25,000 ltr spurious milk destroyed
Health minister supervises operation
Tribune News Service

Rajpura, April 17
The Punjab health minister today personally supervised the process of destroying 25,000 litres of spurious milk that was recovered by the local police a few days back. The city police had unearthed a spurious milk producing unit on March 20 and had recovered a huge quantity of chemicals and other ingredients that were used to produce the milk along with three tankers. The unit was allegedly being run by an Akali leader, who was considered close to a Punjab cabinet minister.

As the health department had refused to proceed against the owner of the unit, the local police team under the supervision of SHO Bikramjit Singh Brar, had directly reported the matter to Punjab minister for health Luxmi Kanta Chawla after which it had registered a case against three persons, including Amritpal Singh owner of the unit, Harish Kumar, who used to prepare the milk and Baldev Singh driver of one the tankers. The three had been placed under arrest by the police.

Later, after the health minister's intervention, the health departments collected some samples, which were examined at the state chemical lab. As the laboratory reports confirmed that the milk was spurious, legal procedure was initiated to destroy the 25,000 litres of spurious milk. In the meantime the police had added some more section of the Food Adulteration Act to the FIR that was registered in this regard. However, the health department today did not inform the local police before destroying the spurious milk, even as the unit was unearthed by the police.

The minister herself arrived here to oversee the process of destroying the milk and stayed with the district health officials till the milk was completely destroyed by throwing it into a local canal.

Later, speaking to the mediapersons, the minister said the state health department had been issued instruction to check such dubious practices. Defending the health officials the minister said department was carrying out a drive against any such practices. She said department had so far seized illicit drugs worth over Rs 5 lakh in the past few months.

The minister said the state ministry had floated tenders to provide cheap medicines at all the state-run health care institutions across Punjab. She said modalities for the same were being completed and soon cheap medicines would be made available across the state.

The health minister said the department had also launched a pilot project to provide health care in the slum areas in some parts of the state and soon this project would be extended to all districts of the state.

Senior Akali leader Prem Singh Chandumajra, who also accompanied the minister, said the state government was committed to eradicate the drug menace in the state and all possible efforts were being made in this direction.

Stars, not cricket, interest people
50 pc tickets already sold, claim organisers
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 17
Star cricketers, who were bought by Bollywood actor Preity Zinta to play for her Mohali team at an auction in Mumbai recently, have now been given the task to sell tickets for the match scheduled to be played at PCA on Saturday.

Though large numbers of fans gathered around to see their favourite players, interestingly, there were not many buyers of tickets.

Upset over the development, the top class players made it a point to give autographs to only those who came forward to buy tickets from them. For many, it was a fun to see the cricketers manning the counters to sell tickets.

The players sold the tickets at Baskin Robin joints in Sector 17 and 44, Planet M shops in Fun Republic and in Phase 3B2, Mohali.

Indian bowler Sree Santh along with Australian James Hopes visited Planet M in Fun Republic in the afternoon while Indian spinner Romesh Powar was seen selling the tickets along with Wolken Mota at Baskin Robin counter at Sector 17.

New Zealander Kyle Mills and Australian Simon Katich were entrusted with the job at Planet M, Mohali, and Baskin Robin, Sector 44.

“It seems that the organisers find it hard to sell the tickets for the forthcoming IPL matches. That’s why the players have been assigned this trivial job to attract the buffs for buying the tickets. Otherwise, this is the first time we are watching the stars hobnobbing with common people”, said Rajesh Kumar at Fun Republic.

Earlier, Pretiy Zinta and Brett Lee launched the sale of tickets by selling these personally at PCA stadium.

On the other hand, the organisers have claimed that more than 50 per cent tickets had been sold till yesterday.

Meanwhile, in an attempt to create hype, the members of both Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings teams, including Stephen Fleming, Michael Hussey, Muttiah Muralitharan, Yuvraj Singh, Simon Katich and Piyush Chawla addressed a press conference at a local hotel in evening.

“For the first time I saw so many international players addressing mediapersons together. This should happen quite often during the international matches”, said one of the journalists.

Murali looks to take on teammates
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 17
Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan is uncertain about achieving the feat of completing 1,000 international test wickets.

Murali, who turned 36 today, said as the age was catching up, he does not know whether he would be able to achieve the
feat or not.

“I have no plans as such in my mind at the moment and I don’t know whether I would be able to make it or not while playing the game”, said Muralitharan while talking at a local hotel here today.

When asked if he has been planning to hang the boots in near future, the spinner who has bagged 735 wickets in 120 tests and 464 wickets in 309 ODIs denied, maintaining that he is not thinking on the lines right now.

“But in the game, you never know”, said Muralitharan.

Murali is in the city as a member of the Indian Premier League’s Chennai Super Kings team, which will take on local favourites Kings XI Punjab on Saturday.

Looking excited to be the part of the league, Murali said the twenty20 format is going to be the future of the game.

“All are looking forward to playing with the players of other countries against some of their own country’s teammates. Mahela Jayawardene, K. Sangakkara and I have been playing together for many years. For me, bowling to them would be exciting”, said Murali, maintaining that his strategy against his country mates is to get them out on their first balls.

Murali was no short of words while praising the Indian ODI skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni as he termed him the best twenty20 player in the world.

“For the last one year, Dhoni has been doing extremely well in the arena. He has won the maiden Twenty20 World Cup for his country. Playing under his leadership would be good experience”, said the spinner.

Setting aside the idea of Mohali team having edge over Chennai team due to home advantage, Murali was of the view that in this quick format, there was little scope of such advantages. As Mohali wicket is bowler-friendly and batsmen friendly as well, having top class players on their side, both the teams have equal chances.

The IPL is an exciting format where every team has chance to get triumphant, said Murali.
