The state election commission has directed the returning officers in the state to allow voters to cast their votes by taking into consideration other identification documents in case they do not have electro photo identity cards (EPIC) with them.

State Congress president Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has constituted a committee of eminent lawyers to help victims of government repression during the Zila Parishad and Panchayati Raj elections. The committee comprises former advocate-generals Harbhagwan Singh, Gopal Krishan Chatrath and Joginder Singh Wasu, former deputy speaker Naseeb Singh Gill, S.K. Pipat and former MLA Basant Singh. 

Govt offices to remain closed on Monday

The Punjab government has declared a holiday on May 12 (Monday) in its offices, boards, corporations and education institutions on account of general election of the Panchayat Samitis and Zila Parishads.

Cong candidate Goldi seeks blanket bail

Nearly a fortnight before the byelection to the Amritsar south constituency, Congress candidate Navdeep Singh, alias Goldi, today sought blanket bail after expressing apprehensions regarding the use of “unfair and illegal” means by the Shiromani Akali Dal to emerge victorious in the elections.

HC nod to 6 Cong candidates
Gurdaspur, May 9
Justifying the highhandedness of the ruling Akali leadership, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked six Congress candidates from Kahnuwan to go ahead with the Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections from their respective areas. Former Punjab PWD minister Pratap Singh Bajwa said the court had directed the Election Commission to consider the candidatures of six (four Block Samiti and two Zila Parishad) Congress candidates from Kahnuwan.
