The ongoing boom in real estate has sent the land prices skyrocketing in and around the city beautiful and it has had a spillover effect in the remote areas of Mandna and Morni villages on the periphery of Panchkula as well.
One acre land, which costs less than Rs 1 lakh a decade ago, has crossed the Rs
1 crore mark today.

CHB’s online account facility catches on
Safeguard for buyers against being duped
Chandigarh, May 4
An e-governance initiative of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) to allow
allottees to access their accounts online is gaining popularity. After being
launched on a pilot basis in March this year, more than 100 allottees have sent
their feedback to the board and more than 50 have visited its reception counters
to get discrepancies or inaccuracies in their accounts rectified.

PFA to hold exhibition to raise funds

Attack on law student: accused untraced
Chandigarh, May 4
The local police has failed to trace the accused who were involved in a clash, in which Simrandeep Singh Sandhu, a law student, was injured seriously.
The incident took place inside the examination hall of the Five Year Law
Department here yesterday morning. The injured, who had sustained multiple
injuries, was admitted to the PGI.

Seminar on ‘Future of Tibet’
Chandigarh, May 4
Forum on Integrated National Security, Chandigarh, organised a seminar on ‘Future of Tibet: its people and culture’ at Panjab University campus today.
Kanwal Sibal, former foreign secretary of India, explained the actual position
of Tibet. He said the position of China in the international arena is so strong
that even US cannot influence China on any kind of concession on Tibet. The
ongoing talks are the Chinese ploy to hoodwink America and international
committee, he said.

‘84 riot victims demand relief
Chandigarh, May 4
The victims of the ‘84 riots have warned the Union Government to provide them compensation within 10 days or they would protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi. Addressing a press conference in Sector 34 here, Baljit Singh Khalsa said it had been more than 23 years since the government had been denying them compensation.
A day on, fire smoulders
Mohali, May 4
The fire which destroyed a TV manufacturing unit here yesterday, was still smouldering today and two fire engines were sent to control the same. Lakhwinder Singh, assistant divisional fire officer, Mohali, said a vigil was kept throughout last night but lamented that there was no fire hydrant in the area and water was brought from the fire station and from a private factory.
Woman dies of burns
Chandigarh, May 4
Usha, a resident of Sector 38 here, died this evening after she was admitted to the PGI following an incident in which she got burnt. The 40-year-old woman was working in the kitchen. She was burnt when her clothes caught fire from a nearby stove. She was immediately taken to the PGI but she couldn’t survive.

Lok Sabha speaker has been showing his annoyance and anger against the MPs who had been disrupting proceedings in the Lok Sabha. Many a times, the headmaster has shown his helplessness, as the honorable members do not heed to his request. He has rightly described the question hour as the ‘torture hour’ and has avoided taking strong action against erring parliamentarians.
His decision to name 32 MPs belonging to different parties who had been holding the proceedings in the house to standstill sends a strong signal in the right direction.

PU setting the rules to break them!

The Panjab University authorities set the rules first for themselves only to violate them thereafter. As a run up for senate elections, scheduled for September, the authorities had in its meeting held in March 2008 resolved that till the time the elections are held that any principal or lecturers, fighting elections in their respective constituencies, will not be sent in any committees to interview candidates or as part of inspection committees in colleges.

Bhasin, dean, faculty of science, Dr Mohanmeet Khosla, chairperson, department of mass communication, Dr Madhukar Arya, and Dr Zarreen Fatima, both from the department of Urdu-Persian, were among the teachers who sat on the fast, braving the scorching heat.
2,000 take MAT exam
