Jalandhar, July 24
Marriage celebrations of a colleague turned sour for five travelling ticket examiners (TTEs) who were attacked by six persons at Chugitti Chowk in wee hours of this morning. The victims were attacked with sharp-edged weapons and allegedly robbed of Rs 10,000 and a car.

According to information, the five TTEs, Kuljit Singh Mangat, R.S. Randhawa (athletics), S.P. Singh, Ranjit Singh (hockey players) and Sanjiv Marwaha, all international-level players, were returning from Khanna in an Indica car after attending a colleague’s wedding. They were on their way to Amritsar when they had some altercations with Mandeep Singh, a resident of Khajurla village, outside a food joint after their cars brushed on side.

The TTE group drove away from the scene but had to stop at Chugitti due to a technical snag in the vehicle. In the meantime, Mandeep along with his five friends got hold of them when they were resting inside their car at Chugitti.

Talking to The Tribune, Randhawa said, “We were sleeping in our car when Mandeep and his five men armed with swords and daggers attacked us. They chopped finger-tips of Kuljit’s hand, while Ranjit sustained head injuries. I and S.P. Singh too were hurt.” He alleged that the assailants drove away with their car and Rs 10,000.

SHO Balbir Singh said the police was able to nab Mandeep because the victims had noted his car number which helped in tracing him. The stolen Indica car was also recovered 3 km away from the crime scene. He said a case under section 394 of the IPC has been registered against Mandeep and five unidentified assailants.

Nawanshahr, July 24
Democratic Teachers Front president Bhupinder Singh Warraich, in a press statement here on Thursday, criticised the state government for depriving the recently-promoted school lecturers of the right to get the station of their choice.

“Education minister Upinderjit Kaur had promised that the promoted school lecturers would be allotted stations of their choice at a meeting with the Sarkari School Bachao, Sikhiya Bachao Manch on February 20 in the presence of the education secretary and DPI (S),” said Warraich while lamenting that the education minister and the senior officials of the education department had not kept their word.

Warraich warned that a statewide stir would be launched if the government did not mend its policy in accordance with the promise made.

He also criticised the state government for abandoning the office of the district education officer (DEO), Nawanshahr. For the last three months, the office is functioning without the DEO.

“The state government has neither posted any one as DEO here nor given the additional charge of Nawanshahr to any other district education officer. In the absence of the officer, the salaries of the teachers, the endorsement of promotion orders, transfer orders etc. are lying pending,” he added.

Don’t disgrace Ram Setu by questioning its existence: Sud
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, July 24
Punjab parliamentary affairs minister Tikshan Sud has questioned the legal sanctity of the affidavit submitted by the UPA government on Ram Setu.

In a statement issued here today, Sud said, “The UPA is being headed by an Italian-born Catholic lady and they were disgracing Lord Rama and his religion by questioning Ram Setu’s existence.” He added that the step had hurt the religious sentiments of billions of Hindus.

The BJP leader said the UPA government was already on ventilator as it had survived with the support of those MPs who cross-voted. Therefore, the UPA had no legal and constitutional right to take any major decision, especially those hurting the feelings of majority of Indians.

Issuing a warning to the UPA, Sud said any action by the government affecting the holy structure would be resisted by crores of Hindus. “The UPA is issuing a contradictory affidavit on the historic and mythological facts to create confusion under a well-planned strategy and the BJP would not allow it,” he added.

Demanding immediate dismissal of the UPA, Sud said President Pratibha Patil should immediately dismiss the central government and order a general election before the UPA could inflict more damage.

He said the President should also summon the tape of a sting operation by IBN-7 showing the Samajwadi Party offering money to BJP MPs for voting in favour of the UPA government and order registration of a criminal case against the guilty.
