Janmashtami celebrations: Tiny-tots of various schools of this town celebrated Shri Krishna Janmashtmi on Saturday. Fancy dress and dance competitions were held at Mothers Pride School, Alpine Institute of School Education, Flower Valley Public School and Guru Nanak AV School to mark the day.

Youth electrocuted: One Jaswinder Singh (18) was electrocuted at village Mehalkalan Sodhi on Friday. He was trying to fix some electricity snag at his residence when he accidentally touched a naked wire and suffered an electric shock. He was taken to local civil hospital, where the doctors referred him to DMC Ludhiana but he succumbed to his injuries.
Compensation postponed: Deputy commissioner R.L. Mehta informed that the distribution of compensation for the potato crops that were damaged in January this year has been postponed due to some unavoidable reasons. Compensation was to be distributed between August 25 and August 29. The next date for distribution would be announced shortly, he added.

PO held with weapon: The police has arrested Manjit Singh, proclaimed offender (PO), who has been involved in a number of terrorist-related activities during the heydays of militancy in this district. Lok Nath Angra, SSP, in a press note issued here on Friday said a 32-bore revolver had been recovered from his possession. He said a new case against Manjit, who was involved in about five criminal cases, had been registered under Section 25, Arms Act, at Dhariwal police station.MALERKOTLA
4 players honoured: Four players of Sohrab Public School were honoured by Amjad Ali, chairman, Harf Charitable Trust, at a function held at Sohrab Mills here on Saturday. The players had won medals in the 22nd National Kick Boxing Championship organised by the West Bengal Kick Boxing Association in Kolkata. Out of the four players Mohammed Anwar had bagged a gold medal and Mohammed Azam a silver. Dawinder and Sarfraz also played very well.
2 women murdered:Two women Veena Devi (34) and Rinku Devi (21) of Darbanga, Bihar, were murdered by some unidentified persons at their residence behind Gulzar Hospital here on Saturday morning. In the same incident, Rajesh Kumar, a migrant labourer of UP, sustained major injuries. A police party, led by Sangrur SP(D) Bhupinderjit Singh Virk and local DSP Gurpreet Singh Sikand, reached the spot and admitted the seriously injured Rajesh to the local Civil Hospital.

7-year-old killed: A seven-year-old child was killed during quarrying at Nikku Nangal village on Saturday. The child was trying to extract mud from a mound for the construction of his house, when the mud fell on him. His father Karam Singh is a daily-wager and mother Reena Rani a housewife.

AWWA celebrations end: The Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) week-long celebrations concluded at Mamun Military Station here on Saturday. It was inaugurated by president, Gurj AWWA, Kirti Vardhan on Monday. During the week events like free medical check-up camp, tree plantation, competitions in drawing, mehandi, singing and dancing were conducted. More than 10,000 servicemen with families participated.

Youth shot dead: The body of a 24-year-old youth, Sarbjit Singh of Janta Nagar, Dhuri, was found from the bridge of Rajomajra drain near Dhuri on Friday night. Dhuri DSP Swarn Singh said on Saturday that Sarbjit had been shot dead. A case against unknown persons under Sections 302 and 34,

Repair of GT Road: The repair work of the local portion of the G.T. Road started here on Saturday. Khushi Ram, DC, said the work would be done at a cost of Rs 27 lakh and be completed within one month.
