the cup with the cash prize of 50,000, the sports administration invited all the players for a dinner party at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, and their coaches are too giving them a feast in Hot Millions. “The win has come as a morale booster for the players and they are now geared up for their quarterfinal in Suborto Cup for which we are leaving on September 11,” said Gurpreet, coach of the team. “We have toiled hard during the tournament and that’s why we remained undefeated in the whole series,” says an excited player of the CFA. “The credit should go to the coaches as well as they are giving their utmost to the team and I don’t find much difference between the coaches of our academy and foreign coaches except the techniques,” quips another player of CFA. Appreciating the efforts of the coaches, director, sports, I.S. Sandhu, said, “All the coaches worked in coordination. We are learning a lot from German coach Andre Kuenh. He watches every match seriously to analyse each player’s performance and works on all the areas of the game.” Meanwhile, the players of other teams appreciated the respect and hospitality extended towards them by the Chandigarh sports department. “We are provided good food and accommodation here,” said a player of Tamil Nadu Football Association. “The faculties provided to the players are praiseworthy. Irina, Saaniya to miss Women’s Pro Golf Tour
Chandigarh, September 9 The first of the eight legs will be held on the greens of the Delhi Golf Club from September 10 to 12. Being played under the aegis of the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), the 2008-09 tour will visit eight golf courses, including the Panchkula Golf Club (October 10 to 12) and the Chandigarh Golf Club (October 14 to 18) in which Indian women golf professionals will compete for a total prize money of Rs 13.50 lakh, with the winner of each leg pocketing Rs 50,000. The cash prizes will be for the top eight positions in each leg. Last season’s order of merit winner Simi Mehra joins the tour from the 2nd leg onwards that will be played at the Qutab Golf Course (September 17 to 19). The other Chandigarh golfer Saaniya Sharma (last year’s rookie of the year) will also be missing out from the competition as she is recuperating after surgery. Unique to the first leg will be the Pro-AM competition that will be played concurrently over the three days and 54 holes. Horse-cart rider crushed under rods
Chandigarh, September 9 The incident took place this afternoon near Iron & Steel Market, Sector 29, here. A resident of Valmiki Colony, Phase-6, Mohali, Deva was a bachelor. Shaken by the incident, a witness Rakesh Kumar said, “Deva lost his life on the spot. I was looking at this young man riding the cart very well. Suddenly, his cart lost balance and overturned.” The police reached the spot and rushed the deceased to a hospital. Sub-inspector Nirmal Sharma said, “We removed the heavy iron rods and took him to Sector-16 hospital soon after the accident but he was declared brought dead.” He said, “Such incidents occurs due to overloading of the cart. If the cart was not overloaded, then the chances of the deceased’s survival were bright.” |

Youth’s body found behind hospital
Panchkula, September 9 The deceased identified as Sri Chand was staying at the hospital to take care of his relative Ram Krishan, who was admitted to the hospital. While Sri Chand was running a grocery shop at Raipur Rani, his father Sohan Lal is a conductor with Haryana Roadways. According to the police, Sri Chand and his uncle Shiv Kumar were staying at the hospital to take care of Ram Krishan who was admitted three days ago when he was electrocuted at Raipur Rani. Ram Krishan is the brother of Sri Chand’s grandfather Muni Lal, an
ex-sarpanch Shiv Kumar informed the police that Sri Chand had gone out of the hospital around 9 pm, along with some of his friends, and returned late night. After returning at the hospital, he went to sleep on the first floor where Ram Krishan was admitted and in the morning his body was found lying on the ground floor on the back of the hospital. The police, however, ruled out foul play and registered a case under Section 174 Cr PC and sent the body for postmortem. |

Senior citizen booked for ‘manhandling’ cop
Chandigarh, September 9 Claiming that the senior citizen, Phool Chand Sood, a retired general manager of Coal India Limited, manhandled and misbehaved with a traffic police head constable, Ram Kumar, who was on duty at the Sector 17 bus stand chowk, the police slapped a non-bailable offence on him. The fact has been contradicted by Jatinder Sehgal, chairman of the Haryana chapter of the Indian Institute of Architect, who was accompanying Sood in his car. SP (traffic) H.S. Doon said DSP (traffic) J.S. Cheema was sent to the spot and “whatever we have done is as per the law”. “The head constable got irritated when we insisted on writing in the challan book that we are signing in protest. In the ensuing moments, the constable made a big issue when Sood insisted on taking a copy of the challan to make the payment of the offence to driver without the seat belt. It is not the way senior citizens are treated,” Sehgal claimed. The police in a statement claimed that Sood forcibly took the challan book, got hold of the collar of the head constable and tore the challan book. However, the car occupants stated that the police has made an issue out of nothing and was acting vindictive to teach them a lesson. A police official claimed that Sood was threatening them by dropping names of senior Haryana government officials. The police, however, has witnesses to prove its point. Sood would be produced in the court tomorrow. A case under Sections 186, 332, 353 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Sood in Sector 17 police station. |

Call-girl racket busted, 5 women held
Chandigarh, September 9 The police received a tip-off that a few prostitutes and pimps were stationed opposite the railway station near hotel Royal Plaza at Darua. The police formed a team to conduct the raid. The police was accompanied with Anuradha Gupta, member, Chandigarh Welfare Advisory Board. A decoy as well as shadow witnesses were prepared for the raid. The marked currency notes were handed over to the decoy customer and briefed On receipt of a prefixed signal, the police party swooped on the women and the pimps who were soliciting the customers for prostitution at public place. Two of the arrested women belong to Unnao district (UP), two belong to Batala in Punjab and one belongs to Jalandhar. The pimps included owner and manager of hotel Royal Plaza where the trade was allegedly going on. A case under Section 7 & 8 of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act 1956 has been registered at the Industrial Area police station. |

Against an average bill of Rs 2,000, a bill of Rs 24,000 was issued to him. “The Lineman after taking bribe of Rs 2,000, returned to disconnect my connection”, he alleged.
