Govt to construct 4 dams on Ghaggar
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, April 13
The Haryana Government has decided to construct four dams on river Ghaggar and its tributaries in the state to ensure optimum utilisation of water and its conservation in view of growing demand for water.

This was stated by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda while laying the foundation stone of Koshalya Dam on river Koshalya at Pinjore near here today.

The other three dams would be constructed at Diwanwala, Dangrana and Chhamla. The state is facing acute water shortage in its requirements of drinking, agriculture and industrial use. Against the requirement of 43 million acre feet (MAF) there is merely 14 MAF of water available in the state.

The Koshalya dam, to be built within next 18 months at a cost of Rs 118 crore, would help in supplementing the drinking water requirements in Panchkula and Pinjore, along with moderation of floods in the area and recharging of underground water in the region, Hooda added.

Claiming that his government was working to solve the drinking water problems of the people of state the chief minister said though Koshalya Dam was proposed in 1952 but it was only now that his government has taken up its construction at a cost of Rs 270 crore. Similar was the case with Dadupur Nalvi canal, he said.

This canal would utilize surplus Yamuna waters for irrigation and recharge ground water in districts of Yamunanagar, Ambala and Kurukshetra.

Haryana Irrigation Minister, Captain Ajay Singh Yadav while counting on the works being carried out by his ministry said the government would spend Rs 10 crore for revival of sacred river Saraswati in areas of Pehowa and Kalayat. Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Irrigation, R.N.Prasher said Koshalya Dam would store 1368-hectare meter water and the dam would have a minimum life of 100 years.

Bio-medical waste kills 3 cows
Residents protest against authorities, doctors

Sushil Manav

Fatehabad, April 13
Local residents, including activists of some social and political organisations, today held a demonstration against the authorities and some local doctors responsible for dumping their bio-medical waste in the open after three cows were found dead and four more found in a critical condition after eating the medical refuse thrown in Lajpat Nagar Park.

Though the police has registered an FIR and sent viscera of the dead animals for examination, the residents are not satisfied with the police action and have demanded action against the doctors, who they alleged, have been regularly throwing away bio-medical waste in the public park.

As the news of the death of three cows in park spread in the morning today, a large number of people started gathering there. The irate residents led by Om Parkash Ralhan, district president of the BJP, Bharat Bhushan Midha of the VHP, Ramesh Kamra of the Pitanjali Yog Samiti and Sanjay Batra of the Gau Raksha Samiti expressed resentment against the authorities when they noticed heaps of bio-medical waste in the park.

Sensing anger of the residents, the district authorities sent senior medical officer Hira Lal Gupta, district development and panchayat officer O.P. Sharma, veterinary surgeon S.K. Grover and pollution department engineer Sanjiv Kumar, who took samples of bio-medical waste.

The police has registered an FIR for poisoning an animal but no one has been named. Civil surgeon J.K. Bishnoi said under no circumstances, bio-medical waste could be thrown in a public park. He said such waste had to be destroyed in an insinuator and since it was not available here, most of the doctors had annual contracts with a Hisar firm for lifting waste.
