19 refrigerators burnt

Kharar, April 26
Nineteen refrigerators were gutted in fire near Daun village this morning. The fridges were loaded from Godrej factory, Industrial Area, Mohali. Driver Makhan Singh had crossed the sales tax barrier at Balongi at 11 pm and halted at some nearby dhaba.

These refrigerators were being sent to Ludhiana through B.K. Transport, Zirakpur. At around 7 am, other vehicle drivers, following Makhan's truck, told him that fire was emanating from the backside of his vehicle. He got down and saw that fire had ravaged packings of refrigerators and the entire stock was on flames.

He stopped the truck near Daun and poured water from nearby submersible pump. He claimed to have informed the fire brigade but the latter did not reach the spot on time. It took four hours to extinguish the flames. Nineten fridges were gutted and only two were safe.

Balongi police post in-charge Dalip Singh said the fire was accidental. The police has registered a DDR.

Bhaddal inst seeks action against students

Ropar, April 26
The management of IET, Bhaddal, has complained to the Ropar SSP demanding action against students who damaged the institute property and created disharmony on the campus. In his application to the police, institute CEO Ravinder Pal Singh stated the sequence of events and said the matter was already in the notice of Ropar SDM Kavita Singh and DSP (rural) Gautam Singhal, who were present on the campus and had witnessed the ruckus at institute.

Meanwhile, the body of Gaurav Wahi, who had gone missing on Thursday, has not been found as yet.

Labour inspector held for graft

Ambala, April 26
The Vigilance Bureau has nabbed a labour inspector of Ambala Cantonment area for taking bribe of Rs 2,000 from a small factory owner.

According to information, Arshad, a resident of Ram Krishan Colony, has been running a small factory from his residence. Labour inspector Som Nath demanded Rs 2,000 for allowing him to run the factory in residential area.

Arshad filed a complaint with the IG (Vigilance) in this regard. A raiding party was constituted under the supervision of inspector Karta Ram. This morning when Arshad was handing over the amount to labour inspector, the raiding party nabbed him red-handed.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against Som Nath.

Abhilaksh, Anuj win slow-cycling event

Abhilaksh, Anuj of Ajit Karam Singh International Public School emerged winners in the slow cycling event in junior and senior categories, respectively, during the 3rd Indian Oil Extra Premium Inter-School Bicycle Games held on Moti Ram Arya School grounds in Sector 27A, here today. The event was organised jointly by Yuvsatta, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and department of environment, Chandigarh administration. A total of 500 students from 20 schools of the city participated in the events. Three schools GMSSS-8B, DAV SSS( Lahore) and GSSS, Manimajra Town, were declared overall best in the games. Pawan Kumar Bansal, union minister of state for finance, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Cricket: City lad among five ‘Ratnas’

Shahnawaz Mirza from DAV Senior Secondary School-8, Chandigarh, is among the five ‘Ratnas’, the exceptionally talented cricketers who have been selected among the 20 players from the Boost Cricket Cup Coaching Camp. The five ‘Ratnas’ have also been awarded Rs 20,000 each.

The batch of 20 players had undergone a seven-day coaching camp under the tutelage of former Indian players Mohinder Amarnath and Surinder Khanna, along with Physio and fitness trainer Dr Aijaz Ashai, which ended at the MCA Ground, Kandivli on Monday.

They attended an extensive workshop on Sports Nutrition conducted by Dr B. Sivakumar, ex-director of National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad. The boys were also presented with an opportunity to undergo the Primus Test at Saifee Hospital to test the major joints that come into play for bowling and batting.

The Boost Cricket Cup is the premier national under-17 inter-school cricket tournament, which runs under the aegis of respective State Cricket Associations, directly affiliated to the BCCI.

The five ‘Ratnas’ are Sandeep Kaushik (All-rounder, Salwan Boys School, Delhi); Nitish Rana (Batsman, Salwan Boys School, Delhi); M. Kamalesh (Wicket-keeper Batsman, Santhome High School, Chennai); Shahnawaz Mirza (Batsman, DAV-8 Chandigarh) and Yatharth Tomar (Bowler, Salwan Boys School, Delhi).

Rohit wins two golds in roll ball meet

National skater Rohit Bajaj, Class XII student of KBDAV Sector 7, Chandigarh, bagged two gold medals in the 6th National Roll Ball Championshiop held at Pune, recently. The event was organised by the Maharashra State Roll Ball Association.

“Rohit Bajaj has also been selected for the international championship of Roll Ball to be held at Dhaka (Bangladesh) this year”, informed Principal Madhu Bahl, chairperson of Roller Hockey Technical Committee, Roller Skating Federation of India.

Ortho and cardiac check up camp

Around 1,062 persons were examined during a special ortho and cardiac camp organised by Chandigarh Chemists Association at Ramgarhia Bhawan, Sector 27, here today. Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union minister of state for finance, inaugurated the camp.

Dr Rakesh K Jaswal, DM, Cardio and additional director, intervention cardiologist, Fortis Hospital, led the cardiac unit of Fortis Hospital.

Man dies in hit-and-run case

A person lost his life in a hit-and-run case, while a woman got injured in another accident case. In the first incident, Santy, a resident of Burail village was declared brought- dead at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, after he was taken there following an accident at Sector 45.

According to police, an unknown vehicle sped away after hitting the motorcycle (H03Q-5171) of Santy on Thursday. A case has been registered at Sector 34 police station.

In another incident, the police have registered a case against Amandeep Singh on the complaint of Amardep Singh, a Mohali resident, in which he has alleged that Amandeep hit his car (PB 65-G-3326) with his Indica (CH03-9792) in Sector 16, here today.

Stolen: Jarnail Singh, a resident to Sector 45, has filed a complaint that his car (CH-03-D-6896) was stolen on April 25 from Sector 17. A case under Section 379 of IPC has been registered at Police Station-17. In another incident, Vinod Khunder, a resident of Sector 38, filed a police complaint that his car (HP-33-3824) was stolen from his residence on April 25. A case under Section 379 of IPC has been registered at Police Station-39.

Cheating: Police have registered a case under Sections 419,420,381 of IPC at police station, Sector 17, on the complaint of Rakesh Jain, who runs a shop in the same sector. In his complaint, Jain alleged that his accountant Ashok Kumar, who stole his cheque book, tried to withdraw Rs 31,000 from his account by forging his signatures, yesterday. The accused has been arrested.

Kidnapped child recovered

Mohali, April 24
The police has recovered a four-year-old child this evening who was allegedly kidnapped from his residence late last night. The kidnapper has also been arrested.

Rajveer Singh was kidnapped from his residence in Kumbra village last night. The boy’s father Sanjay Singh told the police about his child being missing. He also informed them that he suspected his neighbour Latif had kidnapped his son.

According to Phase VIII police station SHO Dalbir Singh, a case was registered and a search had been launched. The accused was reportedly picked up from the jungle area near NIPER along with the child.

The police said Latif belonged to Uttar Pradesh and worked in a boutique in Kumbra village. Sanjay Singh told the police that he knew Latif had an eye on his son and could have kidnapped him either for ransom or to sodomise him.

Sanjay also told the police that Latif had involved his friend Satish, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, in the kidnapping. The police said investigations were on and Satish was absconding.

Two cops held for graft

The CBI sleuths yesterday arrested sub-inspector Dewan Singh, in charge of the police post, Sector 61, and constable Jasbir Singh red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000.

The cop had demanded the money from an accused Prem Singh in an electricity theft case of village Kajheri. A case had been registered on April 22. The accused is the brother of Kajheri village councillor Kuldeep Singh. Kuldeep laid the police trap through the CBI, said sources.

CBI sources said Dewan Singh had demanded the money from Prem Singh to help him avoid arrest. The latter had agreed and it was fixed that Prem Singh would send his man to the police post here at 10 pm along with the money.

Later, the CBI laid a trap and arrested the accused.

16-yr-old girl kidnapped

Panchkula, April 26
A 16-year-old girl of Hairpur village near here has allegedly been kidnapped by a resident of the same village. In a complaint to the police, the girl’s father Karam Singh said his daughter had been missing from home since April 21. He said his daughter was kidnapped from the village. He said Jasbir Singh, a resident of the village, was responsible for the crime and he was also missing from the village since then. The police has registered a case and started inquest proceedings.
