Accountant shot dead
Panipat, May 10 The incident took place at the railway crossing of Singhpura village near the refinery complex. Accountant Sarvesh Pandey, along with three other employees of the refinery and a driver, was returning to the refinery complex after withdrawing money from the city branch of a private bank. As they reached the railway crossing in Singhpura village, the driver of the ambassador car (MH-06-C-0645), in which they were travelling, stopped the vehicle to let a truck coming from the opposite side pass. As the vehicle stopped, three motorcycle-borne persons also stopped their bike, blocking the way ahead of the car and asked the refinery employees to hand over the cash, threatening to shoot at once. As Pandey raised an objection, the persons shot at him and snatched a suitcase and a bag in which the cash was kept and fled from the scene. The employees had kept Rs 25 lakh in the suitcase and Rs 11.86 lakh in the bag. The other employees of the refinery - clerks Arvind Kumar Sinha and Prem Kumar, Ajit and driver Suresh - immediately informed their superiors and consequently the police about the incident. Meanwhile, they took Pandey to the Panipat civil hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Pandey and the other employees of the refinery had left the bank at around 12.15 pm and the shooting incident took place at around 12.40 pm. It is believed that that the assailants followed them up to Singhpura village from the bank and executed the crime as soon as they got a chance. A team of senior officials, including SP M.S. Sheoran, reached the spot to take stock of the situation and started investigations. The police stated that the manner in which the crime had been executed suggested that the criminals were aware that the employees were carrying cash with them. Officials stated that the police was working on various theories to crack the case. They said that possibility of an insider's role in the crime could not be ruled out, but it would be inappropriate to comment on this at present. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was shifted to the mortuary of the civil hospital for a post-mortem examination. SP Sheoran said a case under sections 302 and 392 of the IPC and some sections of the Arms Act had been registered against unidentified persons. |
Hearing adjourned till May 24
Suman Bhatnagar
Ambala, May 10 Special Judge of CBI court R.K. Saini adjourned the next hearing for May 24. The CBI had filed chargesheets in Ranjeet and Chattarpati murder cases and sexual exploitation of sadhvis around eight months back in this court against the dera chief and seven others. The dera chief is lone accused in the sexual exploitation case. In the Ranjeet Singh murder case, besides the dera chief, Kishan Lal, Jasbir Singh, Awtar Singh, Inder Sain and Sabdil Singh are made accused by the CBI while in the Chattarpati murder case, besides the dera chief, Kishan Lal, Kuldeep Singh and Nirmal Singh are listed as accused. The arguments could not begin earlier as the dera chief had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court for the quashing of the FIRs. Last month, the high court dismissed the petition. The dera chief had appeared in the CBI court in Ambala for the first time in October last year. The CBI argued in detail on the sexual exploitation of the sadhvis of the dera. CBI counsel H.P.S. Verma and Umreesh Gandhi said there were sufficient evidences and witnesses against the dera chief to prosecute him and frame charges against him in this case. Gursher Singh, the counsel of the son of Ram Chander Chattarpati, supported the plea of the CBI. The CBI counsel read out the statements of two sadhvis, Sarjeevan Kaur and Sapna, in the court, in which they stated how the dera chief sexually exploited them. The statement of Khatta Singh, a former driver of the dera chief, was also read out in the court. In his statement, he had raised several allegations against the dera chief. A unanimous letter that disclosed the alleged sexual exploitation was also discussed during the argument. Defense counsel Surya Prakash said he would file his reply in this case on May 24 in the court. He said the dera chief had been falsely implicated in the cases. A tight security arrangement was made in the Police Line complex where the CBI court was temporarily shifted for today for security reasons. The road leading to the SP office was closed for public use. The dera chief reached the court around 11 am along with a convoy of 50 vehicles, including three police gypsies. Later, the dera chief addressed his followers at Gandhi grounds in Ambala Cantonment. He asked them to have faith in God and advised them to work for the human kind. |
Panel for screening of 57 blood donors
Tribune News Service
Yamunanagar, May 10 The committee has recommended screening of 57 blood donors, whose blood was given to the girl, from Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, Punjab. The committee found that the girl’s father had injected her with a medicine 35-40 times. It also felt that the infection could have entered the girl’s body through contaminated needles. “When a patient is subjected to multiple transfusions, the possibility of infection through contaminated needles increases,” said a committee member, adding that if the results of the screening of 57 blood donors come out to be negative, then it could be safely said HIV spread through a contaminated needle. The girl, who was to undergo a bone marrow transplantation, was subjected to multiple tests at a Delhi hospital. However, the father of girl claimed that the needles used for injecting medicines at home were imported and of best quality. Earlier, the father of the girl had said nine transfusions took place at the Civil Hospital but later it was found that four more transfusions had taken place. “Actually she was given blood four times in between while she was getting it in Patiala,” said the committee member. These four blood donors too were screened and like the remaining nine they too were found non-reactive for HIV. Meanwhile, it has been decided by the health department to educate thalassaemia patients about the window period of HIV. As per the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO), window period of HIV is 45 days to three months. |
