Subway construction hangs fire
Our Correspondent

Ambala, August 17
The unanticipated delay in the construction of a subway on an abandoned rail level crossing near Aggarsain Chowk in Ambala City has caused great resentment among local Congress workers and general public. This subway is the most urgent need of the local residents as the traffic generally remains blocked on the adjoining railway overbridge.

President of the Ambala Youth Congress Ajay Saini has threatened that if the Ambala railway authorities did not start its construction at the earliest, the party workers would gherao the divisional railway manager at Ambala Cantonment. He said this subway would benefit thousands of city residents.

Around three years back, the railway ministry had approved the construction of this subway on the condition that the state government would bear its expenditure. Two and half years back, the PWD department had deposited Rs 1.72 crore with the Ambala Railway division for its construction. Local MLA Venod Sharma was the PWD minister at that time.

Strangely, the Ambala railway authorities have not even completed the tender procedure for the construction so far. On one pretext or the other, the railway authorities have been delaying the construction work. A railway official clarified that they had invited the tenders twice but none of the contractors turned up. This plea of the railway authorities does not convince the local people. The residents believe that there could be some pressure behind the delay, best known to the railway authorities.

Union minister and local MP Sailja, at a public function around two months back, had said she would take up the matter on priority basis and the construction of the subway would be started soon. Despite that the railway authorities did not take any action in this regard.

Tribune News Service

Patiala, August 17
Indian pugilists have made the nation proud by defeating world renowned boxers one by one. “Not only Bhivani residents, but each and every individual of the country is praying for their victory,” believes Harpreet Singh, Patiala district boxing coach.

He lauded the efforts of the players saying that they had created a niche for boxing in India. “Earlier, boxing did not enjoy this much popularity but these guys have really made it big this time,” he added.

Harpreet Singh, who trains at multi-purpose school, had been earlier coaching Indian squad for 10 years. He said, “Before going for Olympics, these boys would often come to my training centre to get a feel of diverse venues and to get used to the spectators. They were very confident and were determined to make it big and that is what has made the difference.” He further said, “It’s not that there was less exposure earlier or the training techniques were inferior, it’s just that, this time, these boys were psychologically programmed to think only of victory. I am sure this determination will take them really ahead.”

When asked about medal hopes, he immediately named Akhil and Vijender. He said both of them were very smart and composed players. “They are aggressive when they want to be and smart enough not to commit any mistake in aggression. I am sure of their victory. As far as Jitender is concerned, he is a very talented child. Let’s hope he makes himself and the nation proud,” he added.

Roads in town cry for attention
Surinder Bhardwaj

Bassi Pathana, August 17
The roads of the town are in worst possible conditions. The rain water proved havoc for the roads as well as for the residents.

There are numerous deep potholes on the roads and travelling on most of the roads has become a nightmare. Let alone driving, it is difficult to even walk on these roads. With no system for drainage of rain and sewer water, the roads are over-flowing causing a great loss.

The rainy water has destroyed Chandigarh-Bassi Pathana and Bassi Pathana-Khamano roads.

These roads are littered with pits with some of them as deep as two feet, thus causing great risk and inconvenience to the pedestrians as well as the vehicles.

The accidents, after sunset, have become a routine matter.

The vehicles of those unknown to the area, often fall in deep pits.

Various social organisations have urged deputy commissioner to direct the PWD department to initiate repair work immediately as well as to lay premix on these roads.
