Admn’s claims consumed by fire
Ambala, May 6 Talking to The Tribune, Ambala deputy commissioner Mohammad Shayin said officials of the agriculture department had already tutored the farmers on do’s and don’ts in case of a fire. “Fire tenders have also been deployed outside fire stations close to the fields, so as to enable them to respond quickly in case of a fire.” Only three fire tenders each are stationed at the fire departments in Ambala Cantonment and Ambala city while one is stationed at Naraingarh. No additional equipment or facilities are available with the department. Though the fire tenders move immediately on receiving a distress call, long distances and lack of water supply in the villages remain major handicaps. Officials of the fire department informed that situation was the same across the state. The administration had stationed one fire tender at Mullana to ensure quick response but executive officer B.B. Bharadwaj of Ambala Cantonment fire station said stationing of an engine alone could not be of much help. “We only have three fire tenders and no other facilities. By the time we reach the incident site, it is already too late. Also, we don’t have water back up and water availability is already a problem.” His counterpart in the city, Kehar Singh Kadiyan corroborated his views. Both are, however, hopeful that since a proposal for a separate directorate for the fire department is in the pipeline, things should improve soon. “At times we seek help from the neighbouring states and even the Air Force,” they stated. Farmers are the worst effected and are not happy either with the compensation or with the arrangements for fire fighting. Twelve acres of standing crop on the farm of Gurdial Singh of Kesari village was destroyed this month. Upset and in a dilemma, he does not know what to do, as the land is not his. “The compensation is given to the owner. And I only have it on rent,” he remarks. He directs his anger at the administration for not having repaired the electrical lines well in time. “The fire occurred due to a short circuit at noon. The fire department was informed immediately but they took half-an-hour to reach,” asks Gurdial Singh. Mullana Market Committee chairman J.D. Singh, also from the same village, met the same fate two years ago. “My fields, too, caught fire. We need a better fire fighting system. Fire engines take time to reach the villages from the city. There should be fire stations or tenders deployed in a cluster of villages,” he suggests. The deputy commissioner clarifies that the administration did take initiatives in this regard and suspend the electrical supply to ensure less sparking. The agriculture department, too, advocates that the crop should be first cut from under the overhanging cables. Eighteen acres of crop of Nirmal Singh of Nakat Pur village was destroyed, Dharam Singh’s 17 acres of crop was destroyed in Pinjola village. “Every time during the elections we are assured that this issue will be dealt with, but nothing is ever done.” Apart from compensation by the Haryana government, the local administration, too, has provided a compensation of Rs 5,000 per acre through the District Red Cross Society. |
