19 refrigerators burnt
Kharar, April 26 These refrigerators were being sent to Ludhiana through B.K. Transport, Zirakpur. At around 7 am, other vehicle drivers, following Makhan's truck, told him that fire was emanating from the backside of his vehicle. He got down and saw that fire had ravaged packings of refrigerators and the entire stock was on flames. He stopped the truck near Daun and poured water from nearby submersible pump. He claimed to have informed the fire brigade but the latter did not reach the spot on time. It took four hours to extinguish the flames. Nineten fridges were gutted and only two were safe. Balongi police post in-charge Dalip Singh said the fire was accidental.

Labour inspector held for graft
Ambala, April 26 According to information, Arshad, a resident of Ram Krishan Colony, has been running a small factory from his residence. Labour inspector Som Nath demanded Rs 2,000 for allowing him
to run the factory in residential area. Arshad filed a complaint with the IG (Vigilance) in this regard. A raiding party was constituted under the supervision of inspector Karta Ram. This morning when Arshad was handing over the amount to labour inspector, the raiding party nabbed him red-handed. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act

Cricket: City lad among five ‘Ratnas’
Chandigarh, April 26 The batch of 20 players had undergone a seven-day coaching camp under the tutelage of former Indian players Mohinder Amarnath and Surinder Khanna, along with Physio and fitness trainer Dr Aijaz Ashai, which ended at the MCA Ground, Kandivli on Monday. They attended an extensive workshop on Sports Nutrition conducted by Dr B. Sivakumar, ex-director of National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad. The boys were also presented with an opportunity to undergo the Primus Test at Saifee Hospital to test the major joints that come into play for bowling and batting. The Boost Cricket Cup is the premier national under-17 inter-school cricket tournament, which runs under the aegis of respective State Cricket Associations, directly affiliated to the BCCI. Man dies in hit-and-run case
Chandigarh, April 26 According to police, an unknown vehicle sped away after hitting the motorcycle (H03Q-5171) of Santy on Thursday. A case has been registered at Sector 34
police station. In another incident, the police have registered a case against Amandeep Singh on the complaint of Amardep Singh, a Mohali resident, in which he has alleged that Amandeep hit his car (PB 65-G-3326) with his Indica (CH03-9792) in Sector 16, here today. Stolen:
Jarnail Singh, a resident to Sector 45, has filed a complaint that his car (CH-03-D-6896) was stolen on April 25 from Sector 17. A case under Section 379 of IPC has been registered at Police Station-17. In another incident, Vinod Khunder, a resident of Sector 38, filed a police complaint that his car (HP-33-3824) was stolen from his residence on April 25. Police have registered a case under Sections 419,420,381 of IPC at police station, Sector 17, on the complaint of Rakesh Jain, who runs a shop in the same sector. In his complaint, Jain alleged that his accountant Ashok Kumar, who stole his cheque book, tried to withdraw Rs 31,000 from his account by forging his signatures, yesterday. The accused has been arrested.

Kidnapped child recovered
Mohali, April 24 Rajveer Singh was kidnapped from his residence in Kumbra village last night. The boy’s father Sanjay Singh told the police about his child being missing. He also informed them that he suspected his neighbour Latif had kidnapped his son. According to Phase VIII police station SHO Dalbir Singh, a case was registered and a search had been launched. The accused was reportedly picked up from the jungle area near NIPER along with the child. The police said Latif belonged to Uttar Pradesh and worked in a boutique in Kumbra village. Sanjay Singh told the police that he knew Latif had an eye on his son and could have kidnapped him either for ransom or to sodomise him. Sanjay also told the police that Latif had involved his friend Satish, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, in the kidnapping. The police said investigations were on and Satish was absconding. |

Two cops held for graft
Chandigarh, April 26 The cop had demanded the money from an accused Prem Singh in an electricity theft case of village Kajheri. A case had been registered on April 22. The accused is the brother of Kajheri village councillor Kuldeep Singh. Kuldeep laid the police trap through the CBI, said sources. CBI sources said Dewan Singh had demanded the money from Prem Singh to help him avoid arrest. The latter had agreed and it was fixed that Prem Singh would send his man to the police post here at 10 pm along with the money. Later, the CBI laid a trap and arrested the accused. |
