Beijing Olympics
Big day for Vijender, Jitender today
Ravi Dhaliwal

Patiala, August 19
Tomorrow is Vijender Kumar’s date with destiny. He, along with his Haryana colleague Jitneder Kumar, will be testing the waters at Beijing tomorrow and with both the pugilists fully charged up, a medal of any hue may just be on the way for India.

One thing about Vijender is sure. He is not like that Greek mythological creature - Icarus - the one who flew too close to the sun and got its wings burnt. The Bhiwani plays to his limitations and does not take too many undue risks in the ring.

Experts feel that unlike Akhil, who sometimes became more aggressive than what was needed of him, Vijender carries a cool head on his broad shoulders. “More importantly, his feet are firmly placed on the ground and his head is not in the clouds,” revealed a senior boxing coach. Vijender will square off against his rival from Ecuador, Carlos Gongora, who is ranked world No. 9. Boxing experts feel that despite the fact that Vijender has beaten more experienced rivals in the run up to the Beijing Olympics, yet it will not be a cakewalk for him in the quarterfinal bout.

Speaking from Beijing with tremendous confidence, Vijender said, “I know I am on the cusp of creating history for my country. After Akhil’s loss yesterday, it has become all the more important for me and Jitender to do well. I have seen and studied videos of my opponent and have chalked out a plan with the help of my coaches G.S. Sandhu and Cuban coach B.I.J Fernandez. Still some things have to be left to fate and if God is kind enough tomorrow, I may sail through to the last-four stage without much worries.”

Senior boxing coach Harpreet Singh, at whose centre Vijender and Jitender used to train whenever the boxers needed a `venue change’ from the National Institute of Sports (NIS) here, says: “ Unlike Akhil, who needlessly resorted to bouts of aggression, Vijender is a cool character. His footwork is good and he uses space in the ring to his advantage. He is one of the most clean and balanced boxers I have ever seen. The manner is which he trampled the Thai boxer 13-3 in the pre-quarterfinal only suggests that a medal for him is not out of reach.”

While Vijender will square off against Carlos Gongora in the 75 kg weight class, Jitender Kumar will test his skills against three-time European champ Georgy Balakshin of Russia in the 51 kg category.

Brunei Open
Johl to lead Chandigarh challenge
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, August 19
Thirtynine-year-old Amandeep Johl will lead the Chandigarh challenge in the $3 lakh Brunei Open Asian Tour event which gets under way on the lush greens of Empire Hotel and Country Club at Jerudong in Brunei on Thursday.

Armed with a new swing, Amandeep is one of the three Chandigarh golfers among the 10 Indians vying for the cash prizes at stake. "The rhythm in my swing was missing. I have got it back," said Amandeep when he was in Chandigarh recently.

Amandeep had so far received training under Italian swing guru Donato Diponziano. But when in Chandigarh, he was under the tutelage of Jessie Grewal, the only grade A teaching professional in the region.

Jessie Grewal has managed to do a clean-up of Amandeep's swing. The compensations have been eliminated. "And if Amandeep manages to achieve perfection in his natural swing, he could be a major challenger in the major pro events. These will include the China Open, Brunei Open, Malaysia Open, Hong Kong Open, Indian Open and Singapore Open," said Jesse during a chat at the Chandigarh Golf Range.

Besides Harmeet Kahlon and Gurbaaz Mann from Chandigarh, another golfer from the region, 20-year-old Gaganjeet Bhullar from Kapurthala, will be seen in action in the tournament to be played from August 21 to 24.

Thirtyfour-year-old Chinese Taipei's Lin Wen-tang is aiming to become the first man to win back-to-back titles at Brunei, where he will be challenged by top names like Thai star Thawom Wiratchant, in-form Malaysian Ben Leong and former champions Terry Pilkadanis of Australia and compatriot Wang Ter-chang. Gaurav Ghei from Delhi is also capable of upsetting the applecart of top golfers on the given day.

Other Indian golfers in the fray are Rahil Gangjee, Anirban Lahiri, Himmat Singh Rai, Ranjit Singh Rathore and Naman Dawar.

After sponsoring the open heart surgery project for the poor, Rotary Club, Chandigarh, in association with the Advanced Eye care Centre (AEC) of the PGI, launched the “Gift of Sight” project here today to help those who need treatment for retinal disorder.

The decision was based on the positive response to the 'Rotary Heartline' project launched nine years back to help poor heart patients.
