5 held for shooting industrialist

The police has busted a gang of five for allegedly shooting an industrialist on April 26. Other than sharp-edged weapons, the police has recovered a 12 bore rifle, a 32 bore gun and 21 cartridges.

The court of the additional sessions judge, Sanjeev Berry, has sentenced Neela Singh of Jarda village, Raikot, to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years on the charges of possessing narcotics. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh.

Fake Bombs: Suspect identified

The police has zeroed in on a local resident who had planted “fake bombs” at two nursing homes and demanded a ransom. He is yet to be arrested.

Rice scientist visits PAU

Dr Sant Singh Virmani, former principal scientist of the International Rice Research Institute, Manila, visited Punjab Agricultural University yesterday and held discussions with vice-chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang and other senior scientists of the university. The discussions centred around the role of hybrid varieties in increasing rice production.

Dr P.M. Sohal, consultant nephrologist at Ludhiana Mediciti Hospital, has said that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global problem and the condition remains unidentified in around 90 per cent of the victims.
