Frowns and smiles as rain sweeps city
Amritsar, August 5
The downpour this morning gave city residents the much-needed respite from the oppressive weather. However, the heavy rainfall inundated the city’s low-lying areas and exposed the poor drainage system. Knee-deep water was seen on many roads. A choked sewerage in many low-lying areas threw normal life out of gear. A large number of schools in the city were forced to close due to low attendance.

Building mess: Master plan can bail out city

The burgeoning commercial activity concentrated in a few areas like Mall Road, Lawrence Road, Madan Mohan Malvia Road, Albert Road and now Court Road is no doubt adding to the woes of the area residents.

The allegation of rape made against a sub-inspector by a woman was proved to be false. It was found that the woman had made the allegation to save herself from being booked in a case of beating up of a adolescent girl a few days ago.

State doles out 5-lakh grant to Pingalwara
Amritsar, August 5
Information and public relations minister Bikram Singh Majithia today announced a donation of Rs 5 lakh for the inmates of the All-India Pingalwara Charitable Society. Majithia also promised to give Rs 1 lakh annually from his personal resources and income as gesture to do something for society, needy and poor being looked after by the society.

Controversial former general secretary of the Durgiana Tirath Rajinder Bhalla was remanded in three-day judicial custody and was sent to jail after he surrendered in the court of K.K. Jain on Monday.

Youth shoots self riding pillion on bike

Manjit Kumar, son of a former police inspector and resident of Gurbax Nagar, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with the licenced revolver of his friend while riding pillion on a motorcycle near Sant Francis School here last evening.

Labourer ‘raped’, son drowns in nullah
Amritsar, August 5
A Rajasthani labourer alleged that she was gang raped by four persons and while she was being molested, her one-and-a-half-year-old son fell into a nearby nullah and drowned in the Chatiwind area today.

Philanthropist passes awayDaleep Singh
Amritsar, August 5
Leading industrialist, social worker and philanthropist Daleep Singh (87) died after a prolonged illness here yesterday. A large number of social, voluntary and educational organisations mourned the death of Daleep Singh who had been associated with Chief Khalsa Dewan, Rotary Club and other societies in the city.
