Admn on alert as Ghaggar swells
Ratia (Fatehabad), August 17 Sources said the flow of water in the Ghaggar river was 11,000 cusecs today, which was 3,000 cusecs more than yesterday’s level. The water level was 8,100 cusecs yesterday and 6,500 cusecs on Friday. The authorities concerned are, however, relieved over the news that the water level of the Ghaggar river in the upstream at Gulha Cheeka, where the flow of water was 35,000 cusecs on Saturday, has come down by 30 per cent today. This means that in case there are no more rains in the catchments areas, the water level will come down here too. SDM Munish Nagpal said the immediate threat of floods had been averted, as there had been a considerable decrease in the flow of water in the upstream of the Ghaggar river today. He said the authorities concerned were well prepared to meet the eventuality of floods. He said the authorities had more than 15,000 gunny bags ready with them. One JCB machine and two cranes were also available with the authorities, he said. Nagpal said a meeting of officers of all departments concerned, including health, public health, animal husbandry, irrigation and revenue, was convened yesterday to review the preparations. |

‘Shaheedi samagam’ has cops on toes
Sirsa, August 17 The “shaheedi samagam” is being organised by Sikh organisations exactly a month after Harminder Singh, a Sikh, was killed at Dabwali after an altercation over “naam charcha”. Sardulgarh is about 30 km from Sirsa and any development there can have its repercussion in the district, where the situation is already unpredictable. Although the Sikh organisations have been projecting the programme as a religious congregation, they have also announced that they will honour the families of Kamaljit Singh, who was killed in a dera-Sikh clash at Sunam, Balkar Singh, who was killed at Mulund (Mumbai), and Harminder Singh, who died recently at Dabwali, at a samagam after the religious congregation. Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh, Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, Sant Harnam Singh Ghumman of Damdami Taksal, Sant Baljit Singh Daduwal of the Khalsa Action Committee, Sant Sukhwinder Singh Khalsa of the Shri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Sabha and Sant Daler Singh Kherwal are among prominent Sikh leaders who will participate in the samagam. Due to its proximity to the venue of the congregation, the organisers of the function are expecting a good turnout from this district. Sikh leaders, who have been spearheading a tirade against the dera, have been actively campaigning in villages for mobilising support from this district. Though the police deployment in the district has never been relaxed after the Dabwali incident, tomorrow’s convention has put the authorities on an alert. The police has intensified barricading of roads and checking at these barriers have also been strengthened. Police sources said they had been taking all precautions in view of the congregation and though there would be no restriction on the movement of people, the checking on barricades for weapons and other objectionable items would be intensified. |

else. Mookhy regretted that even though the country was celebrating Dhingra’s centenary, the government had not established even a single national level institution in his memory. Punjab health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla said there was an urgent need for keeping the new generation tied to their cultural roots.
