Major fire engulfs Dandrala Bir forest
Tribune News Service

Dera Bassi, April 25
Around 125 acres of forests in Dandrala Bir was gutted in a major fire, here today. A large number of trees have been reduced to ashes and forest officials suspect a substantial loss of wildlife as well. The exact cause of the fire is still not known, although it seems that a stray spark transported by the wind might have led to the fire.

The fire spread within minutes and engulfed a large part of the area before fire and forest official reached the spot. Two tenders were pressed into service and it took over three hours to douse the flames.

Fire officer Dera Bassi B.S. Sandhu said the fire could have posed a danger to the lives of residents of the city had the wind direction been towards the town and not the opposite as it was today.

Meanwhile, in Amlala village near here, a harvester being used by a farmer caught fire which spread to the wheat fields. Two trolley loads of husk also caught fire. It took over an hour for a tender to bring the fire under control.

In yet another fire incident that took place in village Jaula Kalan, near Lalru, fire consumed husk spread over 20 acres of land. A fire tender took over an hour to bring the fire under control.

IPL match a big draw
Tribune News Service

Mohali, April 25
They virtually wanted this and they got today. Yes, the first win of Kings XI Punjab after two losses and packed to capacity Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. Preity Zinta and her beau Ness Wadia were as excited as the 30,000 spectators who enjoyed to the hilt the four hour thrilling match in electrifying atmosphere.

While in the general stands, cricket buffs were seen backing their local Kings with banners and slogans, in the VVIPs blocks and corporate boxes, every shot got applause with raising of mugs of beer.

No one could differentiate today’s inter-state match of the BCCI’s innovative Indian Premier League (IPL) match from the response an international match generates.

Contrary to expectations, Punjab cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who learnt his cricketing skill at these grounds, got little support from his home crowd despite his brilliant performance with the ball.

“We love Bhajji, but today he is a rival player as he representing the Mumbai team. We are here to support our Punjab team. We are happy, when he was battered by Sangakkara”, said Zutshi, Teena and Sanya.

“We are least bothered whether Aussie Brett Lee and Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara are slamming the Indian bowlers, playing for rival Mumbai team. We just want runs for Punjab team and wanted to see it through”, said Rajesh Ahuja. The early dismissal of the local boy and everyone’s favourite Yuvraj Singh left almost the whole stadium disappointed.

The ongoing controversy over the presence of cheerleaders also seemed to have not gone well with the local crowd. “I think some people are raking the issue out of proportion. They add a quotient of entertainment in the high-voltage Twenty20 format. I am unable to understand why some people are making this an issue”, said Namita Arora and Ashish Arora while imitating the dance steps of the glamorous girls.

A beaming Ness Wadia said he was thrilled to see the packed stadium and over enthusiastic crowd, backing his as well as their team. “I think, the local cricket fans have started associating themselves with the team but a total acceptance on lines of football leagues might take some more time. But I am really happy to see the turn out of spectators today,” he said talking to the TNS.

PCA fortress

There seems to be no end to the woes of Mohali residents when it comes to a match day. The traffic on the roads was diverted first for three hours this morning to set up the barricades. The complete sealing of the stadium began as early as 6 pm for a match that was to begin at 8 pm. Rush hour traffic was diverted. Early comers to the stadium also did not benefit much. Gates opened only half and hour before the beginning of the match. The crowd seemed to go of control at one point but by 8.30 pm almost the entire lot of spectators many of who had been waiting since six pm were in.

Sachin missed

For thousands of spectators who had come to watch the master blaster performance live were in for a big let down. The Sachin magic was missing from the match and many spectators made it a point to air their disappointment. Sachin Tendulkar was to Captain the visiting team but injury kept him out. “We have been ditched. I came only to see him play,” said Amit Guha, a spectator. However, Sachin was seen cheering his team while sitting in dressing room.

CITCO board’s bonanza to sports department
Pradeep Sharma
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 25
The tug-of-war between the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO) and the UT sports department over Rs 52,000 discount is set to end to the advantage of the department.

Now miffed at the dilly-dalling attitude of the sports department to pay the discounted payment of Rs 1,75,295, CITCO's board of directors (BoD) has decided to waive the amount to the department at its meeting to be held on April 29.

It may be recalled that CITCO has raised a bill of Rs 1,75,295 for the refreshments being served from Hotel Parkview during the practice matches played between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka against Punjab XI at the Sector 16 cricket stadium in October 2006.

The amount included service charges, VAT and service tax.

However, the sports department delayed the payment on the contention that the event was to organised by CITCO at its own cost.

Ultimately, CITCO's gesture of 30% discount was lapped up by the sports department.

The payment agreement, however, failed to materialise as the sports department deducted 30% discount on the total payment, including the service charges, the service tax and VAT, and released a payment of Rs 1,22,707 in 2008. On the other hand, CITCO contended that 30% discount on the total bill should not have been deducted by the sports department as the discount was allowed on the gross amount of food only.

By deducting 30% discount on the entire bill, the sports department had effectively taken a discount @47% on the food bill.

And seeing no chances of recovery from the sports department, the board would take up for consideration the approval of discount @47%.

Meanwhile, the issue of the reconstitution of the departmental promotion and selection committees would also be placed before meeting.

Abhishek Jha is Classic Open champ
Kang shares best card of the day
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, April 25
Harjinder Singh Kang of Chandigarh shared the best card of the day with the ultimate winner Abhishek Jha, a three under par 69, as he climbed up the ladder to finish tied fourth in the LG ITC Classic Open Amateur Golf Championship on the par-72 greens of the Jack Nicklaus-designed Classic Golf Resort in Gurgaon today.

This bright patch came Kang’s way too late. But it helped him climb up the ladder from the eighth spot to be tied fourth along with Vikram Rana and Rahil Bajaj at 290.

“I played serious mental golf and it paid off”, said Kang as he plans to take this game into the next leg, JP Greens Amateur Open, which begins at Noida on April 29.

Kang fired two birdies and conceded two bogeys in the front nine. But he got his putting in order firing four birdies on the return nine for the three-under par score.

After the JP Greens Amateur Open, Kang will be back in Chandigarh to brush up for the Malaysian Amateur Open to be held from May 22 to 25.

It was an unusual ending. Bangalore’s Abhishek Jha, who began three shots behind the leader, ended up two shots ahead after 72 holes and thus emerged as the champion of the event, the opening leg of the LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour 2008-09 season. The lanky lad closed in with a three-under 69 for a tournament total of six-under par 282.

A jubilant Abhishek said: “I am thrilled to begin the new season on a winning note. I think the hard work during my off season has paid off”.

Overnight leader Saurabh Bahuguna after a disastrous back nine had to be content with a second place finish after shooting a 74. Pawan Kumar was sole third with a total of 289.

Everything was going fine according to the script until the 63rd hole on day when there was no disturbance of wind or harsh sun. Overnight leader Saurabh Bahuguna had managed to clutch on to his overnight lead, albeit cut to two shots instead of three by the challenger from the South Abhishek Jha, courtesy a birdie on the ninth.

Just then, the lanky amateur from Bangalore decided to play the game in a different way. Abhishek sank the 18-footer birdie putt, putting pressure on the leader who promptly bogeyed as not only parity was restored but went ahead by a shot. Still reeling under pressure, Saurabh bogeyed the 12th to give a two-stroke advantage to his playing partner.

The issue was sealed on the par-4 13th when Abhishek stuck the ball to six feet on his second and duly completed the birdie putt. Saurabh three-putted from 20 feet to fall behind by four strokes, all this in a matter of four holes. Saurabh did try to go all out as he made consecutive birdies on the last two holes but it was not enough as Abhishek sustained his form to emerge as the winner.

“The three-stroke lead was not threatening. I just wanted to make pars with an occasional bogey and I was sure that I would be in the reckoning. The formula worked”, said the 21-year-old.

The final scores: 282 Abhishek Jha (73, 71, 69, 69); 284 Sourav Bahugana (72, 68, 70, 74); 289 Pawan Kumar (73, 69, 73, 74); 290 Vikram Rana (77, 66, 76, 71), Rahul Bajaj (74, 70, 75, 71), HS Kang (72, 72, 77, 69); 292 Amanjyot Singh (72, 74, 74, 72); 294 Kapil Kumar (71, 74, 75, 74), Arshdeep Tiwana (75, 76, 73, 70) 295 Tarun Ghogale (74, 75, 74, 72), Jasjeet Singh (75, 70, 77, 73); 296 Rudresh Sharma (72, 77, 73, 74); 297 SK Lakra (73, 78, 71, 75), Siddharth Seth (78, 73, 72, 74) Rahul Sikand (73, 77, 73, 74), Samresh Sardar (76, 76, 74, 71).

Having developed the MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition) concept the business tourist from India, Singapore is aiming to double the business travellers from India in times to come. Talking to TNS here today, Kenneth Lim, area director for North and East India, Pakistan Bangladesh and Nepal, Singapore Tourism Board (STB), said the 30 per cent of the tourists from India to Singapore last year were business travellers.

Last year, Singapore welcomed 10.3 million tourists, of which 7.49 lakh tourists were from India. “With 14 per cent of the tourists to Singapore coming from India, we are trying to offer the best packages to the business travellers. Our main focus is to reach out to companies and corporate houses directly and tie up with the travel agents catering to the corporate houses.

“We also incentivise the big business groups by entertaining them with welcome performances and offer them incentives on visits to places of tourist attraction. In case the business group is large enough, we also offer them subsidised food,” says Lim.

With the other beach destinations like Mauritius, Malaysia, Maldives and Indonesia, gaining wide popularity with the business travellers from India, Singapore says that it is trying to take a lead over these destinations by offering its white beach in Sentosa Island, with a special laser show in the sea. “We have now made arrangements for catering Indian food for large business delegations. Besides, Singapore continues to remain a popular leisure and shopping destination, which is an added advantage for the business traveller,” he adds.

The STB official said they are also promoting its international golf courses and day spas to the business traveller, for a relaxation after a hectic day at work. Back
