A meeting of the Punjab State Nationalist Congress Party, comprising of Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, Ropar and Nawan Shahr district, was held here today at Parwana House in Baradari Gardens. It was presided over by state general secretary of the party Om Parkash Sharma.

Check on drug abuse on campus
Punjabi varsity discovers novel way
Attar Singh
Tribune News Service

Patiala, May 25
The Punjabi University authorities have devised a novel way to cope with the increasing instances of students using intoxicants and also to keep an eye on other social evils.

The university has ordered some of its security staff to dress up in plain clothes, instead of wearing khakhi uniform, in order to keep off prying eyes. The duty of this staff is to conduct routine forays into some ‘hot spots’ frequented by wayward youngsters and other outsiders who come to the campus for a quick ‘trip’.

This staff has already come up with some positive results. A university source disclosed that just a few weeks ago the security staff nabbed an outsider who was trying to hoodwink his way past security after committing a theft near one of the boys hostels. Keeping a watchful eye on his activities, the security staff not only nabbed the offender, but also recovered the stolen goods before handing him over to the local police.

In another instance, the security staff raided a spot where some students were having intoxicants and managed to nab one of them.

In yet another instance, the security caught a student who was found to be under the influence of intoxicants near a hostel.

Likewise, incidents of eve teasing in the vicinity of girls hostel have also come down drastically.

The university authorities have decided to place these security men in some sensitive points in the campus, which include various canteens, hostels and near the vice-chancellors office.

Earlier, the university authorities had decided to install closed circuit TV in the campus, but later this proposal was dropped due to protests by some students unions.

Kalauli Jattan (Banur), May 25
This village presents a rare picture. With just four scheduled caste voters, the general category candidates are all set to boycott the election to be held tomorrow, which has three seats for SC candidates.

In their written complaint to the election commission and deputy commissioner of Patiala, villagers demanded that the elections in the village should be cancelled and be reviewed.

While the village has three seats reserved for SC candidates this year, only two are left for the general category candidates. In contrast to this, last year there was only one seat reserved for SC candidates.

Two general category candidates, Nasib Singh and Shanti Bai, have announced boycott of the election, terming reservation as arbitrary. Nasib alleged that a section of villagers in connivance with the SC candidates have manipulated greater number of reserved seats with the help of politicians and bureaucrats this time. There are 563 voters in the village and its former sarpanch was a lady - Sarabjit Kaur- from SAD (B).

“There are only four SC voters identified in the village and that too from only one family. Both husband and wife, Pal Singh and Bholi Bai, are contesting elections. The third seat for reserved candidate has gone vacant,” said Nasib. He pointed out that since these two candidates do not have opposition candidates, they would be elected unopposed.

Nasib and Shanti alleged that they have notified BDO Roop Singh about the issue who told them that there are 125 SC voters. “But even if there are 125 SC voters, as per norms, the village cannot have three reserved seats for SCs,” they argued.

While Pal Singh and his wife admitted that there were no other SC voters in the village except their family, their supporters claimed that there are 125 such voters.

The BDO said he had marked an inquiry into the allegations.

Simrat Kaur wins putting title
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, May 25
It was a contest with a difference. Young moms of the under-10 kids attending a coaching camp at the Chandigarh Golf Range participated in a three-hole putting competition in which Simrat Kaur emerged champion with a score of eight.

Trailing just one stroke behind were four who tied for the second slot with similar scores.

Although most of the young mothers had not handled golf clubs in the past, they showed keen interest in the newly introduced competition, which was well handled by the only grade A professional teacher of the region Jessie Grewal.

Tied for the second slot with identical scores of nine were Aradhana, Bhupinder Kaur, Jaswinder and Harpreet.

The first tiebreaker saw Aradhana and Jaswinder tying again for the second slot. In the second tiebreaker, Jaswinder emerged the clear winner to occupy the runners-up spot.

Triumphant Simrat said she had learnt the basics of the game about 12 years ago. Now she is the chaperon for her 10-year-old daughter Naemat and eight-year-old Suchet to the golf range for the coaching camp.

"For the past one month, I had been watching my children going through the basics of the game under Jessie Grewal. But today I felt delighted when they held a competition for the moms occupying the spectators’ chairs. It was good. Such competitions should be held on a regular basis," said Simrat.

All the moms were happy that the golf range had started a competition to keep them occupied. They felt that such competitions should be held at least once a month.

Jaswinder, who tied for the second spot along with three others, finished overall runners-up after two tiebreakers. She found the competition very interesting. She had been coming regularly to the golf range with her 10-year-old son Fateh Pratap Phoolka.

For the third-placed Aradhana, the competition was "all nerves" as she was coming to the range more for coaching of her eight-year-old son Aaryaman. "But all said and done, I liked it," she added.

Harpreet and Bhupinder Kaur, who also tied second in the first round, were all praises for the competition.

A prize distribution ceremony was held for the moms in which J.S. Cheema, secretary-general of the Chandigarh Golf Association, gave away the prizes.

Classical music maestros captivate audience
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, May 25
The two day classical music soiree Hamare Ustad" organised by the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak academy featuring the city-based nationally acclaimed maestros concluded at the Randhawa auditorium, here today.

The celebrated sitar maestro Dr Harbinder Sharma lighted up the opening session with delineation of raga 'Des' deploying two instruments, the sur bahar 'Aalap' and sitar for three compositions. A fore disciple of Ustad Vilayat Khan, he bared the raga melody in vilamabt, drut and ati drut tempo besides a melodious dhun. He displayed the magical power of notes with a finer technical virtuosity virtually making the Sitar to sing.

Acclaimed academician performer Pandit Bhim Sen Sharma provided the grand finale with soulful recital of raga 'konsi kanra' with dominant strains of raga Darbari and Malkons. The versatile maestro dedicated his performance to the memory of legendary maestros, Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Shanti Sharma and M.L. Koser.

Pandit ji held sway with his high notes delineating the pathos of parting through a composition 'Ghumani yaad ve' weaved in raga Khokhar. Sudershan Sharma (harmonium), Rajesh Malviya (tabla) provided commendable accompaniment.

Earlier, the region's most accomplished flautist Ravinder Singh of kirana gharana opened up the concert with soulful recital of compositions in raga 'Jog' yesterday. He displayed his potential of professional excellence with adroit mastery over the instrument all the slow, medium and fast tempo gats which were laced with refreshingly cultivated variations.

The virtuoso later brought alive the intense romantic fervor in two compositions weaved in raga Mishar Khamaj especially the 'Thumri ang' which he embellished under the shadowing effect of raga Maand.

The tabla accompaniment by Pandit Kale Ram however deserves a special mention.

In the second session the celebrated vocalist and foremost exponent of the Agra ghrana, professor Yashpaul took the centre stage only to mesmerise the audience with a pristine pure traditional gayaki style of his gharana. In command over an enviable virile voice, the maestro cast a spell while delineating the abstract form of raga 'Jaijaiwanti' through an alaap in nom-tom format, a forte of the Agra school.

The musical expertise spanning six decades was eloquently perceptible in his immaculate rendition of three compositions 'Sai paar lagai' in vilambat, neend na aave in Madhya and sagri umar in drut lya. After 'Chatur sughad balma and kaan kunwar in medium and fast tempo his gayaki melted into a romantic flavour with 'Kaliyan sang rang raliyan' set to raga Bahar.

Displaying his versatility he submerged the audience in devotion with the concluding 'Haa ri Yashoda' in raga Sohni. An array of accomplished musicians, including Dr Paramjit Singh on tabla, Vinay Mishra on harmonium Ustad Moinuddin on Sarangi besides Lovesh Mittal and Gagandeep.
