Tribune News Service

Patiala, May 28
Rajiv Gandhi University of Law (RGNUL) is all set to get a new campus on a sprawling 50-acre chunk of land on Patiala-Bhadson road.

The project of the new building, estimated to cost Rs 60 crore, is likely to take off with the foundation stone laying ceremony scheduled for next month.

Vice-chancellor of RGNUL Dr Gurjit Singh said the new campus would have all hi-tech facilities and state-of-the-art amenities. On September 8 last year, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had donated 50 acres of land at Sidhuwal village to the university.

The VC said RGNUL was established by an act of the Punjab Government in 2006. It is presently housed in the historical Mohindra Kothi on the Mall. The act incorporated a university of law of national stature in the state of Punjab, thereby fulfilling the need for a center of excellence in legal education.

Dr Singh further said the university had opened new avenues for young law aspirants. The university offers a five-year degree course in BA LLB (hon). It would admit the third batch of students in July next on the basis of an entrance test.

The admission to the five-year integrated course is based on the performance of the candidates in the common law admission test (CLAT) conducted by National Law School of Indian University (NLSIU), Bangalore.

In the next few years, the university plans to start a distance education programme under which it would offer courses in corporate laws, cyber laws and financial laws.

The total number of seats in the university is 80 out of which one is reserved for residents of Sidhuwal village, which had donated the land for the new campus. The university also offers LLM programme with specialisation in business law, criminal law and human rights law, he added.

Coal loading irks residents
Gurdeep Singh Mann
Tribune News Service

Rajpura, May 28
Heated arguments were witnessed between a section of residents and railway protection force (RPF) officials over the issue of loading and unloading of coal from trains near residential areas.

A large number of residents from Ganesh Nagar and Islampur village gathered near the railway line where coal was being unloaded from a train.

"We are forced to bear with the pollution from coal residue after it is unloaded from various trains near our house. We have pleaded before the railway authorities umpteen times to shift the venue of loading and unloading the coal but to no avail," said area resident Santokh Singh.

He lamented that the area residents even met the SDM in connection with the problem but got nothing except assurances.

Other residents pointed out that children and elderly were the worst hit as they were unable to breath properly whenever the railway authorities loaded the coal. "Situation worsens when the wind carries dust particles emanating from the coal and fills the entire locality," he said.

“Heated arguments take place between the railway authorities and residents during such situations and the RPF officials have to intervene to save the situation,” said the residents.

"The harassed residents have also tried to disrupt rail traffic twice during the past," said Shyam. He pointed out that earlier, the railway authorities were loading and unloading the coal at a far off place but now some businessmen had found this place. It saved them a few pennies, he said.

When contacted, the railway officials refused to comment on the issue.

Free for all at PCA stadium
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 28
It was a free for all at the entry gates of the PCA stadium in Mohali as securitymen lowered their guard as if to celebrate the last league matches of the current IPL season here today.

Hundreds of spectators gained free entry in the absence of any stringent checks at the gates, barring VIP and VVIP stands, resulting in a generous turnout.

The Punjab Police, which was present in same strength as in previous matches, seemed least bothered about ticketless spectators trying to enter the stadium. Even bouncers deputed at the gates could not stop youngsters from making the most of the opportunity.

The fireworks, by Punjab Kings players, including Shaun Marsh, James Hopes and Yuvraj Singh, provided enough entertainment to the spectators, which were over 20,000 in number.

If the inside atmosphere was electrified by top-class batting, the outside ambience was equally stirring with protests by various religious groups against Ness Wadia and the PCA authorities. Members of groups, including Kalgidhar Sewak Jatha and Bajrang Dal, opposed the statement issued by the PCA president over providing police cover during religious conglomerations free of cost. “How can Bindra equate religious proceedings with cricket?” they said.
