2 killed, 1 injured in accident

Rajpura, July 22
Two youths were killed and one was injured when the car they were travelling in met with an accident late last night.

While Gurjant Singh (26), a resident of Hasanpur Kaironpur near Rajpura, and Randhir Singh Dheera (25), a resident of Mahima village, died on the spot Gurvinder Singh Bhatia (28), a resident of Banur, sustained serious injuries. The condition of the injured is serious. He is undergoing treatment at the PGI.

The accident took place at around 10.30 pm when the trio was on its way to Banur from Rajpura. An unidentified vehicle hit their car near Shamdhu village in Rajpura. The boys kept on lying in their vehicle for nearly one hour before the help came. Some passerby informed the police and their relatives who rushed them to hospital.

The boys were looking after agricultural lands in their respective villages for the past sometime. A case in this connection has been registered at the city police station, Rajpura.

14 AC mandis to come up soon: Lakhowal

Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, chairman, Punjab Mandi Board, today said 14 new air-conditioned mandis would be set up in the state.

Lakhowal, who was addressing a press conference at the circuit house, said this was being done to help vegetable growing farmers in the state. He added that a lab had been set up at Kisan Bhawan in Chandigarh which would facilitate the setting up of link roads in rural areas of the state.

Lakhowal added that as compared to last year, there had been an increase of 16.70 per cent in the mandi market fee and which was this year pegged at Rs 110 crore. Apart from this, the board had collected Rs 13 crore as fine from various sources, he said.

He further stated that 1,700 more link roads would be set up this year across the state. He reiterated that those link roads that had a lifespan of six years would be given priority.

He added that in the entire state of Punjab, there were 1,600 purchase centres out of which 1,500 were cemented while the other 100 would be given a concrete shape soon.

To a query, Lakhowal said in order to press for the demands of the farmers, people from across the state would gherao the Parliament for an unspecified period from August 4. He also said the MSP of wheat and paddy should be given in accordance with the findings of the Swaminathan report.

He criticised the central government’s decision to waive farmers’ debt saying that the decision helped just one per cent farmers of the state.

Demand for SGPC
Sikh leaders’ protest on

Ambala, July 22
The Sikh leaders, demanding a separate SGPC for Haryana, continued their relay hunger strike for the 12th day in front of the residence of HPCC chief Phool Chand Mulana in Ambala City today.

The Sikh leaders from Sirsa and Dabwali sat on the dharna. They raised slogans against the state government for not fulfilling its promise.

President of the proposed separate SGPC Jagdish Singh Jhanda said the relay hunger strike would continue till July 27. He said during the last assembly elections, Congress leaders had promised them that if they came to power, a separate SGPC would be constituted for the state.

He said the state government had constituted a committee under the leadership of a senior minister, Harmohinder Singh Chatha, to seek the opinion of the Sikh community in this regard. He demanded that the report of the Chatha Committee be released soon.

Tinku is Morinda MC chief again

Vijay Kumar Tinku has been elected president of the Morinda municipal council for the second time. Earlier, he was the MC president from 1992 to 1997.

Tinku said he would take up the sewerage laying work in the city on a war footing.

He added that the beautification and cleanliness of the city and provision of potable drinking water for all would be his top priorities. The MC would also recommend upgradation of the present rural government dispensary to an urban one, he added.

Shivam steers Vivek to victory

An all-round performance by Shivam Bhambri, scoring 52 runs and claiming two wickets for 5 runs, helped Vivek High School, Sector 38 B, Chandigarh, to beat St John’s School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, by 88 runs during the Vivek Trophy Twenty20 Inter-School Cricket Tournament, 2008.

The tournament is being organised by Twenty20 Cricket Association of Chandigarh and Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy, at Vivek High School, Sector 38 B, here today.

Vivek High School won the toss and elected to bat first. They compiled a score of 154 runs in 20 overs after losing five wickets.

While chasing, the St John’s team was bundled out for just 67 runs. However, the trio -- Angad Bir, Parvesh Sharma and Shivam Bhambri -- proved to be wreckers-in-chief for the St John’s team. Angad claimed three wickets for 21 runs while Parvesh and Shivam took two wickets each for 2 and 5 runs, respectively.

North Zone TT tourney from tomorrow

Accountant General (Audit), Haryana, Chandigarh, is organising the North Zone IA and AD and All-India IA and AD Table Tennis Tournaments from July 24 to 28 at Sector 23 Table Tennis Hall here.

Giving this information here today, Rajdeep Singh, senior DAG (IA &AS) and president of the AG Haryana Sports and Recreation Club said that the North Zone competitions would be conducted from July 24 to 26 and the All-India IA and AD meet would be organised from July 28 to 30.

AG Punjab, Delhi Audit, AG Uttar Pradesh, AG Uttarakhand, AG Jammu and Kashmir, AG Himachal Pradesh and hosts AG Haryana have staked their claims for the top honours in the North Zone IA and AD Table Tennis Tournament.

A large number of national-level players will be seen in action. Among them are Patanjli Kumar, Harish Kumar, Vikas Sharma of Chandigarh, Joginder Bisht, Shyam Lal of Delhi, Jaswant Gangta of Himachal Pradesh, Amit Srivastava of Uttar Pradesh in the men’s section. In the women’s category prominent players are Gurinder Kaur, Shikha Sharma, both from Chandigarh, and Leena of Uttar Pradesh.

Raju Memorial Tournament
Satluj beat St Stephen’s

A fine knock of 70 runs by Naveen Dhiman and Shubam Mahajan fashioned victory for hosts Satluj Public School team in the final match of 1st Raju memorial tournament being played at the school ground in Sector 4, here today.

Satluj team beat St Stephen’s School team by 69 runs. Batting first, the hosts made a total of 189 runs after losing 6 wickets in stipulated 30 overs. Naveen Dhiman top scored with 70 runs and Shubham Mahajan also chipped in with 64 runs. On the other hand, Talwinder Singh took 3 wickets for St Stephen’s team.

While chasing the target, St Stephen’s were bowled out for just 120 runs. Jaspreet and Abhilas made 26 and 16 runs, respectively. Satluj’s Harpreet Singh fetched four wickets at the cost of 21 runs.

Akshit of Government High School-7 emerged winner with 12.2 points in the vaulting table event during the Under 14 Inter School Gymnastic events. The events held at Sports Complex, Sector 7, here, today.

Sandeep of SGHM School-38 stood second with 12 points while Martin of St. John’s School-26 with 10 points remained at third place.

Lokesh opened the account during the 5th minute while Sanambeer found home two times (30th and 40th minutes). In the second match, GMSSS- 22 team registered a convincing win over GMSSS- 15 team 5-0. Shailender (5th, 26th), Gurleen (9th, 20th) and Ripudaman (18th minute) fashioned this emphatic win. In the third match, St Anne’s- 32 team defeated Shivalik Public School- 41 team by three goals without conceding a single goal. Abhijeet Kataria (15th minute), Pankaj (20th) and Edwin John (40th) were the contributors for the winners.

Yoga: GMHS, Vikas Nagar team got first place in the finals of Under 14 Yoga event with 490 points. The second place was bagged by GMSSS-21 with 426 points and the third place went to St Joseph’s School- 44, which scored 290 points.

Volleyball: The team of GMSSS-19 beat GMS- 26 by 25-3, 25-1 points in the interschool volleyball match held at GMSSS- 18. In second encounter, New Public School, Sector 18, team defeated DAV Model School- 15 team by 25-11, 25-14 points. In the third encounter, GMSSS-26 got walk over. In the fourth tie, GMHS- 26 beat GHS- Kajehri by 25-23, 25-13.

In the fifth match, Manav Mangal School- 21 beat GMSSS- 44 by 28-5, 25-10.

Hockey: Shivalik Public School registered an emphatic win over St Stephen’s School- 45 team 3-1 in the opening match played at GMHS- 42 grounds.

Basketball: Bhavan Vidyalaya- 27 beat AKSIPS- 41 team 18-4 during the pre quarterfinal basketball U-14 meet held at GMSSS-33. In second match GNPS- 36 defeated DAV- 8 team 18-2. In the third match, St Mary’s- 46 team beat Chandigarh Baptist- 45 team 26-25.

Table Tennis: DPS-40 team beat Bhavan Vidyalaya- 27 team (3-2) in U-14 pre-quarterfinal encounter. The match was held at DAV-8 campus. In second match, Stepping Stones- 38 beat GMSSS-47 team 3-0 while MRA SSS-27 defeated Manav Mangal -21 team 3-1.

Throwball: In the pre-quarterfinal tie (U-14), GMSSS- 56 defeated Manav Mangal- 21 team 2-0. The events are being held at GMSSS- 40. In second match, GHS- 32 beat St Mary- 46 2-0 and the third match was won by GMSSS-40, which defeated DAV- 15 team 2-0.

Kho-Kho: GMHS- 43 beat DAV-15 team by 10 points in the pre-quarterfinal tie of Kho Kho match held at SGGS Khalsa School-35 grounds, here today. In the second match, GSSS- 45 defeated GHS- 46 by 3 points and Chandigarh Baptist- 45 defeated GMHS- 29 by 16 points.

Industrialist duped of Rs 90 lakh

The police booked three persons, including a mother-son duo, and some bank officials for allegedly duping an industrialist of Rs 90 lakh. According to the police, Bhupinder Singh of Industrial Area, here, alleged that his accountant Suresh Kanta, her son Amit Kumar and Ranbir Singh Rana of Phase VII, Mohali, in connivance with some bank officials, had duped him of Rs 90 lakh.

Bhupinder Singh told the police that Suresh Kanta, who is now living in Zirakpur, used to work for him in his factory and also lived within the factory premises with her family.

Suresh Kanta was trusted by Bhupinder Singh so much that she was aware of all his bank accounts as she used to get his cheque books updated.

He told the police that last year, before leaving for the USA, he signed a cheque worth Rs 90 lakh. Suresh Kanta knew about it.

Bhupinder alleged that she got a bank account opened in the name of Ranbir Singh Rana, who used a fake voter identity card for the purpose. The three then managed to transfer the money from Bhupinder Singh’s account to their account. They withdrew the money last month.

The police has booked the three and some bank officials under Sections 419, 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 120 B of the IPC.

Model robbed

Mohali, July 22
Gaurav, a Chandigarh-based model, was allegedly robbed by three persons outside the studio of a Punjabi channel in Industrial Area, Phase III, last night. According to the police, the incident took place past midnight when Gaurav was shooting for a film inside the studio.

He told the police that he got a call from one Aman who asked him to come out of the studio to meet him. When he reached at the gate, two other persons with Aman caught him and snatched his purse that contained Rs 5,000. His mobile phone was snatched by Aman alleged Gaurav. The three then sped away in their white Tavera car. The police has registered a case.

Youth held for drunken driving

Chandigarh, July 22
The local police today arrested Vickram, a resident of Panchkula, on the charges of rash and drunken driving, including damaging government property, from Sector 11 here this evening.

According to the police, the accused was caught while driving a Balero (PB-15-A-4545) in a drunken state. Vickram at first rammed into an electric pole in the geological department on the PU campus, after which he banged his vehicle into another in the physics department.

The accused then left Panjab University from gate number 1 and entered the PGI, where he again continued to endanger the live of people. However, Vickram managed to go past the PGI and then entered Sector 11.

He again collided with another electric pole in Sector 11, following which his vehicle got punctured. The vehicle finally ramped into the gate of the house of one Privithi Singh, a resident of Sector 11, who informed the police.

The police has arrested Vickram, whose medical examination confirmed that he was drunk.Vickram was said to be not in a state to give his statement to the police. He even failed to tell in which college he was studying.

At one point, he said he was a student of DAV College, Sector 10, but later said that he belonged to Panjab University.
