UT demands more power from Centre
Increase of around 100 MW sought
Chandigarh, April 12
To bridge the gap between the demand and availability of power, the Chandigarh administration has written to the union power ministry seeking more power allocation from the Centre. An increase of around 100 megawatt from the Central allocation has been sought.

15 challaned for employing underage children
Chandigarh, April 12
Children being counselled by officials of the education department at a wine factory in Under its child labour and protection programme, the Chandigarh education department officials today launched a special drive to check child labour. Around 40 under-aged children were spotted and counselled at different locations in the city. Fifteen challans were issued to proprietors of various factories, dhabas and shops where underage children were employed.

“Today I had a unique experience of having a glimpse of the paper currency of old collectors,” said one of the visitor at the exhibition organised by the Reserve Bank of India, here today. Parminder Hans, wife of noted historian and Punjabi writer Surjit Singh Hans, and mother of Nanki Hans, Chief Sub Editor, The Tribune, died after a brief illness at Wolver Hampton Hospital in England this morning. She was 68.

Man crushed under tractor
Chandigarh, April 12
Forty-four-year-old Balbir Singh was crushed to death under a tractor at Dhanas village here this evening. According to the information, the cyclist, a resident of Mohali, was hit by the tractor which sped away from the spot. The police said they received a call about the incident at around 4.45 pm.

After the day-long cultural activities by NZCC artists, the second day of Baisakhi Festival was marked with a special classical music concert at the Rock Garden here today. The melodious soulful strains of sitar wafted across the otherwise tranquil and panoramic ambience as the celebrated Sitar maestro, Harvinder Sharma, presented raga Yaman Kalyan.
